A true engineer can work even with wood. But a mechanic needs manuals, drawing board and the right materials.
Can you do a vid on how to make “organic” forms in perspective like this? Boxes and cylinders are second nature but I can’t for the life of me rotate something like a pear or make a torso look good
I think that boils down to, trying to break it down into those simple shapes. Try to break that down into a box and cylinder. A trick for the human body I've seen often is learning to draw the simple bean. It can simulate the shapes you need very well. Ultimately it does require you to slow down and work out how it can be broken down into simple geometric shapes.
It is as CyberV says, learn to draw a bean, simple organic shape. And learn to rotate that. Intact, can some blutac or play dough, and make an organic shape, and draw it in various angles. But don't learn that specific shape, learn to understand the volume of the shape in your imagination. I don't have a minds eye, I have aphantasia. But I can 'feel' volumes of liquid in my sixth sense so to speak, and put that on paper. After that, you realise the general shape of people is like hunks of organic shapes. The real skill is getting that on paper.
When rotating those forms, I think it's good to mention overlap and foreshortening. They are basically 2/4 concepts of what makes something 3D and they are a bit subjective too. but having those concepts in the back of your mind really helps. Especially if you practice these on simple sylinders first and then as the other people, break them down into simple volumes.. a Pear can essentially be one big sphere and one smaller sphere on top of each other.. so if you rotate that you can try to think of how those two spheres overlap. Does that help?
I remember watching Kim Jung Gi's stream and he was explaining the same thing.
He said 'if you don't understand this concept, I suggest you switch your interest to something else besides drawing'

So you can draw anything from imagination only? If you wanted to draw a '63 Buick Skylark with your view point being the bottom of a ditch looking up at the rear passenger side could you do it from ALL imagination?
No imagination is not all. Observation is equally or even more important.

First you go theory
And then just practice and practice
For example to draw hands - you learn about muscles (simplified) amd then draw like 100 arms
It's ALL shapes. When you see this, it's a beautiful feeling.

I know drawing from imagination is not necessarily as good as reference but the idea is still always so exciting. Especially with guys like Jung gi have mastered it so much.
Just to put things into perspective, i remember a video where Jung Gi basically says that he didn't draw anything from imagination. He did say he had a great memory, so he could easily build up a mental reference database, and draw most anything. Unfortunately i don't remember which video it was
People don't draw things from imagination, they draw from reference. Some people just have a better "reference library" than others. You use what you've seen, and even things from descriptions, get drawn from your internal reference in your brain.
Without that internal reference, things just don't match up. Muscles don't look like they'd be able to move something correctly, a face looks off because it doesn't have the correct general proportions (which can be a goal of course), a house looks off because it's just too narrow in things like a door's proportions etc.
Even Giger's art is not from imagination, but of certain ways things look in the animal worldm and primal human fears and nightmares.
I know it sounds good to just be able to think something up and draw it, you'll use your own references regardless and building up that reference is key (and why i suck at drawing. Well, that and not practicing enough xD).
Drawing from Imagination here means not relying on a visual reference before you to inform your work process, instead relying primarily on your own understanding and mental imaging of the object in question.
Everyone (except Aphantasic people) can create a mental image of objects they're familiar with.
But what happens when you need to visualise that object in position/angle you're not familiar with or have never seen before? For example, a human body from the view of a worm in the ground? Even though you already understand the basic form, shape and proportions of the parts of that human body?
Drawing from Imagination implies you can imagine seeing that body from the perspective of a worm, based on what you understand of what that imagery COULD be.
You'd imagine a worm is to a human, what you would be to a sky scraper. If you already have the basics of the shapes and proportions down, you can imagine putting that body and all it's shapes into this perspective, so long as you understand how this perspective works.
This is what I believe the first few minutes of this video was trying to explain.
It is impossible for any human mind to not draw from any reference at all, but our memories are building blocks from we can extrapolate larger or similar ideas. I see it as something akin to Projection drawing in Technical drawing and Engineering.

PERFECT, literally perfect. Because I have the problem, I can imagine things I'd love to draw in very clear detail in my head. But I am not very good at all to transfer what I can imagine onto the (virtual) paper

I been drawing from imagination since I was a child. IT was never hard or difficult now drawing it accurately is another question but that is where reference will help. Drawing people was always easier that drawing full scenes of anything from imagination.
But what you spend the most time will make it easier to draw.
video idea: could you cover how you get your drawings to look so 3d? i aspire to have the amount of volume and physicness like you have in your art, i’ve got my basics and anatomy covered, but it still looks flat compared to stuff i see skilled artists like you draw

UA-camrs just say that because LEARNING requires reference and they don't want to start a debate that could damage their reputation.
It just means use references when you need to, likely when you're drawing from imagination you'll need a lot as you begin and a lot less when you're 10 years in. But in this very video he tells us to use them to xp so yeah

Hi Mark, I noticed that the lineart brush in your videos is a little different in practice. After doing some experiments, I realized that the problem is Opacity Jitter and the question is, what value do you usually set? And perhaps some settings are also different? Just for interest.
P.S. The video is superb as usual, we are expecting new videos about copying styles.
Do you know the setting of the brush yet?
@@UA-camhandlename hi, i turn off opacity pressure and set up opacity jitter to 80-100% and it's looks similar to brush in videos.

I realized I have improved, but how? I didn't actually plan when to practice art but instead when I was bored in class I would feel my notebooks with bunch of art like characters and different poses
and then theres artists like me who have aphantasia and have a blank minds eye and cant picture shit in my head 🙃 nor can i have a visual library in my brain since that doesnt work and all i see is black🤷♀.... i rely on really understanding structure, anatomy and using TONS of reference.... id LOVE to see a video for people like me who cant draw from imagination and different tips for us aphantasic artists especially since most of these videos are geared towards artist that dont have a broken ass imagination 🙃 srsly when i found out that the idea of mental imagery wasnt just metaphor and most ppl have that ability i felt so ripped off and broken especially being a artist... its like i started on hard mode with no tutorials 🙃
I'm sorry to hear that you struggle with that :( Honestly, since Marc doesn't have aphantasia, I don't think he would be able to make a tutorial for artists with it - he just can't know what it's like to think so differently, at least no more than a surface level. Maybe you can hunt down artists with aphantasia and ask them?

Sure. You draw from imagination and you've got a tutorial. But when I do it psychiatrists get involved and words like "disturbing" and "dear lord, what's wrong with you" get thrown around.

It's never too late
I didn't start to draw/paint until I was in my mid 30s. It took a few years but I'm legitimately comparable to professional designers (I actually work as a visual information specialist now).
This rumor that you have to learn when you're young exists is because adults are in a hurry to feel like they accomplished (finished) something. Ditch any notion of finishing/posting artwork for a few years. You can noodle an image until it looks passable but why waste your time/frustrate yourself.
Starting out requires filling sketchbooks with hundreds and hundreds of rough sketches. If you let your adult ego get in the way or slow you down, you'll fail then you'll quit. Right now, your goal is figure out how to enjoy drawing so much you feel uncomfortable leaving the house without your sketchbook. Make it a fidget habit by not drawing complex things. Draw primitives.
In my first two years I took Marc Brunet's art program which helped a ton. I would study Scott Robertson's How to Draw then Michael Hampton's Design and Invention before Marc's course if you want to go that route. My only problem with Marc's course is it glosses over perspective construction when you need a very strong foundation BEFORE even CONSIDERING anatomy but Marc knows his audience wants to learn character art so he wedged it in early and I disagree. You can learn faster than a child or teenager (I did and I'm not above average at anything) if you can put aside your ego and learn the way accomplished artists advise. This means months of learning primitive construction and rendering, not 'you tried it a few times but you want to do tutorials on eyes and hands'... Eyes and hands are last so don't even worry about it for a few years.
Remember when people say 'have fun', it's not just a nice thing to say. In order to stick with this you absolutely cannot start looking at drawing as work. Start when you're excited and stop when you're feeling you made progress. This means drawing less in the beginning in order to develop a habit. Don't keep going until you're frustrated or you'll develop a negative association and quit. Children love drawing the entire time because there's no expectations and people praise them regardless what they draw. That's why people say that even though it's just as ridiculous as saying a child learns calculus faster than a college student

I have a question for all artists. I’m at the point in art where I can copy pictures and other referances pretty darn well and understand light and shadow, what’s the next next step in art? I’d like to learn how to design creatures like from world of Warcraft, and draw and color them well! Thanks
The next step is assessing and enhancing your understanding of the the basic elements of art and design. Art and design have rules which, if you can understand at a fundamental level, will help improve your skills. These basics apply to every form of art, including figure drawing under which character design can be placed.
You can find videos on the fundamentals of art on the internet, and even articles and textbooks on them too.
You can watch videos on YT where character design is explained using the fundamentals of art and design ( I feel any good video on it would take this approach).
After understanding the basics you can choose real life references or references from artists you admire to study how these basics can be used to break down the reference you're using. You can watch or read on the work processes of artists designing their own characters and see how they do it.
For example, using two of the basics of design: Shape and Line.
You can't know character design if you don't understand human and/or animal anatomy (depending on what your character is exactly). And just like every other visual object, a human body can be broken down into shapes and lines, just like in this video.
Good gesture drawing (the art of depicting figure drawing poses) is done by using dynamic lines to depict the distribution of weight in a posing figure. Great for drawing characters mid action illustration or for depicting the type of body language of a character.
Good shape and line language means you're always able to depict your character in a unique or recognizable silhouette that conveys what the viewer is supposed to surmise of said character.
And that's just the little I know on two of the basics of design. Depending on the source, there are at least 5 to 8 other members.
Why can't I change the quality
I’m having a problem with your art school. I payed for it over a month ago, but upon downloading the videos, I was bored out of my mind, so I’ve only gotten through the first video and about 80% of the second one despite watching them on 2x speed and skipping chunks in between. I want to get to the point where I learn something, but at this point, it feels like a waste of time. I would skip week one entirely, but you specifically said not to, so I’ve been stuck on it for over a month because I have no motivation to continue. What should I do?
No idea how the course is structured since I didn't try it myself, but I'd say at this point, skipping part of it will always be a better choice than doing nothing, you paid for it anyway, might as well try.
Like I don't know, try skipping week one, and if you feel like you actually learn things then continue, if you feel like it's too much for you, simply go back a little bit until you're confortable enough?

At the risk of sounding a bit arrogant, I’m just going to say that, I feel as though this video should have been titled “How to draw characters in perspective”. Rather than “from imagination”.
Since learning to draw from imagination is really just about increasing your visual data base or “visual library”. While this video doesn’t really teach you how to do that exactly.
I hate to be that guy. Lol. I’m just saying this for the people that might not know the difference while watching this.
