Black River & Western #60 - Spring Steam Excursions

- In late Spring of 2013, Penn Rail Videos was in Hunderton County, NJ looking for some steam action. The Black River & Western would provide us with this steam action, in the form of their 1937 ALCO-built 2-8-0 #60. This stocky Consolidation type is still in her "Great Western Railway" dress-up, with the aluminum-painted smoke box, white running boards and white-wall tires from a Pete Lerro charter earlier in the season. Penn Rail Videos was unable to attend that Lerro charter, but we still wanted to see the engine painted into it's "retro" scheme. In this video, we'll follow #60 as it makes a roundtrip between Ringoes and Flemington, NJ along the former Pennsylvania Railroad trackage. And how fitting, on this day she was wearing a PRR 3-chime passenger whistle. Sit back, and enjoy some Spring steam action on the Black River & Western!
To clarify, that whistle lives in my garage, and while I WISH it was a Pennsy whistle, and it sounds like one, it's a plain old Lunkenheimer 3-chime. 60 usually has a Crosby, though one of our other volunteers does have a Pennsy 3-chime that ended up on 60 at least once this year. Regardless, thanks a ton for capturing some video of the engine (and a great job with that as always)! I was helping fire this day and couldn't get any myself.
I really apprciate your bringing NJ to my house.
He just loves the choo choo!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video, Adam! Especially liked the shot by Hunterdon Concrete along 202!
Thank you!
Awesome Video Man! Love the shot at 9:35!
Another great video - thanks!
They change the whistle time to time. This was definitely a Pennsy whistle.
another good video, keep up the good work
Excellent Video!
Thank you.
Awesome video
@Taylor - The tender was converted to roller bearings awhile back, hence no need for caps on the boxes. Actually, I've been told that you can't cover them so it's clear that they are rollers and not friction journals. Good catch though!
That Lunkenheimer 3 Chime sounds definitely like a PRR 3 Chime!
Great video. Nice job on catching the switching. You found some great spots to shoot from. In my opinion, If your out for a train ride with your family, why would you want to do 60 mph. It's not a commuter train. Plus from the looks of some of the track it could do 60 on them anyway. I'm going to get onboard the Christmas train, if possible, with the grand kids. Thanks for sharing.
Because it's a tourist train, not NJT. This is supposed to be a nice relaxing train ride for patorns. They don't need to be thrown around like cattle.
yup, that guy
Why can't 60 go faster on excursion service like she did back in the 80s & 90s? I know that she had an 11-year restoration but why can't she go a bit faster like back then?
was it the guy in the white shirt
Hate to break it to you, pal - but Strasburg doesn't go THAT fast. My estimates are 25-30 MPH when they need to make up time or are on charters and 20-25 as normal speed.
well that was me. Its really hard to see my camera screen so i need to bend down so i can pan it at the right time.
Why is that guy jumping around so much at 3:40? One thing important in good railfan photography, composure.
its too bad so much of the BR&W track needs work done to it, they could do a lot of good for the economy if they could run freight more efficiently
7:45 Wow, that is some seriously uneven track!
that have no journal caps for the journal boxes on the tender, that's real bad.
Scrap it already!
