  • I try to save the Haibo Steed by using a magnet kit that was designed to change the centrifugal brake Steed into a magnetic brake one. Does it work?

    Just curious, who actually has a Steed and how has it performed for you?

      I have one and agree about it’s performance. I was about to buy a GH100, but I am going to wait to hear about how it holds up to use.

      I have a white steed with centrifugal system and it work fine.... I Can launch very well 2.5 gr and i think it's good perform for this reel who have a 11.5gr spool weight.
      Cause it's centrifugal (i think), it's hard to control the Backlash if cast under the 2.5gr weight. (Cast 2gr is possible, but with very short distance....10 meters or something like that.

      Hey, you may want to pop open your GH-100. Both my reels had drags that were too stiff and pretty much sucked. I discovered the reel was full grease but the main gear and drive gear were dry as a bone. I used compressed air, blew out all the bearing, and greased the gears. I put a light coat of grease on both drag washers this made the drag smooth as silk. If your drag is stiff, you likely have the same issues I found. Heads Up good Buddy.

      i bought one of the newer model pflueger trions and it had the same exact weak magnets problem as the steed, so i returned it, now i am paranoid about buying any more magnetic reels. i did however buy a fishband 100 after i saw you test the magnets and am happy with it. i also recently purchased a couple slx reels and like'em

    As I stated in the comments on the previous video, the GH-100 will be my first BFS reel to start with, based on your reel reviews of all 3. Thanks for sharing the test results and saving me some money $$$ to put toward a Shimano DC reel in the future...

  • @ponycarguy
    @ponycarguy 5 років тому +1

    Those magnets definitely tamed mine as well in practice. I've got some other various magnet sizes coming to expirament some more but it is very usable. I now have all three of the budget reels in this video haha. Still haven't gotten to fish them much. I like the gh100 best from the practice sessions. The other two are probably a tie. The haibo feels better in hand and feels more solid but mine has an odd squeak when realing it. The xf-50 functions nicely and works great. With less line in the spool it does pretty well. I'm tinkering with it and some ceramic bearings. It does feel cheaper and plasticky but not aweful. All three are solid reels on a budget 👍.

    @the reel test, what you’re seeing is probably the effects of manufacturing tolerances. Measure the thickness of the magnet kit you bought (with and without spacer) vs stock. I’m willing to bet it sits much closer to the spool than the stock set up (and by much I mean at least around 0.010”)

  • @johnhamel8525

    Great video! I didn't have as much luck with the upgrade kit but it did still preform a little better. Maybe I should take it out again and try again fresh. I am still waiting for my gh100 to arrive so the xf50, Mr Charles (also with upgraded magnets ), and kingdom speed pro have been my bfs trout fishing reels. If I can get the steed working a little better it could bump the mr. Charles in the rotation, I like the other reels and think I will love the gh100

    Depending on what oil you are using for the bearings on Steed you might be able to use a slightly thicker oil to slow the spool down a little bit and make it more controllable.

    Hi, friend. It is fashionable to buy 5mm ×2mm neodymium magnets and replace the stock ones with new ones. The magnets are not glued and are held in place by magnetic force; there is a steel plate inside the lid. But it’s tedious to observe polarity and experiment with placement. Casting becomes predictable and less nervous. There is a Russian-language channel, where a person tested and told everything from his own experience.

    Maybe the lure weight limit of steed is belom 3 grams. Same as my case in my magnetic brake reel, i just add some magnet above of them or change them with the thick one. So i can cast more heavier lures with magnetic brake not fully up.

    Just a thought... you should try adding some hedgehog studio bearings in the gh100 to see if you can make it even a tad bit closer to the upgraded aldebaran bfs with the upgraded spool and bearings. It would be cool to see how far you can push it in the sense of how light of a lure it can cast

    no way that should have worked. Well I checked the magnet side of the spool. guess what it is not magnetic. It is aluminum. Lol joke on us. I glued a super thin tin washer. Problem solved. What a difference.

  • @gizmocarr3093
    @gizmocarr3093 5 років тому +2

    I must say congratulations on getting the dreaded Haibo Steed running like an economical Swiss watch. You called it many different names and now you may want to retract a few of them. One tiny adjustment you might try to further improve the braking that worked for me on one of my nemesis reels, I paid under $30 dollars for with no brand and God only knows who made that thing. I improve the brake power by turning out the two screws holding the magnetic disk. This moved the magnets closer to the spool and increased braking power. It only took less than ¾ of a turn to get the brakes working properly.
    My question is why do you enjoy bitch slapping the Tusrinoya XF-50? It is what it is heavy spool and all. You would think it said Daiwa on the side. By the way, I got two GH-100 reels and one of them had a slight defect. The brake drum assembly fell off inside the spool on setting five. It seems some genius hid the defect with a dab of super glue. However, the seller is sending me another assembly for a penny. If you happen to look at the parts schematic, you will see a reel that has a parts list that is clearly for the wrong dam reel. When this happen I was not a happy camper. Now it makes me laugh. The XF-50 is still the coolest looking reel for $46 bucks and that makes it perfect. If Tusrinoya or someone makes a lighter aftermarket spool then you may be eating a little crow for dinner.
    You Love Shimano reels but do you know this.
    LEW’S BB-1 SPEED SPOOL designed by Lewis Childre 1973 first casting reel made by Shimano. LEW’S SPEED STICK one of the First graphite rods 1970, LEW’S V-SPOOL, LEW’S HIGH SPEED RETRIVE, LEW;S TEARDROP DESIGN REEL. Without this guy, Shimano would not be one of the leading reel companies of today. Finally yet importantly LEW’S BB-XLM first ultralight Baitcasting reels. Do not think that for one minute the Japanese made the first casting reel. They are copycats just like all the others. Someone invented the wheel and it keeps going around and around.
    Historically Chinese paintings and records begin about 1195 AD. England 1650 AD, by the 1760 London tackle shops advertised multiplying retrieving reels. USA: Kentucky reels, Snyder and Meek reels, William Shakespeare, Jr created a level wind on a jeweler’s lathe and obtained a patent in 1896. 1907 Walter Marhoff improved the design and set the foundation of level-wind reels for years. Shakespeare added the Marhoff brand to its line. Pflueger Supreme, Vom Hofe and small custom models abounded thru 1870 to 1920. Sometimes you need look back before going forward. DING-POW! You know if I didn’t like you so much I would never tell you Poop.

    How about the stock magnets and the distance piece from the replacement kit? You did observe that the replacement magnets seemed to stick out further. If what you felt about the strength of the magnets is right it might just be a distance problem that can be solved by the shim. (Wrote this before you said that you forget the original magnets by the pond)

    • @THEREELTEST
      @THEREELTEST  5 років тому +1

      The shim was about as thick as the magnet ring so it would have been like just sticking one magnet ring on top of the other like I demonstrated in the 1st part. If you get a steed with a solid thumb bar then this mag kit is well worth the $9
