  • Today we're testing an interesting theory in Marvel vs Capcom 2 - why does War Machine assist do SO MUCH DAMAGE? Why was Iron Man able to do 50% in 1 second, without even starting his infinite? Is Tron Bonne no longer the most broken assist in the game? Let's do some testing and find out what makes these MvC2 combos work!

      The infinite isn’t super hard on someone like cable esp with iron man. Shit gets harder on things like sentinel also the set ups for the infinite are truly the hard parts.

    it feels like what really happened is certain multi-hitting moves (iron man/war machine repulsor, tron assist, ken and akuma air tatsus) were considered by capcom to be moves that COULD hit multiple times but usually wouldn't, so they gave them damage values with the idea that they were only going to hit once usually. This obviously didn't play out ... lol

      Nah, more hits on an assist is a big nerf to it's damage potential. It scales against itself and any follow-ups. They may have slightly overestimated its effect but all multi hit assists should do more then single hit assists, by at least 50%. Then consider increased setup difficulty for multi hits and yeah they should do a lot more.

      @@jakelink1482 some extra damage sure, but it's also fine for multihit moves to still be great for hit confirms with the trade-off of hurting your damage scaling, that's literally what makes the magneto vs doom beam assist conversation interesting in umvc3. Magneto's is less durable and harder to convert from, but the single hit means the scaling is awesome on it.

    I also used to think that a full lifebar in MvC2 is 143, but actually a full lifebar is 144.
    If you want to test that, go into arcade mode and repeatedly do any attack that does 1 point of damage and you will see it takes 144 to kill a character.

      I think the life bar might be 143 but a character dies when it is hit while having 0 health, that would explain why that, on training, it tops at 143 damage

      No. It’s actually 144 life points. The reason why it says 0 after 143 damage is because it’s the game’s practice mode preventing you from knocking out the character. Otherwise you get something like the practice mode in MvC1 where you KO a character & have to start practice mode all over again.

    Don't forget that in the video, the combo was done on Magneto, who takes more damage than Cable. This is why Magneto lost so much life in only a short amount of time.

    Its kinda interesting that though they seem to look identical it appears that Iron man and war machines respuslor blast assists have slightly different hit boxes, or is it the that they appear at slightly different postions when called. You would think they would be completely identical.

      They're just different characters. Lots of overlapping tools, but the movement, frame data, and properties of basically every move varies between the two

    Repulsor Blast is definitely the hardest hitting assist, Tron and glitched juggernaut punch are more well known because they are easy to hit in neutral. (On average, WM assist will do less than tron as you showed).
    As for the unscaled thing, I think it is because the assist is based on her crouching strong rings which are supposed to do 15 damage total. However, instead they do the 15 on each hit. Intentional or not, it does a crazy amount of damage.

      yea i think you're right, when she does that move as a point character it does 5 damage per hit (15 total), seems like someone accidentally made the assist do 15 per hit instead

      @@jmcrofts all assists that are medium normals (there's only a few) do the damage of that characters fierce attack. It's an exploit / oversight, probably because it only hits twice without a setup.

    Scaling starts after the first 4 hits. Usually since people do stuff like c.lk x 2 + tron at least 2 of those 3 hits from the assist will land unscaled. I agree with your theory.
    If you're looking for a set up to land a lot of Ironman assist hits. Launch with magneto sj. Hk ad df j. lk j.mk land s.hk 1 hit+im asssist xx hypergrav lk x 2 then otg followup to rom infinite.

    Hey you need to try the 50% chip damage by Spiral (ground type), Silver Samurai (projectile) and Serbot (balance), do triple team hyper combo at close range, with Spiral on point. This is the team with the highest chip damage in the game. Then you can do any DHC and Serbot is the safest of the 3. I do this for fun!

    Well all hits scale accordingly after the 3rd hit in a combo. The damage scaling goes as 100% for the first 3 hits and then 1 point less for the next two, then 1 point less off the scaled damage for the next two, so on and so forth. That's why so many supers do shit damage by the last hit. Unless the last hit is unscaled to a certain amount. Anyways, the original damage for each ring is 5 for a total of 15 damage I believe. And the creator fucked up and accidentally put 15 damage for each ring. So you get 45 damage total. Super's damage worth.

    I always play Iron man and War Machine together and War Machine I always choose projectile type due to DOUBLE PROTON CANNON. I LOVE seeing the missiles blast the oppon they wind up in a launched state due to said missiles hitting them.

    Only a minute into the video, never played this game before but just from that one clip my guess is they layered their attack in a way that made it so instead of being pushed out of the assist's hitboxes as intended, you're gravitated into it causing the assist to hit you way more times than intended dealing massive damage. If I got that right I'm buying myself a cookie

    My understanding of the Tron damage commentary is that the glitch was in the porting of her crouching strong punch into the assist. When you do crouching strong punch on point it does 5 damage with each ring leading to 15 damage total. For the assist it's 15 damage on each ring leading to 45 damage total. I think that's the origin of the statement that Tron rings are glitched.

    My theory with Tron assist is that they made each hit do heavy attack damage, instead of medium (Tron's assist is normally her c.MP). Since most normal-move assists are heavy attacks, this may have just been an oversight when programming her assist damage.
    As for Iron Man, I've managed to get 5 hits of the assist on fat characters (like Amingo) for a total of 60 damage. Not sure if I'll ever see 5 hits of that assist land in a match though lol.

    I play mags/sent/WM. War machine actually has a lot of undiscovered potential. For example he has very easy air to ground combos that go into the infinite that iron man can’t do; Iron man does have his own a2g variants but they’re much more technical. It’s also very easy for war machine to get all the hits from his assist with magneto (cross up trijump guarantees all hits and a rom infinite follow up) War machine can also do the sentinel HSF dhc trick off of war destroyer, whereas iron man proton cannon can dhc into HSF, but it doesn’t negate the damage scaling like WM, storm, Doom etc DHCs do. War destroyer is also a better dhc from magneto’s tempest than proton cannon is. War machine is HYPE.

    crouching light kick into heavy kick seems to set up super easily for the full hits... then you can infinite off of it pretty well.

    Romneto did a 2011 video on the most damaging assists in the game covering this (IM/WM repulsor blast are same hits & damage):

    There may be older videos. Either way I'm sure ppl found this tech out since the early years of MvC2.
    That being said, it's really cool to see newer gen players learning these things for themselves. It's like going back in time & reliving what the older gen players went through. It also shows there's a lot more new blood interested in this old game and that's really exciting.

    I'm guessing multi hit command don't scale once the the whole animation is finished but only attack that are in between like normals scales differently at the same time. Then when you do the command again in a combo, it will scale differently on how high the combo counter is.

      There’s most likely is. I’d even say some teams have probably not been used in top level play. There could be a crazy combo with Roll, Dan, and Captain America but top players won’t use them

    there is a combo reset in the air with war machine i won 2 tournys with back in 2000. its 100% health you just need to stall inbetween fierce and dash to jab in the air. i loved this game back in the arcades

    The special moves dont scale after the first hit of sad special...meaning whatever the scaling is when the first hit lands thats what the rest do, they wont scale further. this is why kens hurricane kick does so much without landing multiple hits first. this also applies to assist moves. you can recreate this with any special in the game (i am pretty sure anyway lol) as i tested this back when kens hurricane kick was all the rage using sabretooths birdie assist and seeing the damage of each bullet not scale after whatever the first value was on the first bullet.

      Works very similar to tron assist. It scales but each hit does a lot of damage, and for whatever reason air Tatsu does way more damage than ground, correct. They basically gave it the damage of a hard knockdown but didn't give it knockdown properties.

    magneto was stuck in the middle of the repulsor blast and ate all the beans that is supposed to be shooting at all directions, must be the wide hit box, and the scale might not have kicked in from only the launcher. the launcher is only TWO hits after all.

    Maybe if she starts as the third hit it doesn't scale. Like it's a set amount for the whole assist based on when it's used. For example on hit four it would start at 11 damage. Maybe it would be 11 three times. So it scales the total damage of the moved not by individual hit.

    I think the answer is all the assist count as 1 hit meaning that the full 5 hits of War Machine counts as 1 wich kinda explain why the damage is so high even after the 2 ironman hits

    i think tron bons assist story is it does damage on block in a wierd unintended way, as in it chips in a way that other assists don't do, in other words blocking it doesn't negate as much damage in comparison to other assists, no expert, could be wrong.

    I was always told that the Tron assist doesn't add to a counter for Undizzy or something like that, never actually heard the no scaling part... I just always assumed they did a lot of damage because they were never SUPPOSED to hit multiple times so they made each hit do a nice chunk of damage which... Sounds like MVC2 tbh... Thing was never supposed to happen therefore it happens anyways.

    Yeah, so the specific call about tron bonne assist is that it can be used to reset combo damage, I don't believe you actually combo it its some weird situation where the combo can reset before they are actually free to block but I was unable to confirm this claim either. So at this point I agree with you and you should update the Wiki for her so it stops suggesting otherwise.

    Might've been an uncombo that would reset the scaling
