I am a master of magic square. In your example 1,6,7 would have solved the square. My problem with merlin was no volume control and as I would play in bed my mom would scream at me to go to sleep because it is loud. I still remember muffling the speaker with my palm!
Very cool! I still have my Merlin from childhood. We had some pretty cool toys and electronics in the 1970s. Your video has inspired me to break mine out and make a video about it.
Guys I had a Merlin! What a blast from the past! Certainly brought a tear to my eye... Edit. I remember cards that you could place over the lights? Maybe a later version or a Merlin v2?
"Magic Square" is my favorite Game of the Merlin. It is absolutely not complicated. "Magic Square" belongs to a family of Games, which goes from 3x3 Playfield to nxn Playfield. A good way to learn "Magic Square" is to built the pattern from the Goal reverse, so you can learn the pattern.
This is really a neat toy and yours looks amazing for its age! I have a Microvision with 4 games all in the original boxes, I'm still learning how to figure some of them out but it's still really cool.
I got one of these for christmas the year they came out... it quickly became a constant companion and was sometimes used any anything but a handheld game... Over time it eventually stopped working and got put in a box never to be seen again. Just a couple days ago I finally gave in to nostalgia and got another one off ebay, and when it finally arrived... Well, it was like being reunited with an old friend I hadn't seen for a very long time. I got myself a huge pack of AA batteries and have been grinning like a damn fool for days now.
I had one of these growing up. Got it from a garage sale and no instructions. I think around three of the games I figured out how to play and the others had no clue.
A happy new year to everyone!

That's awesome! About the overlay, the Wikipedia mentions a 2004 re-release by Milton Bradley Company. Perhaps that one used it?

I remember someone taking this to school back in the day and playing this.

I just put batteries in my 1978 Merlin today for the first time in probably 30 plus years, it all works perfectly except the number one button LED.

Interesting device!
1 move must be always the centre one
I was 10 in 1978, so it was a computer to me like Star Trek.
Your username does not match your comment 😁
@@RetroGameCouch that's because 1980 was my favorite year, when I was 12
