I recently purchased the Gem 80 (late March 2024) and discovered that I often got two key strokes sent to my computer when I typed a key only once. A quick Google search showed that people have been complaining about this "key stutter" for months. They sent me a revised firmware that did not solve the problem. The keyboard is useless as is, and they should stop selling it until the bugs are worked out (if ever). 0:06
Woah, that is not good, and I must admit I had this issue too but thought that it was the switches (they were very light). I thought that because of that I accidentally kept hitting keys twice, I changed them out to a set I'm more used to and thought the problem wen't away, well almost... I still had the occasional double hit but dismissed it as not being used to the board 😞
I asked for a refund. Nuphy agreed but kept finding reasons to delay payment. Finally, I contacted my credit card compsny and sent them all the email correspondence. I received a credit from on my card the next day. I'm only out the $30 for return shipping (which Nuphy agreed to pay but never did).
@@howardabrams7116 Man... that's an absolute shame. I was willing to pull the trigger on it, despite being not ISO. Sounds a little like they don't intend to fix it... But thank you dearly for the quick reply!
So a little update for anyone interested: NuPhy said they fixed the issue in a support request from me yesterday (22nd of May 2024). In a parallel story, it is said that a few people that were over on reddit bound together and fixed the software themselves. The core issue in this is the support of NuPhy which has not been showing its gems in that situation. To this day, if you look around the web there's still no clear note if the issue has been successfully resolved or not. But apparently it has been with the Firmware Update 1.1.1, which was only released to Customers that had bought the Gem80. Now, firmware 1.1.4 has been made avaiable and was recently updated to 2.0.1. So I do suspect the issue is rectified.
That's a gorgeous keyboard. And to think beige is considered to be boring...The new mSA keycaps are nice; makes me wish Nuphy would give us Air owners a bit more nSA options (maybe also some alternative spacebar colors or even a low profile Ghost Bar wink wink, nudge nudge?). Great vid, as always. 👍🏼
Hey!! Just found your channel, and especially liked the "I wish I knew...." Because I myself am just getting into this hobby lol. You mentioned about constantly trying different boards to see what is good for me, but for me, I am not able to buy boards that frequently, nor try them because there are no stores for this in my country. So how do I experiment in a situation where it's hard to come by keyboards or accessories without having to spend a lot of money myself and potentially lose cash trying to resell them? With enough research will it work? Or no amount of research is equivalent to actually trying them myself? Love your work!! Hope to see more videos!!
All that real estate, plenty of room for rarely pressed keys...but no room for 25-cent media control(s). I mean come on they could throw a wheel or knob on the side and it would actually be unique in the space
Most of this is way over my head right now, but I’m really enjoying the NuPhy Air 75 v2, however I might make it my travel keyboard and get one of these for stationary regular use.
It’s OOS on their site for the wireless 😂. I shall search Taobao if they sell it though it might be more pricey. I love the $50 jiggle , KEEP IT UP LOL
Nuphy makes beautiful keycap for their boards. I have a air 75 v2. They are nice. I have a rk m75. they aren't as nice but still nice for the price plus I really love the veridian switch. If I wanted to spend twice as much I would definitely have loved to get the gem. The more rounded curve to the nuphy keycaps on their boards really gives it a nice look.
really enjoyed the video, gotta commend all the work on the sound tests and commentary on the different configs! I will say that having multiple layouts supported on a hotswap PCB (like at 10:00 or so) seems to be quite common these days, I’d almost expect more. For example, the Mode Sonnet hotswap PCB supports both stepped and regular caps, a 6.25u or 7u bottom row, and I’ve seen other boards with support for both a standard or split backspace (same with right shift) using flipped sockets.
@@CheeseTurbulenceMode’s got some cool products, have only used the Sonnet myself, but it feels super solid if a bit expensive in the current landscape.
I have liked mine quite a bit throughout the last couple weeks, definitely prefer the Gem 80 over the Halo 75 I was using for working from home previously. A couple minor niggles I encountered though: 1. I couldn't get the Gem 80 to work with the 2.4GHz receiver from the Air 75 V2 which I use in the office even though both dongles are superficially the same. Maybe it's just me not trying peristently enough though idk. 2. I somehow managed to rip out one of the space bar stab stems when removing the space bar key cap for the very first time. I panicked a bit when that happened since they don't offer spares of these proprietary stabs nor are any included in the kit. But taking everything apart, reassembling and relubing the stab seems to have fixed it just fine. Also this ripping out incident didn't happen again so I deem it just a fluke. 3. The matching key caps do have a very comfortable feeling profile - but their lower edge hovers ever so slightly over the top case edge. This makes them sound and feel a tiny bit more mushy due to the air turbulence than if they were ensconced as usual. 3a. I also really couldn't stand the NuPhy x Gateron Silent Red switches I got along with the board since they felt super duper mushy and have replaced them with Gateron Black Inks boxed immediately, so now it's all as I like it. Wish NuPhy offered some mid-heavy linear switches because I can't stand light ones. Finally, I was wondering how much your custom jingle might have cost so thanks for revealing that info! I have to say that's actually a very reasonable price. Hmmm, what possible use cases might I come up with for a custom jingle of my own...
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed the video 🙂 That is the HOTO Precision Screwdriver Kit Pro, you can get it here: hototools.com/discount/CHEESE? (affiliated) You can also use the code "cheese" to get 5% off 🙂
Excellent video! The keycaps from NuPhy are thick and very nice, I didn't really bond with the profile so I put Striker on my blue one. Still running FR4 and sock but going to remove some foam and try the POM with the softer beans. The ability to change this up so much and how easy it is to work on means a lot of options to play around with for some time!

Yeah some additional low-profile, profiles would be nice I agree 🤔 and thanks! 🙂
Great vid as always.
Thank you! 🙂
NuPhy is heavily underrated in the mech world. Great video and thank you for dropping $50 on the jingle lol
I definitely can confirm that. I’ve been searching for a new keyboard almost for a month now. And in this price range NuPhy offers an insane deal.
Money well spent I suppose 😅 and thank you 🙂
Although they're slowly getting momentum, so I'd say not for long. :)
If anyone here's still thinking about building a custom board... don't. Just get one of these. Much, MUCH better.
Thank you for introducing me to NuPhy and showcasing their boards!
Thank you for watching my videos! 😀

I'm ready to move on from tape mod and adopt cheese turbulence sticker mod
this is a very nitpicky request but i'd love to some backspacing in your sound tests - other than that great video!
That’s a good request! I’m gonna make sure to include them from now on 🙂

Does this board allow for the use of other switches outside of the Nuphy brand?
Yes! 🙂
3:50 its not sili-kin, its sili-CONE.
The only good color scheme imho.

The jingle was worth every penny.
I'd be genuinely interested in a video about their Halo V2 keyboards. I'm a bit torn deciding which one to get tbh.

Noctua calls, they want their colors back
I never thought about that, but good point 😅
Opens a video, checks if the board of any good, checks if it is ANSI only, moves on to the next one.

This is the best keyboard review I’ve seen
Thank you so much! 😅
Really hoped that the stabs would’ve been PCB mounted but still never the less a good board

excellent keyboard judging by the review, hope to get it soon
Appreciating the cheese turbulence joke jingle LOL
Those switches sound wild! Excellent video as always.
Thank you! 🙂
Branding on the face of the board is sadly an instant pass for me.
You can remove the Gem80 badge. It's magnetic!

First of all, thanks for all your insight! 🙂
And about the jingle, it cost me around $50, I had it made on fiverr: www.fiverr.com/s/jDBrxm?
hmm sounds probably too marbly for me 🧐
That ugly font Gem badge spoiled the board for me. I think it's nice for a newbie in the hobby. I'll better get this than the overpriced BauerLite
It can be removed as he shows in the video. It's magnetic!
You have me at the onigiri sticker.
Hello amazing video and love all details and truly a full review, wanted to ask what kind of screwdriver you used for the dismantling parts :)

Love the joke jingle! 😂😂😂😂😂
Amazing video as always. Will wait for this one to go on sale, the Mocha color is staggeringly beautiful. Legion Go video, when? 🙌
Thank you so much! 🙂
Legion Go will be after the next one, so a little while still 😬
Where did you get the brown foot pads?
They were included in my version, if you didn't get them maybe that was a pre-release thing 🤔 (NuPhy didn't mention anything)
Man, that's a seriously good video, keep it up!
Thank you! 😀
criminally underrated. keep it up!

This montage is a work of art!
