- The smiles were wide and contagious when Martin Taylor and Frank Vignola returned to the KNKX studios for a guitar duet performance. Regarded as two of the best acoustic guitarists in the world, our studio audience also shared their intense love of music and joy of playing that came shining through.
Both Taylor and Vignola found an early passion for the gypsy jazz swing of guitar legend Django Reinhardt. Taylor played as a young man with Reinhardt's longtime partner, violinist Stephane Grappelli. One of Vignola's first bands was his Hot Club, based on those classic swinging sounds of France in the 1930s. Together, they're a cheerful earful of exuberant jazz.
I spoke to them about the magic of guitar collaborations, both of whom have spent a career in such settings. They talked about the natural, communal nature of the guitar, and about their common language in a shared love of the good old songs. "It's like when you fall in love," Taylor told us. This is a match made in heaven.
We also talked about Vignola's recent ATV accident which required more than a year to recover and regain his guitar chops. Not only does he feel lucky to be alive, but lucky to be able to keep playing. Vignola also found a silver lining during his year off, he really loves his family. "I'm getting wise about how I spent my second half of my life that was given back to me. These past two months have been as busy as I've ever been and it feels just great. But, I know in March I can go home and have one month off."
I asked both about their chosen acoustic instruments and considering Seattle's reputation as the home of loud, rock and roll guitars. Neither of them has much interest in distortion pedals and heavy metal theatrics, but Taylor told us he was deeply inspired at age 12 seeing Jimi Hendrix perform in London. "It sounded like a jazz trio to me. There was all this interplay going on."
It was a session of the good old songs from Taylor and Vignola on this day in the KNKX studios. Standards like "Blue Moon" and "Out of Nowhere" were given fresh voice from these virtuosi guitarists. And as good as they are, hearing Martin & Frank play feels like listening to good friends simply having some fun.
Martin Taylor and Frank Vignola are incredible technicians on their instruments, but what's most charming about this duet is the passion for the music and the mutual admiration they shared with each other and our studio audience. It doesn't get much better than this!

Excelent music !! Masters
Lovely
This listens so well ...
Outstanding!
Martin is truly amazing !
Great duet! And the quote from Angel Eyes was cool!
Frank swings ferociously. Martin, a more diffident, polite type swings warmly. Both are amazing. Further, they are so seemless in tone, and in switching from lead to accompnaying, that If I couldn't see them ,I'd have a hard time picking out which was playing lead at a particular time. (Frank does play more rhythm chord background). While I am always reluctant to comment on appearance (I myself look like a dissolute sea captain) Martin's eyeglasses give him an owlish aspect. ;)
Very very good
So good, two masters, thanks for sharing it!!
You bet! Thanks for watching!
Great stuff. Reminds me of Martin's playing on 'Spirit of Django' (great album)!!
Yeah, great to have captured the acoustic sound, and no amp ;) Super sound, super players

As good as it gets ...
wow
Thanks for watching Seokmin!
How do these guys remember all that from memory ? Off the sheet ! Wonderful technique and in sync.
Well, most of it is improvised, so they just have to remember the chords and melodies. But they are on a level of their own as players.
They've been playing these tunes for a very long time and have such command of the fretboard and chord/scale relationships that it just comes out. Every bit of this is improvised including the chord subs against the original harmony. I take lessons from Frank so I have some insight into his approach to the instrument and music.
@@crazyb3fan You are one lucky guy. On-line lessons I presume.
I’ve been “attempting” jazz guitar for 17 years. These guys have been playing these old standards longer than I’ve been alive (I’m 43). I would guess over 100k hours of practice, and literally years on stage.
Grandi chitarristi
Double extra super tasty. These stars rock.
That put SUCH a smile on my face!!! BTW are those Austrian Audio mics? Such a beautiful recording.
They are AKG 214s! Thanks for watching and your kind words!

What is that 1st song?
What are the archtops the masters are playing? Great sounding both acoustically. This is important for a solid- woods archtop with a suspended pickup.
i know Frank
Why can't video people take both musicians playing in One shooting. We want want to see both musicians playing at the same time. Not separately. It can't be that difficult. PLEASE!!!

Martin sounded better playing that Yamaha with the built in humbuckers way back. Not keen on this guitar.
It seems to me that Martin Taylor is extremely proficient, but I'm sorry. I find him a chore to listen to.
