    For me, the worst part about this movie's portrayal of Phoebus, apart from being a complete 180 on his established character that makes it look almost like the movie wants HIM to be the villain at times (and not in a way that's accurate to his book version, but more as if it was an attempt to spite him for being the one Esmerelda chose over Quasimodo), is that it's all done in service of a moral that falls flat on its face.
    The "Well-intentioned character with unexamined personal prejudices" concept is something that Disney actually got RIGHT with Judy Hopps in 'Zootopia'. Heck, even Disneytoon did this better with Simba in 'The Lion King 2', not only because Simba had an understandable reason for not trusting a bunch of lionesses who were supporters of Scar, but also because the movie also gave him a moment where he attempts to re-examine his preconceptions and consider Kovu possibly worthy of being accepted, with the scene involving his monologue about how "Scar couldn't let go of his hate" (before the ambush scene that does reveal that Kovu had indeed been trained to set him up for Zira to take down).

    • @fablethewolf825
      @fablethewolf825 2 роки тому +3

      It’s almost like the typical ‘nice guy’ narrative of today. In the original movie, Phoebus was the rival who “stole” Quasi’s “girl”, and the idea is that he’s actually a horrible person who tricked the woman; if only she’d given the nice guy a chance.

    • @jacobbelow4136
      @jacobbelow4136 2 роки тому +11

      @@fablethewolf825 Except that to suggest that Esmerelda was ever “stolen” from anyone is really quite insidious, because it implies that she’s more important as the object of others’ affections rather than her own person with her own agency. There’s no reason she shouldn’t fall in love with Phoebus, as he has been standing up for her even before he knew who she was, even putting his own life on the line to help her and her people, more for the benefit of her well-being over his own, just as Quasi did; he was never out to “win” her over anyone. The fact that Esmerelda has two men who would fight to the end to save her should mean more for her, not less for Quasi (especially since she still values him in the end and helps him find what he needs). And the fact that Quais is able to recognize and accept that is what makes him more than just a self-proclaimed “nice guy”.
      Like with that Phantom of the Opera musical sequel, ‘Love Never Dies’, vilifying one love interest in order to make the other look better, is just lazy writing.

    • @thomashuffman3237
      @thomashuffman3237 Рік тому +6

      I can tell that with Phoebus they were trying to do an “anti-discrimination” moral, but it fails for these reasons: First of all, circus performers are not a race, like the Romani, so the allusion fails. Secondly, Phoebus was absolutely right. They WERE stealing! And yet, the movie desperately wants to paint him as the one in the wrong.

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 8 місяців тому

      Personally I think Esmerelda was a bit of a bitch in this movie too. Phoebus does turn out to be correct about the circus and had the proof when he found the necklace under Mickey’s sorcerer’s hat. The thing that irks me is Esmerelda never actually apologized for accusing him of being racist or whatever when he was right about the circus. Imagine if Seruge actually was a gypsy that was taking advantage of the stereotype of Romani being untrustworthy because they “stole” people’s money by using “magic” aka circus tricks, and Phoebus sees while not all Romani people are good, Seruge was one example. But I also don’t like how Esmerelda was portrayed more as a stereotypical Gypsy, especially with the part of her having a crystal ball to tell Quasimodo’s future. I think Es was actually in the movie the least amount, which is really sad considering Disney made her a mom. Imagine if the story was more focused on Zephyr’s struggles as a half breed. But yeah, Phoebus’s portrayal in this movie was very similar to John Smith in Pocahontas 2, where he was turned into this huge narcissistic jerk who didn’t give a crap about Pocahontas’s people or their safety. He only saw Pocahontas as a trophy wife and was too focused on what he wanted in life, which was exploring. He even makes fun of her and tries to talk her out of seeing the king again, saying she’s nuts and he doesn’t believe in her abilities as a woman (despite he saw her end a war by herself)

    • @kristinahuchison2511
      @kristinahuchison2511 8 місяців тому

      But yeah, I don’t like how the scenes it showed Phoebus and Esmerelda being lovey dovey, it almost made fun of the fact Quasi didn’t win Esmerelda’s love in the end. There’s literally a scene where they make out in front of him and Zephyr and Quasi agree how gross kissing is, almost trying to spite Esmerelda choosing Phoebus over Quasi. While I’m not a fan of why it ended that way, I think Madeline was a better fit for Quasi, I wished they explained it a lot better as to why Quasi falls in love instead of “let’s make the sequel be about Quasi getting a girlfriend because he lost in the first movie!” Like if Quasi was no longer living in Notre Dame and maybe opened his own carpentry shop and his specialty was making toys and small wooden figurines. He makes it clear he’s happy as a bachelor and loves the new life he has. And he meets Madeline as a customer or tourist or something and she isn’t afraid of his looks?
      Honestly I don’t even get why Quasi is still permanently stuck in Notre Dame. Yeah he knows how to take care of the bells and stuff, but why is he not allowed to move on to be more interactive with the townsfolk instead of being stuck with his annoying friends? Even in the short Once Upon a Studio, I honestly don’t understand why Disney felt the need to include the gargoyles at the end with Quasi.

    What really strikes me about the sequel (apart from the obvious) is how SMALL everything seems to be. Notre Dame feels like a tiny church, Paris like a village, the fest seems to have only a handful of participants. And I know that this is partly because they didn't have the money for mass scenes, but it is also the way everything is scaled. There is no understanding for the right angles.

    The thing is, the original movie _did_ do ‘normal Quasi for a second. It’s in a deleted song called A Place of Miracles’, which was supposed to be before Frollo raided the Court of Miracles. Quasi, his crush and Esmerelda still a thing, is depressed. Clopin sees this and offers the guy a drink. Quasi catches his reflection in the cup and and shocked; the cup has distorted his face to look normal. And you know what? It didn’t look so bad at all. If anyone wants to see, it’s available to see on this site.

    The whole "protagonist gets a love interest" sequel plot is just because Disney doesn't want characters to die alone... They gotta have SOMEBODY TO LOVE or they will be sad. Gotta follow the normal status quo for coupling in late 90s/early 2000s Disney fare - every lead character has gotta be with someone eventually or they won't be truly happy! ...ick, no.
    The writers for this sequel clearly were people who hated that Quasimodo, a guy that looked "ugly" but had a good heart for helping others despite it all, didn't get Esmeralda, an outcast that was judged by who she was but was lusted after by THREE CHARACTERS in the original film (Phoebus, Frollo, and Quasi) for different reasons, and they thought "hey, let's give Quasi the happiness he deserves! Let's send him a girlfriend so he won't be alone anymore!" Yeah... he got his happy ending in the first film - he accepted Esmeralda choosing Phoebus over him (he wasn't malicious about it either) & even learned to be with people on the outside of the cathedral, gaining the acceptance that he always yearned for. That... that is a happy ending that is still satisfying to this day, and many people right now want this as well.
    But nope. Gotta follow the standard sequel formula & make a pretty love interest for the hunchback man, have them eventually hit it off before something goes wrong to make them break up... and then by the climax, ALL IS FORGIVEN & love takes hold.
    Despite him being an annoyance, I agree with Zephyr (who, by the way, is Esmeralda & Phoebus' kid... what, has it been 6 years or so since the end of the first film? Dang, they had him QUICK.) on this plot: "yuck".
    I'm glad they stopped this sort of forces plotline in a lot of Disney movies. The "Frozen" series has kept Elsa single & she's fine on her own (although her sister did have a more believable plot that used romance, but she had her reasons... and almost perished for making the wrong choice; at least Anna did eventually get her true love story, so that's good, but it did take time for marriage... and same for "Tangled" with their princess love story), so things have definitely changed... but only recently... somewhat.
    At least newer romance plots in Disney properties are still better made than this one. This film is bad... but overall, not the worst of the DTV sequels; I actually think... it could've been a lot better. I DO think, however, it's the worst "forced romance" plot in the sequels... and that's not including "Brother Bear 2".

    Honestly, I can forgive some of the bad Disney sequels like The Little Mermaid 2 and The Jungle Book 2 because at least they felt like the writers were putting some effort into character development and story even if it didn't stick the landing. But Hunchback 2 doesn't feel like there's any passion behind it at all. It feels like a fanfic written by someone who was angry that Quasimodo remained single at the end of the first movie and didn't understand the point of the first movie. The reason Quasi ends up single is because it shows how different he was from Frollo. Frollo was so obsessed with Esmeralda that he'd rather kill her than being rejected by her. Whereas Quasimodo, while heartbroken when Esmeralda rejected him, still valued his friendship with her and respects her choices.
    On top of that, women should not be treated as a reward for the protagonist. It's insulting and degrading to women. Besides, wasn't it enough that Quasi is now accepted as a member of society and can now walk on the streets without people being horrified at his deformity?
    On a side note, I really hated how this movie confirmed that the gargoyles are actually alive when the first movie heavily implied that they were Quasi's imaginary friends (even their involvement in the final battle could easily be interpreted as Quasi's wishful thinking).

      Jungle Book 2 wasn't THAT bad. I liked that Shanti was a main character with more screentime and plot relevance and that she and Mowgli are close friends instead of Shanti just being his satellite love interest. Tho my opinion on Ranjan changed a bit. As a kid I thought he was cute and endearing, but now I realize that he was pretty annoying cuz he fricking screams most of his lines. Seriously, Ranjan yells half of his lines at the top of his lungs for no apparent reason, and most of his lines are just him screaming *MOWGLI!* XD He's still cute tho, just a chore to listen to. Eh, again, Jungle Book 2 wasn't THAT bad. Tho even as a kid I noticed something super wrong: *HIPPOS DON'T LIVE IN INDIA!*

      @@cintronproductions9430 I agree that Shanti is a good character and I really appreciate how her relationship with Mowgli allows them both to learn from each other which only strengthens their romance. I also liked how Mowgli is more mature than he was in the first film, most likely because he's socializing with his own kind now. But I really don't like how Baloo basically forgets everything he learned in the first film about responsibility and decides to take Mowgli back simply because he misses him. If they really wanted Mowgli back in the jungle, they should have had Shere Khan take his wolf family hostage and threaten to kill them unless Mowgli agrees to face him and Baloo only goes to the village to deliver the message. Then they could have Shanti follow him out of a misunderstanding like what we got and together they combine their skills to defeat Shere Khan.
      But let's be honest here, after Mowgli leaves the village, the movie basically becomes a rushed rehash of the original.

      @@buster3041 I didn't say that. I said that women should never be treated as a reward. Also, this movie basically implies that you can't live happily without a romantic relationship and that him being accepted as a human being is somehow not enough. And Quasi being single was actually rather refreshing considering he's the only Disney protagonist of the Disney Renaissance that ends up being single (and one of the few in the entire Disney canon, along with Pinocchio, Dumbo, Peter Pan, Alice, Jim Hawkins, Lilo, Moana and Raya). Romantic love is good, but there's so much more to life than just that. The first Hunchback movie captured that message so well, but the sequel undermines it.

    Update on the fix fic: Since UA-cam hates links even within its own site, I'll just direct you: Rewriting Hunchback of Notre Dame II, on Ao3 and FFN. Here is a spoiler-free list of some of the things I fixed:
    -That. Stupid. Bell. It does not have jewels. It exists to be a Redwall shout out. And yes, that is a tremendous improvement.
    -There is no "festival of love." The setting event is the pope coming to Paris in a few days to bless the new bell that was cast just for him.
    -Zephyr has dark hair and darker skin than Phoebus.
    -Zephyr has a personality that consists of a lot more than, "My best friend is Quasimodo."
    -Madellaine does not exist to be a love interest for Quasi, she exists to demonstrate that slavery is not always maintained by literal chains. But she and Quasi still do have mutual feelings, just to keep the shippers happy.
    -Phoebus does not suffer from situationally acquired racism.
    -Sarousch is actually a legitimate threat. He's not in town to steal an unrealistic bell, he's there to get revenge.
    -I explain Sarousch's ethnic ambiguity and narcissism.
    -The gargoyles aren't animate.
    -Clopin has way more of a role in my version than he even did in the book.
    -Esmeralda honestly doesn't have much more to do in my version than she did in the sequel film, but she is still the catalyst for the events of the story.
    -I use proper terminology for the Roma, at least as much as I can. I still use the word "Gypsy" in a historical context.
    -Before the villain's introduction, the conflict/motive of the story is trying to maintain peace between the Roma and non-Roma in order to prevent the king from deporting them to countries where slavery is legal. Don't worry, they get diplomatic immunity in the end, thanks to Clopin.

    Here's yet another issue. I don't know if he discussed this in the extended video because I haven't watched it yet, but someone else pointed out how the subplot with Phoebus fails miserably. It was supposed to be "He's assuming the carnival people are bad just from appearances," but the thing is the carnival people really were bad (with the possible exception of Madallaine). It's shown throughout the movie that they're up to no good, so the "You're being judgmental!" thing doesn't work. A character confronting their prejudices and learning to stop judging people can be a good plot, but not when it turns out they were completely right in not trusting the people in question. It reminds me of the movies in which witches/mutants/any sort of beings with unusual powers and/or appearances are depicted as falsely accused of being dangerous, destructive, and malicious, but then are depicted as being dangerous, destructive, and malicious while the movie still expects you to think, "Oh, they're so misunderstood!" (I'm not referring to movies with the "I was treated like a monster so I became one!" trope; I mean the movies that do a 180-degree turn and don't expect audiences to think about it)

    For me, the biggest insult this movie does to the original (save the fact that it merely exists), is that it was all done just to get Quasimodo a girlfriend, and that so little care was put into the rest of it. I find that to try to justify the movie being made just to get Quasi a girl regardless of the quality of the rest of it, low-key implies that the passion and effort put into the songs, the animation, and everything that mad the first movie so breathtaking, ultimately doesn't matter (or even like it's something to be ashamed of). I think that's worse than anything said by the first movie's biggest detractors, be they Victor Hugo devotees or just overprotective parents who don't want their kids to see the first.
    Compounded by this is the fact that Michael Eisner said that the original Hunchback was his favorite Disney film! (Yes, really!) You'd think that even if he had lost his touch, he might have at least attempted to push for something of at least slightly higher quality.
    Even worse is that this movie reportedly started production same time as 'Lion King 2'. The latter came out in 1998, while this one didn't come out until 2002 (with a 2000-copyright logo at the end credits). So it seems like Disney just left it sitting soon the shelf for years without any attempt to polish it up.

Every shot, the angles and placement of the backgrounds and the characters is really really competent. I think what makes the animation so bad is that it HAS to work with the constraints of style, scale and character design of the first movie, but with a tiny percentage of its budget, which means, among over things, no shadows, and boring design for new characters. I think the animators and story-boarders that worked on it are talented (after all they are at Disney), but working with impossible constraints.
    The story is still shit though. It sounds like it was a total cash-grab written in a week by people who didn't care about the first movie and never read the book.

    I used to love this movie cuz as a child we couldn’t afford much stuff so I had few movies to watch (at that time I hadn’t seen many disney movies, the only other ones I had were Winnie the Pooh and the Lion King trilogy) but I had The Hunchback of Notre Dame II on dvd so it was one of those that I played over and over until it was all scratched and lagged when playing it. I know the animation wasn’t very good (or the story), but this was the first Hunchback movie that I saw. It still has a spot in my heart❤
