OT Student here... seeing these visuals for each grading scale (0-5) was super helpful! Thank you for the help!

Thank you for making this very clear video about grading! I've been out of practice for a very long time raising kids, so this helps exponentially!

How do you grade for patients that have 5/5 strength within their available range of motion, but do not have FULL range of motion due to soft tissue limitations (example, someone who had a rotator cuff repair who has really good strength, but not full range of motion?)

Great question. There is debate among PTs about that. Some say if they are unable to do Full ROM regardless they can't be a 3/5. However, I worked with a PT that uses the Full Available to whatever ENDFEEL (hard, firm, soft, pain). Like your patient if they could only abduct 90 degrees before pain but they can actively get to 90 and hold resistance then they can score at or above a 3. I like the later. Your thoughts?

@@InstructorBrooks totally agree with you on this one! I think it’s more accurate (in terms of documentation, especially) to grade based on available range of motion. I think if they are truly limited in range because of weakness, rather than pain/soft tissue limits, it is definitely below a 3/5, but it doesn’t make much sense to me to give someone with exceptional strength in their available range that grade if the source of their ROM limitation is not weakness.
Thanks for the reply & clarification!! It’s nice to know that I’m not the only one who ponders this thought.

@@Katie-xs9ju In OT, we often say "X/5 within available range" but based on the above discussion, I will make a point to be more clear about the reason for the ROM limitation. Thanks Instructor Brooks!

Are the grades 5 or 6 in total with 0 being included as the first?
