Icon has 22" drawers. Series 3 is 19.5" drawers. The Icon IS taller every so slightly. Icon is the box I want but the Series 3 is the price I want to pay.🤷♂️
I bought 2 of the 56" Gen 2 a couple of years ago- wound up "loaning" one to a nephew starting out with mechanicing ( he really wanted a Snap On, but between just starting out and starting a family, it wasn't going to happen) Haven't heard him say a word about Snap On since . . .
I grabbed the green Series 2 72' US General roller cabinet at my local Harbor Freight store on clearance two weeks ago. It had the clearance price of $1,299, but mine was the last one display with a few scratches and missing the tab drawer labels so the manager gave me an additional 10 percent off. THEN since I did not have a Harbor Freight credit card, I applied for the card, got approved, and got ANOTHER 10 percent off of the whole purchase I made including the roller cabinet(I bought a bunch of drawer organizers like the socket trays). I am VERY happy with this. Since the Series 2 and Series 3 are compatible, I plan to buy the green hutch and the side cabinets when they become available. This Series 2 consolidated three smaller triple stacked Craftsman tool carts. My primary tool carts are now this Series 2 72", a stacked gold series Craftsman, a blue collector edition Kobalt roller cabinet, and a Kobalt roller cart with 1/4" and 3/8" socket/driver set loaded drawer.
I like the new top box design with the micro hutch, but I would prefer if they deleted a row of drawers to make that hutch a little taller. That would give it more room for chargers and the big batteries.
Also I think if you have a lot of tools even two of the 34” full service boxes would make more sense than one of the 72” boxes. The 34’s are on sale for $499 so even if you get two you are saving money and they will be easier to move if you ever have to move them.
That’s a great idea. I guess it just depends on how much space you have, and what you use them for. That’s the cool thing about all the different size combos. One of us “geniuses” will figure out something really cool. Lol!
Well with the service boxes you lose about six inches of storage space, you also have less variety of depth. With the 72 you also have options for a hutch and upper cabinet to save square footage. The service carts are great for moving from one project to another, the 72s are better to keep at larger jobs, with more specialized tools, there pros and cons to both. You can get more bang for your buck with service carts, but more tools per square foot with the 72 and an upper cabinet
Thanks for such an excellent, thorough comparison. I didn’t know anything about the Icon units. I’m going to HF tomorrow to look at these in person again and hopefully take one home.
I got the US G 2 72 a number of years ago with a -$200 coupon for $1K and sold my old 30 year old Craftsman . Other than adding rivets to tighten the drawers it has been great for everyday use. The right latch release doesn't bother me. Green one to go with my green tractors.🙂
Harbor freight prices are treading up and up. Shipping cost must be killing them. The bottom 72 box probably cost them around 150 and it’s probably around 150 a piece in bulk for shipping. That’s about right 300 cost total with a 3.5x markup on avg.
Shipping a 40 foot container from China is actually at 2018 rates, now. Last year, rates spiked at over $10,000 per container with some shippers charging $20,000 per container. Still, retailers must make up that extra cost from last year with this year's, (and next year's) merchandise.

@dancooper6002 In theory, yes. I bought one of the General 54" series 2 roll aways couple years ago for primarily for storing raw material in it for my shop. The three lower drawers were tested to their limits on weight carrying capacity. Had to line the bottoms of the drawers with 1 x 12 lumber to keep the bottom from sagging. With all of the weight in the lower drawers, the cabinet started to buckle at the bottom between the long and short drawers. It's now setting on a stack of 4 x 4's to keep it from totally buckling into a disaster. The loaded down drawers are opened slowly so the ball bearing slides don't tear up. Yes, they are lubricated with some light grease. Overall, I'm quite satisfied with the cabinet. Thanks for posting the review. May have to buy a gen 3 in the future.

The good news is, you can remove that latch mechanism and have it like the Icon. I saw a video of someone removing it for the service tech cart. So if it's exactly the same for their other series 3, should be able to remove it with no problem.
I have a couple of the old Husky Tool Cabinets with the dedent draws but I am not a fan, they quickly stop holding the draws and if you move them across a shop the draws randomly open. The new Husky have the spring assist closing and that keeps the draws tight. The Gen 2 US General with the latch works but I've broken them and then the doors have nothing holding them. We'll see how good are the Gen 3, at least it looks like you can replace the draw locking strip without drilling out a rivet but it's all plastic and might not hold up.
Remove the latch and put 2 of the magnet blocks out of the magnet bar (I got the magnet bars when they were free) and I'm very pleased with the modification
The one thing i noticed is that the USG series 3 boxes feel very much like Snap On classic series boxes, where as the Icon feels like Mac Tech series boxes

I own the 72” series2, a year ago a painted all the trim black. I took it all the trim off and painted it. It looks awesome and I like the drawer configuration in my box anyways. I am a tall guy so a power drawer all the way down there its no appealing to me. The hutch as it is is short to me too but its better than that power drawer.
I've been looking at the us general series 3. I really like it. I used to have a series 2 that I sold. Now I'm looking at buying the series 3 72 inch, but I'm having a hard time finding out what gauge steel it's made out of. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
In my opinion, series 2 was the better box between the 2 and 3. The 2 had 18 Drawers in the cabinet with 29,500 cu. in of storage. The 3 has 14 Drawers and 29,700 cu. in. For storage yes the 3 have more storage going by the numbers but it doesn't because they make up the extra 200 in draw height and a taller height would only be good if you are going to stack tools on top of each other.. As far as the Icons # 2 and 3 are no place near the class of it
Awesome information I’ve reached out to my local store to clarification of the series 2 72in tool chest No one can give me the correct answer maybe you can How can know if I have the series 2 72in maybe by the size of the drawers or the latches Thanks for any information you can give
I have several in yellow, which I really like. But that grey is fantastic. What’s happening with the 26” roller cabinets? Is the Series 2 being discontinued, or is it going to stay around, with not Series 3 replacement? Same for the 44”.
I use to work for the phone company and met Customers in an area called Drew Park in Tampa. I was dumbfounded at the price they paid for SnapOn tool boxes. One Auto Repair Owner told Me that in order for Him to get Insurance they forced Him to buy those giant tool boxes because of the crime in His area. His setup up was so huge and His locking system was so massive that a thief would not have enough time to break into the box and steal His tools. He said they would need a tow truck to steal the whole tool box.
I dont need a box that large i have a 6 drawer full bank already i need a smaller cart do you have any idea when there will be a series three cart or smaller box
How long do you think it will be before some idiot slams the drawers or the hutch lid into that metal pole and causing a huge dent or two ruining a good box and hutch?
I don’t like the locking drawers on a toolbox. On the tool carts it is a good feature but not on a box. The icon tension mechanism is perfect but my local stores don’t have an icon box so I can’t test it out. I will spend more money for that feature alone. When your working on something time is usually against you and the locks will annoy most people.
How does the build quality of the Series 2 56" box compare to that of the Series 2 72"? Ive seen videos talking about how great the 72" box is, and ive seen how well built they are, but I havent seen anyone talk about the 56" in comparison. The 72" does seem to be a more premium box with the caster selection, and the price was almost twice as much. The series 3 stuff looks pretty cool, but Im not sure if I wanna wait for the release of the Series 3 56"
Good video, thank you :D I wonder if the series 3 power drawer is the same dimensions as the large drawer on the series 2 and can be fitted into the series 2 box? :D lol.
They really should have went an inch deeper but they wanted to stay compatible with gen 2 , that's a poor excuse if that's true. If I'm buying 72" even 56" I'd like a 25" deep min really, the 22" deep works but meh. And a big one Put the drawers in the right ✅️ the wide drawers in the right, like the Matco boxes. Why do I need to go to the corner of the room to open the main drawers. I can't find a gen 2 56" anywhere. I might shoot for a gen 3 56, and wait for the Nov black Friday deals
Just like a lot of the new cars, BLACK Trim! I put out that much money for a new tool box, I want some CHROME handles. "Course, I'm old, but the black looks cheap to me. Any word from your contacts at HF about offering chrome trim packages?
The only difference in the 3 vs the 2 is the full drawer pull wrap, no stupid side release mechanism, painted trim pieces, and paint color options? That's it? Glad I got the 2?
Well… More robust wheels, slightly more storage, double full length drawers, single locking mechanism, power drawer, and full modularity so that no matter what boxes you put together the sizes aren’t off. But when it comes to day-to-day functionality, there really isn’t much of a difference.
Here's the short version. HF realized they had a snap-on (ish) quality box in the original us general line. HF need more money... so it seems (LMFAO) they went husky quality with the us general series 3, discontinued what we knew as the orig us general . Moved the great quality of the orig us general over to produce ICON & jack up the price.
I own a 72” series 2 box. It replaced an old 44” series 1 box, which replaced an even older 26” box. I want to see a series 3 in person, so I can compare it to my series 2. So far, as of this last Sunday, my local harbor freight store didn’t have the 72” series 3 in stock in their store on display. I’m going to check again this Sunday. I wonder if anyone who owns a series 2 box buys a series 3 box and does a side to side comparison.
I have a 25 yr old that is paying off payments for his toolbox bc he bought one off a truck for around 11k, lol I'm about to buy a series 3 on sale for $1350. And both are 72" and the US General actually has a higher load capacity too. No payments vs a car payment basically, hmm that's an easy one.
If I could give zero I would. I recently ordered a toolchest online,us general 72in to match the one I bought 7 months ago. It was on clearance, new series was coming. Order went through order in possessing. I wait about a month 21 biss days for ship, I hear nothing so I call first lady says they are looking for a shipper. So I wait another week hear nothing so I call and get a lady says sorry item is back ordered and may or may not show up from China and my order will be canceled card refunded is there anything else I can do for you she says. Mean while my card was charged the day I made my order and my credit score dropped aswell when they damn well know they don't have the chest. Harbor Freight is the worst
So I went and check series 3 boxes today. 11/2023 I couldn't believe the cheesy latch mechanism, little plastic thing on one side of drawer ? Wow, talk about cheap, instant break design, all to save a few bucks. Disappointing. Looking hard for a series 2, but it seems I'm a little too late to the game for that.
I agree, went by HF today and looked at the series 3 42 inch box.. The latch mechanism wouldn't open and actually broke while I was trying to open it. The series 3 also down size from 44 inch to 42 inch box. Very disappointing!
I love all this stuff your showing us but im just a guy who needs to keep his own cars on the road. I would never need these huge boxes allthough i do like them! You would be shocked how many guys are working on their own cars these days with all the inflation going on. I cant leave the neighborhood without seeing guys working on cars in the driveways with cheap tools and cheap jacks and so on.
A friend of mine recently retired from a dealership. He had a huge Snap on toolbox. Granted it was old. Probably 30 years old. Anyway he sold it because he bought a smaller US General box for home. He told me the Snap on box was literally falling apart. My point is they don't last forever.
I like the way the series 2 looked better especially the verticle trim pieces that got deleted on the S3. I like the drawer latch better w the S3. The way the S2 don't open all the way is occasionally iritating.
That’s what I want to see for myself in person, I own a 72” series 2 box so I can compare. My local harbor freight store didn’t have the series 3 box on Sunday, gonna check again next Sunday.

As far as the Icons # 2 and 3 are no place near the class of it
Awesome information
I’ve reached out to my local store to clarification of the series 2 72in tool chest No one can give me the correct answer maybe you can
How can know if I have the series 2 72in maybe by the size of the drawers or the latches
Thanks for any information you can give
Can't decide wich looks better. Grey or Red?
Do all of the 26” or 42” US General Series 2 & 3 chests have the latch to open drawers? Only thing turning me off on them.
Put my hands on a series 3 yesterday, and the metal felt thinner than my series 2, and the drawers seemed to flex tons more than my series 2.
how is it holding up? i have the gen2
I have several in yellow, which I really like. But that grey is fantastic. What’s happening with the 26” roller cabinets? Is the Series 2 being discontinued, or is it going to stay around, with not Series 3 replacement? Same for the 44”.
The double long top drawers is nice
As a professiinal tech i only work out of a 40inch 6 drawer cart. And i have room still gor most everything i need
Any word on the 26" / 27" Cabinet /Chest?
I like the shallow drawers on the Series 2 and hope that doesn't change.
Thanks !
Any idea if harbor freight has plans anytime soon to come out with a table saw to rival the dewalt dwe7491rs?
I use to work for the phone company and met Customers in an area called Drew Park in Tampa.
I was dumbfounded at the price they paid for SnapOn tool boxes.
One Auto Repair Owner told Me that in order for Him to get Insurance they forced Him to buy those giant tool boxes because of the crime in His area.
His setup up was so huge and His locking system was so massive that a thief would not have enough time to break into the box and steal His tools.
He said they would need a tow truck to steal the whole tool box.
How can I find the scratch n dent page for the series 3?
I dont need a box that large i have a 6 drawer full bank already i need a smaller cart do you have any idea when there will be a series three cart or smaller box
Nice stuff. Thank you
Hey tool bear, I see all these nice mechanic tool boxes but I don't recall seeing any gang boxes being shown are gang boxes never on sale?
How long do you think it will be before some idiot slams the drawers or the hutch lid into that metal pole and causing a huge dent or two ruining a good box and hutch?
Lol! I just commented about the poles. ;D
maybe you can get a series 3 with a discount then lol
Can you say "clearance"?
I don’t like the locking drawers on a toolbox. On the tool carts it is a good feature but not on a box. The icon tension mechanism is perfect but my local stores don’t have an icon box so I can’t test it out. I will spend more money for that feature alone. When your working on something time is usually against you and the locks will annoy most people.
I totally agree. The tension defense on the icon box is also adjustable if you’ve ever look at a Matco box, I believe they are the same rail system
@@denoftools I like tension systems and all toolboxes need that system
cant wait for the 56" (or whatever its gonna be) to come out!
:D lol.
11:32 that looks like a power chain.
When/will they come out with the 56" series 3 box?
also take a look under the big top drawers, you'll see reinforcements on the ICON. I doubt the series 3 has it. nobody ever seems to mention this
When is the 56in series 3 coming out
I finally picked up a series 2 72in top and bottom for $1500.
Does anyone know when the 56” will come out?
Just like a lot of the new cars, BLACK Trim! I put out that much money for a new tool box, I want some CHROME handles. "Course, I'm old, but the black looks cheap to me. Any word from your contacts at HF about offering chrome trim packages?
They will be offering a conversion kit later this fall
Agreed. It looks cheap and you can't read the words on the badges... which make it look even cheaper.
Can someone explain where the “shine on” thing came from?
LOL, I'm the author of The Home Distiller's Workbook.
It's October and still no side cabinet
Really hope they make a 44" hutch
10:00 You're right, slides are easy to change out. If I can do it, anyone can do it: ua-cam.com/video/G7fyHuVSMSA/v-deo.html
Do they need a snapon box no but I know a lot of technians that have snapon box
🔥🔥 Badass 🤘🤘
I'm buying the Series 3 72" toolbox for $1349.99 tomorrow on sale.
Draw configs are better on the series 2. Also, like the Bear, I like lying my pliers flat and screw the power draw.
Do you know when or if the series 3 will launch in the smaller sizes?
Dates are at the end of the video
Strange how the icon is 3 inches deeper but can only get it in 4 different colors but 1000.00 more.
Ordered mine the 29th
Hit the floor about an hour before I placed the order
So, you're saying she prefers the US General?
Do we know when the other sizes will come out?
19:20
But, but.....when I can retire, I can resell the SnapOn box and finally pay off that 25yr loan on it. 😂
Granted the Series 2 72" box needed improvement, but the Series 2 44" box is great. Hopefully, HF won't discard a winner.
Hey bear is the Green different shade than the series 2 box?
I have not seen it in person but I would doubt it. Would not make it very "backward compatible".
@@denoftools thanks. i agree but it sure looks different on the website. thanks again for the reply.
Commenting on the video for the algorithm
18 33 are we still talking about tool boxes or tools ? Joking
I would like to see an icon box used in a shop for 10 years vs snappy
A friend of mine recently retired from a dealership. He had a huge Snap on toolbox. Granted it was old. Probably 30 years old. Anyway he sold it because he bought a smaller US General box for home. He told me the Snap on box was literally falling apart. My point is they don't last forever.
@@dangrimes5078 right but one will do 30 the other will do 5or 10
@@craigchiddo2794 I just don't think a toolbox should cost as much as a nice car.
@@dangrimes5078 no it shouldn't
@@craigchiddo2794 I have an old Craftsman toolbox. I bought it maybe 40 years ago. The way it is built is different from the new boxes.
Overall taking everything into consideration Series 3 for the win.
This perfect for nice garage we’re common sense is used
If ur in shop ur in rush icon take more abuse
Price represents it
The bottom 72 series 2 has 4 more drawers than the series 3. That sucks
Looks like you're in the Bozeman HF.
Yep
The poll in front of the box was a little frustrating. Im on the fence between this and the Icon.
18:30 that’s what she said
I like the way the series 2 looked better especially the verticle trim pieces that got deleted on the S3. I like the drawer latch better w the S3. The way the S2 don't open all the way is occasionally iritating.
Inflation sucks. I got my 72 series 2 for 900 bucks!!
IMO it feels cheaper than series 2
That’s what I want to see for myself in person, I own a 72” series 2 box so I can compare. My local harbor freight store didn’t have the series 3 box on Sunday, gonna check again next Sunday.
