He later learned the dude called in a strike on his own position and was getting the MoH for doing so. And yeah, the dude was seriously messed up mentally and needed a couple of solders to wash him down and get him dressed for the ceremony. Just a crazy story.

Note from Central Europe about the buildings: All of these buildings were made fairly at the same time in Central and Eastern Europe (1960's - 1970's) and include a basement which covers the whole building superficie and where the surface is divided equally into "separate lockers", one for each flat. Why is this important? Because each division is made of concrete walls, which creates a surprisingly strong and safe place, even when there are artillery on top. We live in a similar building here in PL.

I knew I guy many years ago who called in a strike on his own location. They were about to be overrun. He called it in and got a one minute warning and they ran for it. With the radio on his back he was just a little too slow but he did end up alive and in the hospital hence I later got to hear him tell the story.
My theory about the Russian troops in the building is that they didn't call for an artillery strike. The artillery more likely started when the command lost communication with the Russian forces in the building, and their commanders either didn't want them taken prisoners or assumed to be dead. If dead, they tried to bombard the Ukrainians, who overran the Russians.
For some reason, I thought you would get in trouble for calling an airstrike on your own position. Interesting to hear multiple Purple Hearts have been given out for this 😅
