    Our son and his wife taught English in Hanoi and lived in Tay Ho (they know you). We visited them several times (we stayed in the Oriental Palace near their apartment) for the last time just before they left to return to the UK in 2022. It was nice to see the place again in the video though when we visited the sky always seemed to be very grey and the humidity terrible. Your description is very accurate but the traffic was probably quieter in 2021 when you made this - it always seemed far worse to us! When we went back in 2022 after Covid it had returned to total chaos once again. But we remember it fondly.

      Oh I remember them, Tommy interviewed me for the job there☺️ I hope they are doing alright back in England!
      The shots of this video were quite lucky, those were really rare sunny days in Hanoi during the pandemic when most of the city was in a lockdown and the streets were really nice and empty. I was new in the city and it gave me an illusion that it would always be like that, but unfortunately no, most of the time the traffic is just a total mess!😂

      Glad that you liked it! I'm sure you're gonna like it in Tay Ho, just when you're moving in make sure there are no noisy bars/dilapidated houses nearby and then you should be just fine!😀 My personal favourite street is To Ngoc Van, it's the most well-maintained in Tay Ho and has got a ton of little shops and cafes/restaurants - super convenient!

    Nice ridings around the lake. I find that you didn't point out how much westernized is Tây Hồ compared to the other districts, show our 'food streets' like DTM 12 or To ngoc van that are not street foods lol! French bakeries, Italian pizzarie, Argentinian steak houses, Japanese ramen, Pakistani, Indian, Mexican, and wait a minute... Ukrainian! Maybe a different video hahaha! From Tây Hồ is also so easy to escape the city, in 10min you're already in the countryside! But the main thing, if you're a foreigner the majority of your friends will be living in Tây Hồ lol!

      Haha true! Well I might make another video about Tay Ho like 6-9 months later when I live here for a bit longer😂 Though by that time my opinion of Tay Ho might change quite a lot, who knows😅

    I like My apartment in EcoPark Hanoi it’s Clean, quiet and a free bus into and back from the old quarter of a short scooter ride. from most of the main areas.

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah I’ve been to Ecopark a few times, really nice and chilled area. Felt like totally another city. Absolutely different vibe and rhythm. Though for me probably would be a bit too quiet and peaceful and too far from all the party areas. I wouldn’t like to drive back to EcoPark after hanging out in Hoan Kime in the middle of the night😅 That would be way too dangerous 😬

      Tay Ho is a comfortable place to live. You can easily find anything you want in an easy walking distance. Though it’s Vietnam, some roads are in a really bad condition, there’s some rubbish here and there, overall a term of “noise pollution” doesn’t really exist here, people just don’t care about the noise. This can be a bit shocking sometimes. With places to stay just make sure there are not construction around. People here start working early and the noise can be pretty bad.

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton  5 місяців тому +1

      Hmmm that’s a tricky one. I know some people loved living Ba Dinh district, more of a government area, still quiet and peaceful. Some people would move to Cau Giay district with some high rise buildings. Defo not my choice.
      Other would live in Eco Park which is probably the closest possible to the concept of “tranquil residential area”. It’s a bit outside of Hanoi, but the vibes are totally different. I’ve been there a couple of times and it was pretty pleasant out there

      You’re welcome☺️ Tay Ho is a bit of a cliche choice but yeah if you want to have an easy access to good western food and English speaking environment then it’s your choice. Other districts is usually a hit or miss. I would probably stay away from high rise buildings. I’ve heard their lifts are very slow and get packed and it’s just difficult to get in our out😅

      @Ballin10X 5 місяців тому +1

      @@alrightanton thanks really appreciate the info! Im not much for high rises as I am from Europe, they freak me out :) For me its important to have trees in the streets and a park or 2 near by and to limit the honking noises and general noise polution.

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton  5 місяців тому +1

      Yeah then give Eco park a looks. It’s got a pretty calm traffic, lots of trees, low rise buildings. The only thing is that it’s a bit outside of Hanoi. But the ride to it is rather smooth and easy

    Hello, Anton. Thank you for the great video! Can you share some advice for newcomers on how to find cheap accommodation? As I've heard Vietnamese landlords ask for up to three rents in advance plus a deposit? Is there any cheaper way to settle for the first few months?

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton  2 роки тому

      Hey Lilly! Glad that you enjoyed the video☺️
      Regarding the accommodations... This question is quite flexible and negotiable a this moment . It’s a bit of a Vietnamese tradition to bargain everywhere possible. It would be normal to get a reduction of 40-50$ from the initial price.
      Besides the rent and advance pay is also negotiable. Like I had a friend who negotiated from 550$ to 500 for rent just by agreeing to pay once in two months, apparently landlords here like this option.
      Same thing with rent. I haven’t heard about anybody paying for 3 months in advance. That sounds like an overkill.
      I think when I moved in , I paid for only two months. It was considered as pay for the first month and “last” month of stay. Besides at that time I didn’t have money, and my landlord agreed to wait till I get my bank transfer.
      I would say that a rule is that to not take their words seriously and always try to negotiate. At this moment there is quite of an abundance of apartments as so many people have left Vietnam. Landlords may pretend that they are doing okay but in reality I think lots of apartments are empty and they are just losing money.

    I've taught English in a few countries, and I wanted to give Vietnam a chance. However, I'm a bit intimidated by motorbikes, and I'd rather not ride one. Maybe Vietnam isn't such a good choice for me.
    Thanks for posting this, though.

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton  2 роки тому +1

      Ah well. My personal view is that without a bike life here is a bit trickier. Public transport is underdeveloped. While taxis are cheap but not as cheap as in Malaysia. (Still cheaper than anywhere 3
      else in the world though).
      I have quite a few friends who have lived here for years and who don’t drive. They’d get taxis or motorbike taxis. In the end it is a bit pricier. But I’d say not massively, given that a bike needs to be maintained, they break all the time and yeah, quite a bit of hustle.
      Not talking about safety. Cars taxis are more expensive but then you may totally forget about getting injured while when you’re riding a bike it’s always a roulette whether you’re gonna be lucky today or not…
