    It did not wipe out the entire human race. That was something people used to believe in the 1990s, but not anymore. the Toba eruption had very little effect on human populations anywhere. F. J. Gathorne-Hardy and W. E. H. Harcourt-Smith, “The super-eruption of Toba, did it cause a human bottleneck?,” Journal of Human Evolution, vol. 45, no. 3, pp. 227-230, Sep. 2003, doi: 10.1016/S0047-2484(03)00105-2.

      Interesting. I did quite a bit of researching on it and most of the sources said that the effect of the eruption was truly devastating. And judging by the size of the volcano I am not surprised at all. But I’ll give a look at the journal you mentioned. Would be interesting to dig deeper into this.

    How did you bring your drone to thailand? Did they check it at the airport?

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton 6 днів тому

      Pretty easy. No one cared about the drone. Though I heard that to fly the drone legally here you need to get a license which is not too troublesome to acquire.

    Great video 👌I did a 2 night trek my early 20s in 2001 + I had a similar + amazing experience with 2 young guides. Glad to see the tourism hasn’t changed the simplicity + charm of the area or the beautiful trekking experience. I also visited Palau Weh on that trip and am surprised but grateful to see the lack of development on the island (after the tsunami). It has barely changed, like it was magically frozen in time ✨Looks like the devastation on the mainland in 2004 really kept the island protected. Have recently started traveling again with my 3 kids and I hope to take them to these places. Although my husband won’t enjoy that there is no alcohol available 😂. We are visiting Penang + koh Lipe next month. When i visited Palau Weh in 2001, I took a ferry from Penang to Medan then bus to Banda Aceh. Now you can just fly to B.Aceh for similar price! Amazing

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton 7 днів тому

      Yeah I think that’s the charm of it. Now actually you can get some alcohol in Pulau Weh, nothing special but might be something for your husband😂 But yeah, I loved that place. Been there twice and both times it did feel like an island of peace and quiet with very few rare tourists here and there. I really liked it. Maybe it’s not as convenient as Thailand and Malaysia but its wilderness and calm was very attractive to me!

      Haha yeah the weather in Vietnam can be pretty unpredictable. Plus seasons have a massive influence on it. My first stay in Nha Trang was pretty miserable too, it rained for 3 days straight. But I think that’s the reality of the tropical countries. You just need to accept that it will be unpredictable and sometimes pretty unpleasant.

    I flew closer to the buildings in Da Nang. Just cancel the warning. The airport is still far away. There is another rings around the airport which is more red. I wouldn't get close to that ring though. But along the coast you should be ok.

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton 21 день тому

      Oh lucky you, that’s such a great place for studying corals. I was staying in CK hostel, a private room was very decent, freshly furnished and really sunny. A bit noisy in the evenings though, this could get annoying if you’re staying long term. Overall though traveling there is pretty easy. I fly to Koh Samui and then took a ferry. There are couple of sweaty queues to go through here and there, can be a little be tiring and frustrating it once you are on the island all things fall into the right places. If I were to stay there for a longer term I’d probably stay slightly away from the Main Street, just to get some more peace and quiet

    Hi Anton :) I just wish to offer a Massive WARNING SERIOUSLY to drone flyers in Vietnam & suggest that all flying be done away from cities, beaches. I was in A Bang Beach last week - flew one along beach drone out over water for meditation videos - got away with it. On Tuesday November 26, 2024 I flew my drone as my partner want shots of her on A Bang Beach that’s all I did. Hardly anyone on the beach due to really bad weather etc., but I got BUSTED by Border Security 2 of them in green uniforms. They came back to the villa as they did not speak English the manager of the Villa did a little bit so she got the owner of the villa to attend. A third border security personnel arrive with brief case and started writing a statement in Vietnamese for me to sign and be fined. The owner of the Villa saved my bacon - how is it legally appropriate to get someone to sign a statement they cannot read. They took the serial number of the drone & showed me the fine it is between $10,000 - $20,000 USD. Fortunately, all I had to do was delete the footage from the controller. Leaving HCMC my backpack was checked due to having the drone batteries. I had to take all of them out of checked luggage and put them in carry on luggage. Weird no problems getting there to HCMC & also flying to Da Nang but way home different story. I too did some more research after watching your Vietnam video & next time I think to be SAFE I’d apply to the Ministry of Defence 14 days for each flight!!! May Zen be with you & others in the future - I was always dubious about flying them wanted to do Hai Van Pass but sort of glad it rain most days - hence could fly. Next time it will be out in the wilderness where no one is around. Please any future videos share with them my experience!! Perhaps the Zen was with me to not be fined & deported - as I love Vietnam been there twice and wish to keep going. How do we find the REAL take on amateur drone flying in Vietnam? Cheers Mark ~ “Be Gentle & Enjoy” 🙏💜🙏

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton Місяць тому

      Hi Mark, I’ve been living in Vietnam for 4 years and flying my drone here for the last 2. This video is my take on the situation. Sorry to hear about your case. I actually did fly my drone at that beach , check my Hoi An video, and didn’t experience any problems at all. I’ve been to most parts of Vietnam, flew my drone and rarely have I experienced any problems with it. Even more with the border control. No one EVER asked me to take out my drone and do anything about it. As I mention in the video the laws in Vietnam are rather inconsistent and unclear. My rule of thumb has been to avoid disturbing people, avoid dangerous situations and restricted areas. This rule helped me so far. The Ministry of Defense option is unrealistic and no one follows it. I would be happy to get a license to fly my drone in Vietnam but currently the Vietnamese authorities don’t offer this option.

      Ohhh a month! That’s quite some time. I think somewhere around Chulia street will be a perfect option. Easy to walk around, lots of food options, beautiful architecture, everything is in a close proximity.

      Hello Anton! Thank you! I will look up Chulia Street. Perhaps a month is too much? I will be in Asia for 2 months and like slow travel. Maybe 1 month in Penang is too long?

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton Місяць тому

      Well a month would be for a very slow holiday there. Penang is quite small. Practically you can cover most of the interesting place within 3-4 days. Though if you like slow holidays Penang could be a nice place to go. Lovely people, really nice food, just walk around and explore. I’ve been to Penang I think over 8 times now and yet still whenever I come back I just can’t get enough of walking around those streets. If I were you I’d probably book 2 weeks and then see how it goes. Because there are a few nice places around to visit. Like you could go to Langkawi and enjoy some sunny beaches. Or head to Cameron Highlands and embrace some fresh cool air. If I had a month in my disposal I’d probably spend a week in Penang, a week in Langkawi, then head back and stop by in Ipoh for a couple of days and then head to Cameron Highlands. Commuting in Malaysia is very easy, their systems are very organized so booking a bus would be pretty simple

      Nah, not really. It’s far from big administrative centres , airports, military bases etc. I’ve seen loads of people flying their drones right in the middle of the town. I would be careful as usual but I didn’t really see anyone restricting the drone flying there…

      The main one is okay but yeah, not super spectacular for swimming and all that. There are a lot better beach around but further out of the island. I think the main advantage of the main beach is that it’s right next to the bars and cafes so it’s nice to just sit, chill , enjoy the sunset and all that. While other beach’s are a bit more about swimming and free space

      @@alrightanton Yeah , pitty I didn't check the other beaches. But the vibe of the island is weird and there has been reported problem, so unlikely to come back. After our snorkeling excursion, the instructor invited us to smoke weed (it was still when it was illegal) at his home for a party, and the vibe was kind of weird. He was telling us all the foreigners stories that got caught and get in jail or stuff like that while we were smoking, a bit to intimidate us maybe. Kind of creepy and I wanted to get my ass out of the party assap, even more so when weirdos started to come in and tell similar weird stories etc... Also the vibe of the beach party is a bit edgy and not necessarily reassuring. Ko phan gam is less "intimate" and "mysterious" and the beaches and roads are chill and beautiful

      @alrightanton 2 місяці тому

      Yeah that doesn’t sound too nice. Shame, I genuinely had a great time there and didn’t really experience that kind of behavior there. To be honest I’d normally stay away from random people offering drugs. You might be lucky and it’s may end well. But everyone knows that high tourists are an easy target and I’d never let me guard down when I travelling. I think no matter where you go there’s always gonna be someone who would want to use you inattentive state to get something from you

    You can actually see whale sharks in many parts of the Phils., there is one in Batangas which is what you would have preferred to go to (hire a small boat and dive to see the sharks, no feeding, etc). Whale Sharks is seen frequently in Oslob and nearby coast which was a problem before because they ruin fishing nets so fishermen back then would kill them. To avoid this, they came up with a solution of feeding the sharks, attracting tourists and giving jobs to local fishermen (boatmen). I know this not a 100 percent good solution but somehow it is a Win-win for them. I live in another island and we see Whale Sharks, Whales and Dolphins sometimes. So the Whale Shark most likely doesnt just stay in Oslob all day.

    • @alrightanton

      Yeah I suppose it makes sense… Some of my friends did mention that all this is done not from the rich life, and people need to make for living somehow…

    This looks like so much fun compared to Oslob's whale shark swimming from your last video, except for the diving incident, of course. Did you check your oxygen tank carefully before you dove? The tanks provided should be more than enough for the depth and duration of these touristic dives, but you should always test the tanks before you dive. Glad you communicated it and the guides were responsive, though.

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton 2 місяці тому

      It was super fun! But yeah. The diving incident was quite unpleasant. I think it was not very well organized. The briefing was very poor. They didn’t really explain us much about the route. Then they took us too deep, almost 30 metres and then told us to swim in a small cave for some weird reason, there was not much to see. And then yeah I think this whole thing was quite a bit of stress for me so that I just breathed too fast. I am generally a rather fast breather and go up first but then it was a bit over the top!

      I stayed in CK hostel, in a private room. It was lovely. The room was nice and spacious. It was clean and the spot is right in the middle of everything. It gets a bit noisy at night, but I think for this you’d need to stay in some resorts , away from the busy streets. maps.app.goo.gl/VqGDHSikPhqCArfw9?g_st=ic

      Mmmm it wouldn’t be a massive problem… Just inconvenient😅 There are some taxi services on the island, like motorbike taxis and all that. The main town is rather small so you’ll easily walk around it. It’s more about other beaches, if you wanna go somewhere else it’s either gonna be a quite long and sweaty walk or you’ll need to get a taxi. It is all doable just not as convenient when you’ve got your own wheels😅

    I went there in 2003. It was paradise. I stayed at two beaches that at the tie were called Sunset and Moondance. Perhaps renamed now as I can't find them online. Curious whether it's now Been developed and is Tanote Bay. Basically if you are standing on chalok ban kao beach and facing out to see you would turn right and walk around the headland and there it was. Is this Tanote bay, or perhaps its still a secret - but I doubt it!

    • @alrightanton
      @alrightanton 3 місяці тому

      Oh 2003, it must've been a quite different place back then! But not too much. It has clearly grown and developed but I wouldn't say it over commercialised to the extent of being unattractive for adventurous travellers. I suppose its distance and size kinda helps it, you can'ts plant an airport there and it doesn't seem to have that much of space for a massive infrastructure to supporort some grand resort. There is a hope that it might stay like this for some time!
