Dear Square Enix, I have enjoyed your games, know that you carry the torch after the merger of Square Soft and Enix. Final Fantasy 1-9, Einhander, the Mana series, Paladin's Quest (Enix), the Front Mission games, so many to list that I love. You are the one of the number one companies I go to when it comes to story driven titles. But, the situation with this Harrasment Policy is ambigious and open to inneuendo. It can force your very customers into a defensive route, many that would never want to buy your products because they can likely be removed from any board that you deem as "Unsafe." There is no room to critique. There is no room to complain. It reduces your customers into one that will either pay for your product or not at all. There would be no room to figure out why, your customer base shrinks day by day, while the games never get fixed or adjusted. it leads to one of the most destructive concepts that affects companies, Toxic Positivity. Want to see an example of Toxic Positivity? Look at Ubisoft. Each day, the developers continued to make a product. Some know the game is flawed, but to criticize it, is one that can get you fired. The financiers see that charging customers +$100 for a game was too expensive, but they can't say anything. The consumers complain, but are silenced, harrased, or shoved out of the boards because the game is supposed to be perfect. Review boards give high praise as the game they play for 30 minutes is nothing more than a broken mess. Stockholders are fed lies, thinking that something they invest will result in reward only to watch their shares reduced to toilet paper. Eventually, Ubisoft can't figure out why their company faces bankruptcy as the very thing, the most important thing is lost: their consumers. Always remember that the customer is always right. A complaining customer is one that has some vested interest in your product. They can still buy what you make, but the worst type of customer is one that walks by and never buys your product. The customer is the foundation for buisness.
"Always remember that the customer is always right." - in matters of taste, yeah. not in actual harassment. but yeah, their policy includes weird stuff like "denial of personality"(??) and "persistent inquiries". it's stupid.
You used a whole lot of words to say “piss off.” In all seriousness, the people that made of the majority of their greatest games are long gone. People make great games, not a logo. I completely agree with your well written assessment.
"customer is always right" is not the moral of this story. as someone who worked in retail, this moto is garbage. what you should've used is "take criticism".
I think you missed the "Suing Customer->Bankruptcy" portion. To be fair, there can be a number of steps between, but we all know where this is going from historical examples aplenty.

The problem with Square Enix and any other game studios is that, they are not just losing gamers, they just losing customers, and mostly RESPECT from us gamers.
They've been losing my respect for years now due to their massive disappointments disguised as video games (FF7 Rebirth might be the worse modern JRPG I've ever played)
Naughty Dog, Rocksteady, Square Enix, how many more companies that I loved will be corrupted by the vocal minority that claims to be the "modern audience"? 😢
If they like to take western principles like the woke and DEI maybe they should learn that freedom of expression is also one of them. Personally hearing from a corporation "you can't criticize us" i think is a joke. I was gonna buy Rebirth but no more, i am black listing all their games and am still gonna criticize them. What are they gonna do. Ban me from games i don't play?
I really like his approach here. He's not being snarky and witty with his opinion. Instead, he dresses up properly and talks formally and respectfully addressing his concerns and even stating this is directed to Squenix. This is a video that executives would not be ashamed to watch and consider unlike so many opinionated pieces making a show of how "stupid" their decisions are and mocking them. And this is all very much on brand because I don't remember him on any video getting unhinged for whatever reason. Good show, ol' chap.
It's obvious to everyone that this policy's sole purpose is to allow Square-Enix to silence people who are not going to like their upcoming DEI changes in games. They want to release games like forespoken and silence reviewers and online talk about how bad the game is under this policy.
again I really want them to start suing youtubers because they will have no legal ground will spend a bunch of money and become fiercely hated, probably more than ubisoft
The way harassment works in Japan is: ",It doesn't matter whether what you say is true or false, if we deem what you say negatively impacting our reputation, then we will treat your criticisms as harassments" No seriously, there is no concept of fair and balanced criticism over there. You either praise stuff over there or you grab a mask, a voice modulator and a burner account and start criticising there. Japan has no concept of free speech
If they want to approach the Western market, than they will have to make concessions to appeal to our way of life. The West is a punitive-guilt culture, not a punitive-shame culture like those in the East. If their marketing department does not understand the fundamental difference between those two terms and yet still wishes to do business internationally, they are too incompetent for their positions and must be replaced.
Especially your last words nail it best: There is no point in arguing or giving more feedback if you feel that it is not being valued and/or being taken seriously. Once that threshhold is reached, we as gamers literally have just one option: Not buy the product. It is a sad step to take and it becomes even sadder if good people loose their jobs should a product be a financial flop...but what other option is there?
What? Weren't they satisfied with all the media groups they have that downvote, poof comments and say repeatedly they "loved their (the) games" and have "thousands of hours" put into them without having ever touched them once? While discrediting voices saying they are "purists"? Oh Square-Enix, never change. Just make better quality games.
Thank you for mentioning that these policies actually harm groups they're trying to protect. I've been so tired of people scapegoating on "Being inclusive" or "woke" without actually breaking down why something is bad. I hope somebody at Square Enix sees this. Great video.

Your laughing, but expect the Pickerton Detective Agency to arrive at your door asking why your discriminating against their client while holding firearms in their hands.
It's kinda mind boggling how companies went from at least trying to make quality products and being proud of their products, to today were it's all about how much they can scam and/or be offensive to the customers. It's a weird world we live.. Also what happened to the saying --> ''the customer is always right''🤣
".....in matters of taste." People forget that part of the quote. It's supposed to be a counter to the whole "buyer beware" mentality that was around when the quote first came to be (and has definitely creeped back up now), not a substitute for a customer's common sense. Suing for criticism has a lot of repulsive tastes to it though - such as the fact that it shows a lack of confidence in the product. People can tell when something just isn't ready to sell. It actually doesn't boggle my mind how companies got away from making quality products. Let me sum it up this way: they stopped thinking about total money and put all focus on the here and now.

@ Not only is it unprofessional, but it's also emotionally and mentally immature. If you made a song. How would you know how your music after can be improved if all you want is praise? You wouldn't be able to tell if the hook was off or the tempo was quite right. Maybe the song didn't feel as impactful as your song before that one. You wouldn't know because all those people with genuine critiques are being put in with people simply saying, "This song sucks," and considering it harmful. One major problem with their policy is that it allows them to do the things in it to others and if they get any push back, they can claim foul and go after that person. Especially the comment or post on the internet, like what does that even mean? Where is the line drawn between telling Dev's to game end themselves and just saying you think FF14 is utterly shocking at the moment. I am no attorney, but my firm belief in the law of unintended consequences tells me that this is a can of litigation worms that squeenix may very well come to bitterly regret opening. Its all fun and games until the discovery process starts.
Square Enix is not a person. You can't harass them any more than you could harass a rock. Individuals that post their opinions in public spaces are opening themselves up to criticism just like everyone else. Anyone that sells a product to the public are open to criticism from their customers, that's what keeps them honest. Without that transparency we can only assume dishonesty.
Small correction you should make. Criminal proceedings is not correct. > Civil matters are not criminal matters, they are civil matters. A corporation may come after you with civil proceedings. Losing a civil suit does not add to a criminal record nor will it have jail or prison time. The other thing is I don't know what sqenix thinks they can do with this. Speech and expression is a constitutionally protected freedom in a lot of countries they sell games in (to varying degrees) and in almost every 'case' they could ever have, they will never actually have a case.
The Squaresoft we knew and loved has died a long time ago and Square enix has been turning to crap more and more over the last couple of years. As far as I’m concerned I’m quite happy never spending another cent with them.

This was 100% in response to them getting caught working with SBI. Problem with these companies is they eventually get so big, they start thinking they don't need their customers, and start viewing them with contempt. Sounds like this leaves the door open for suing content creators for just giving a bad review. That's very speech chilling. Guess I won't be buying their games again.
God forbid a company treats its customers with respect. I have never understood this mindset they have where they think their customers are stupid sheep who will buy anything they put out regardless of quality.
I wouldn't worry about it. If anything it's a sign of hilarious things to come. If Square indeed goes after someone who said "Your game is trash." on Reddit, it will blow up in their face so hard there won't be anything left to laugh at.

This is the direction we're moving in -- corporations want to be legally above consumer criticism.
They want to be feudal lords that rule over the peasants, in my opinion. 'Be quiet and consume what we tell you to, or else'. That or a legal mafia.
So companies want a cyberpunk dystopia, I mean, I should be shocked, but I'm not shocked at all, greedy corpos will do anything to get their benjamins
@@RozeVermillion The dangerous ones are a legal mafia at this point. Banking and investment firms like BR being the biggest mafias of them all.
Square Enix: Customers' feedback is essential.......for us to sue them.
Dear Square Enix,
I have enjoyed your games, know that you carry the torch after the merger of Square Soft and Enix.
Hire DEI consultant -> make their own DEI department -> Toxic Positivity -> Suing Customer
Weird flow chart. I wonder why so many companies are following that.
I think you missed the "Suing Customer->Bankruptcy" portion. To be fair, there can be a number of steps between, but we all know where this is going from historical examples aplenty.

The unfortunate thing is that, because of JP defamation law, the execs probably *do* consider criticism harassment

They really are digging their own grave.
This is indeed a bad move from them.
The way harassment works in Japan is: ",It doesn't matter whether what you say is true or false, if we deem what you say negatively impacting our reputation, then we will treat your criticisms as harassments"
No seriously, there is no concept of fair and balanced criticism over there.

I don't. SquareEnix was great for a good while. It was a step in the right direction. The problem lies in the more recent years.
I miss the times when the industry was full of passionate developers instead of (white) men-hating hobby-destroyers.

Suing for criticism has a lot of repulsive tastes to it though - such as the fact that it shows a lack of confidence in the product. People can tell when something just isn't ready to sell.
