Hello Hoon! Thank you for those videos. As a former barista, I have two tips for you. I suggest that you froth your milk BEFORE you make your espresso shot. That way, the coffee won't have time to become bitter. Also, for your Americano, I suggest that you pour the hot water in your glass THEN pour the espresso shot over your hot water. That way, your the espresso is going to mix with the hot water and you will have a thick crema on top. Keep it up!
Thank you so much for the tip. You won’t believe how much it improves my coffee. So I purchased a new Breville Barista for a week, and I was desperate to make a latte I could drink, but by following some tips from this video and your fantastic advice, finally, it worked!! I’m super happy! Thank you so much 😊🙌
You are so right. I am overwhelmed & feel I need to watch more videos before even attempting to make my 1st cup of coffee with my Breville machine. Thank you for this video. I learnt from it.
Wow! Just purchased my Breville Barista Express and am pretty intimidated with all the UA-cam vids and when the pros flop, OMG! Love your straightforward presentations, and will probably watch them multiple times to “get it right”! Cheers😊
Got mine on special yesterday and "intimidated" is precisely my present state of mind. The manual totally scared the cr@p out of me and I haven't even plugged it in yet. It certainly is a beautiful table top ornament though.
Hi Just got this machine two days ago ,I am so glad I found you .Your videos are helping me so much ! It is not an easy machine !!! Thanks keep up the good work we need you !!
First time..thank you for your video. Success first up. Everyone had told me I would probably go through a kilo of beans and take around2 weeks to get it right. Nope, followed Hoons instructions and had my first aaaaaaahhhhhhdelicioso😋😋😋
Hoon - Thank you so much for this video. My husband bought this machine for me for Christmas and I have been beating my head on the wall for why I cannot get the pressure into the espresso range. Switching filter baskets today and will try again. Appreciate you! Have a wonderful 2020. I'm definitely subscribing now. You and this machine are going to make my 2020 so much brighter.
I just got mine today and wasted a whole bag of beans failing at making coffee. Thanks to your video I now know about the other basket and will try that tomorrow morning. I was ready to return if and give up. Maybe there’s still hope I’ll get it right.
I prefer adding the shot to hot water when making an Americano as adding the hot water to the shot spoils the overall look to the crema top appearance. Just my personal preference.
Hi Hoon, really like your video and how you show all the features of the BES870. Just a tip for when you make Americano, put the hot water in the cup first and then pull your shot/s on top. When you do it in the reverse order, you'll notice that you dilute the crema and it basically disappears.
I love coffee & your videos are great, keep up the good work. I’ve ordered barista express online & should arrive very soon so I need all the tips/tricks i can get. Thanks & take care 😊
Hi Hoon. Thank you so much for your video! I just purchased this machine today and my first cup was terrible after following the (very vague) instructions in the book. Your video really helped me out, thank you.
I had no idea about the baskets. I wasted a lot of beans, and no matter what I was doing - changing grind and weight - the pressure gauge would not go up. I'm going to try change baskets today.
Found this channel whilst searching for data on the barista pro I just bought today I love this guy it’s like I’m watching just a normal guy explains facts , so much better than some fake influencer loser
I am very happy having found your channel on UA-cam. I love the Barista Express but there are still many things which I did not know yet. Thus a big „Thank you“ for all your valuable hints which already have given me many ideas how to optimize the results. Many greetings from Germany. 👋🏻
Great video. I just recently bought the same machine but I’m having issues with getting the grind settings correct. Using the double filter basket I’m consistently getting under extraction, with little or no movement of the pressure gauge. What settings are you using the side and upper burr ? I had to dial the internal upper burr to 4 (down from 6) and still can’t get a correct pour.
Hi Hoon ! I bought these machine last week I saw your video and I had a good coffee and the 2 nd day the water didn’t run My pressure does nt work , I followed your steps, what did I wrong?
really enjoyed this video, simple but not boring and most importantly very informative. Cant wait to get mine and use it for the first time, this video has definitely got me excited.
hello, im going to be buying a Breville Barista Express BES870 but I am wondering what is the difference between the Breville Barista Express BES870, and the regular Breville Barista Express?
Hoon, love the video. I will buy the machine today. I am looking for a machine to Practice my arte latte and also a tip, In my barista class they recommended to pour the hot water before the expresso when making an americano Just sharing. Thank you for sharing this amazing video.
Following you from a few days ever since i got my breville, I’ve seen in one of your video your grinder goes automatically for the amount you set if you click on it once..i know mine has that function but when i do click nothing happen..i have to hold it every time.. do you have any video on how to work that ?? Thanks !
Thank you! I plan to buy this kind of espresso machine after Metro Manila lockdown. Right now I'm trying to learn more of this machine and some tips. Thanks to this video! I already subscribed to your page. Hoping for more videos!
Thank you for such a quick reply. So, just to reiterate and make sure that I stop throwing away coffee. You measure 18g of coffee and put them into the bean Hopper. Then you place the grind size between a 3 and 4. Ok, what about the grind amount option that is next to the filter size?
Thank you! Very informative! I bought my machine last week and have never made coffee before in my life so this was very helpful What bean roast do you recommend for more flavour ? I am trying to make a cappuccino and I bought medium roast but i barely get any coffee flavour from it... my coffee tastes like milk with a hint of coffee, even when I do a double shot. I’ve got the setting correct so that it falls in the espresso range so I’m not sure what else I am doing wrong. Any suggestions?

Keep the amount 18 gram and grind your beans finer this creates more resistance, when your pour is 36 grams within 25 to 30 seconds you made a good espresso shot.
Hey Hoon, really enjoying your videos. Had machine for about a week, experimenting with a bag of not-great coffee. (Costco House blend). I am pretty close to getting decent results in terms of input, timing and yield, but the coffee still tastes a bit bitter / burned. I am thinking beans have something to do with it, but I'll keep improving my grinding / tamping / consistency with this bag. Wanted to ask you a dosing related question. After I tamp and insert-remove portafilter I don't see any imprints on my puck, but after I extract and remove the portafilter there's grounds left on the grouphead screen. I imagine that as coffee expands during infusion it hits the portafilter and sticks to it. Is that a problem? Should I put less coffee? Been trying 17.5 and 18g doses.
I have a question, can I leave the coffee beans in the grinder? I just fill the grinder with plenty of beans and leave them, or do I have to weigh out the proper amount of beans everytime I make coffee?
I have been trying all day to get the perfect esspresso. I'm finding I keep getting a bitter taste and after awhile, I had been getting low pressure with the machine. I've tried different beans and grind sizes. Just not quite getting exactly what I'm hoping for. Any ideas or tips to help get a nice espresso shot I can enjoy? (I'm a beginner using this breville for about a week or so.)
Hi Hoon~ i have been using the barista express a little over a month. I practiced with Lavazza beans per your recommendation. Then i switched to local roaster beans (light/medium roast). Recently, i noticed more than normal coffee grinds on the shower screen. So i rechecked the level with breville precision blade and it was fine. However, once i lock then unlock the prepared PF, the well polished dry puck was disturbed (the top layer stuck on the shower screen. I tried adjusting dose from 18g down to 16g and still happening. But not when I used lavazza bean with same grind setting. Please advise.
I have the same machine but you are making it way more complicated than it already is .... 😜 I like setting it up for the perfect extraction too but the issue is that the moment you change the beans or the water or even tamping pressure by just a little bit, the extraction goes haywire.
Hi Hoon! I’ve had my unit for a few weeks and still learning a lot about it. Question is about the shot time for a single wall double shot. I have used 3 different beans (1 is definitely freshly roasted) and have been getting to the espresso range for some of my shots, but regardless if it is under pressure or in the espresso range, my shot time can’t seem to go past 20 seconds. It usually lingers around 18-20 seconds. I’ve read that shot time should be between 20-30 seconds. What could be the problem? Thanks!
Hello Hoon! Thank you for those videos.
As a former barista, I have two tips for you. I suggest that you froth your milk BEFORE you make your espresso shot. That way, the coffee won't have time to become bitter.

And you can have the portafilter hot and water in the cup in one step by just making a shot with no coffee in portafilter.

Thanks!
Please check out my other videos. "How to program" or "Manual mode".

You know the milk frother is serious when it kicks into “Seven nation army”
I use lavazza beans and the only way to get a decent extraction is to put the grind size to 2. THIS seems super fine. Anyone else have the same issue?
