The Korg MS-20 Mini Part 9- The External Signal Processor

- Here is a very basic portrayal of the sound and functionality of the ESP on the Korg MS-20 Mini. This video does not delve into the depths of application of this function, as the possibilities are quite endless. Processing external audio allows an incredible amount of control and/or sound manipulation. I know you're going to say "why didn't you do THIS?" And it's true, I should have done that. But I wanted to give a quick overview!
And that is one of the big reasons I'm buying this. It's the stuff you would never think of with plug-ins, especially when it goes a bit off every now and then.
Hello !
Thank you for this explanation. This little synth is a very powerful tool to inspire and boost creativity, for a descent price.
I completely agree with yer sentiments pertaining to the MS-20's ESP section! Fantastic job (as usual), Marc. Yer videos are the bee's knees.
Thanks so much 4 the upload--winter is looking a lot warmer already :)
Fantastic demo as always. Thanks Marc!
wow, this really helps me wrap my head around the ESP and how it works. thanks so much.. i have purchased one cool liitle monosynth!
Love the singing part
+lea seaen You're too kind.
I love running things through the filter gives it a really lofi sound
Love these videos!
I'm constantly checking my email to see if Saved By Technology has mine yet. A couple of weeks ago, someone in Austria mentioned an Apr 4th ship date for his. Hopefully Canada isn't far behind.
Marc, first time caller, long time listener... I have a MS-20 classic with the more aggressive filters and run my Ensoniq ASR-X pro through it. I like the way ensoniq samplers sound anyway, but with the MS-20 filters in action...well it's that much better! Thanks for your very informative viddies!
I'd imagine this would actually be a fantastic addition to any modular system, provided you have a way of converting the Hz/V and S-trig to V/Oct and V-trig. Last I heard Monorocket was working on such a module.
that's amazing, thanks for sharing!
Nice!! Knew you'd be getting one. I have #1 coming to Saved by Technology. :-) I emailed them right away when I heard the NAMM announcement. After the long MiniBrute wait, I didn't want a repeat.
I sure hope so! I had a false alarm email from SBT on Friday, they were confirming my Volca series pre-order.
this is how i always imagined that the ESP worked but i was like "Noooo...this is too good to be true there is not way that it actually converts PITCH to CV" but now you make this video and my dreams have come true. i really wanted to start building a modular but this keeps distracting me.
ill have to look into that. thanks
Is it possible to use the keys to control the pitch of your voice? Been wondering if there are any ways to use it like a vocoder
Behringer K2 owner here. I make vids and this is most helpful. Thanks!
Nice 1 Marc.
i am gonna buy one for my acid sounds, the ultra agressive filter screaming, is probably imo the absolut best thing ican can have for this type of sound, and yea, much better than any roland synth every done.... but still, i wonder what happend, when i send the signal from my 303 through the ms20 mini. very excitet about this experiment. i love the synth, it`s amazing what i can get with 800 bucks
It chooses notes in harmony because your note is a combination of harmonics.
Marc, it's great that there is someone out there with the vocal chops to replace Whitney. Joking aside, thanks for yet another informative video. I know you have pretty much covered the works now but will you do one more just to do with patch panel? Thanks again.
My brain melted trying to comprehend that.
Please tell me you can use this to make the classic voice box sound. That would be so awesome! Maybe patch the external sound (being voice) through an oscillator? Not sure if that is possible but it would be so sweet.
There are several more which feature use of the patch panel!
This is so cool.
I'm trying to do the same thing with my Shure sm57 Dynamic Mic - going from mic 3-pin to a female mic 3-pin converting to 1/8" male. I can't seem to get the mic to register (no peak/trigger light) even with the signal level all the way up and while yelling.
What is your mic setup and do you use any kind of amplification on your voice before going into the MS-20? Thanks!
I got my SM-57 to work by connecting via it's regular lo-impedance XLR mic cable to Shure A85F Line Matching Transformer (Low Z Female XLR to High Z 1/4-Inch phone plug) then from transformer 1/4" phone plug via 1/4" female adapter cable to 1/8" TS into the external input--- works great! Just build in some strain-relief so the poor little barbie doll input jack doesn't get destroyed! :) Thanks for another great MS-20 joint Marc, as always you are the man! 👍👍
PS: I'm mostly a drummer, so I'm using this MS-20 feature to sing deep bass-lines while I rock out on the tubs, it's totally rad & shakes the whole house, no lie!!
Imagine feeding a Theremin into it 🤯
you could also just get a light sensor thing which puts out hz/oct and controll the pitch via that.
How to connect microphone to the ESP?
Just connect microphone directly to ESP signal in? Or should i connect microphone to interface then to the ESP signal in? Great video!
Ha ha ha. I believe the aesthetic of this house has been described as "distressed." I love how it has become such a topic of conversation!
Okay, now that I have that lie out of the way... I'm living in a condemned house on the edge of town. I have to sleep on top of my synthesizers so that the other hobos don't burn them for fires. I heat myself with Sterno.
Whats Next? is there anything left? can't wait for mine to come through!
Thank you!
does the `pitch recognizing` have any `delay` ...i mean can you hear the difference later than you actually change the pitch?
So the old videos with all that black fabric was a tent! Too bad they changed Sterno. Otherwise you could drink it.
I'd consider it a compliment that people are discussing and joking about the aesthetic... it means there's no need to criticize the content. Solid videos Marc.
***** Is there a standalone version of the ESP? perhaps one that affects midi?
Well, you could have the amplitude of your voice control the filter cutoff while you play your guitar into the signal in. Not the same, but still cool. You can actually get a halfway decent sound similar to what you are talking about with a microkorg though :).
The bass sound in the beggining is quite something
7,8,10 ... wtf? ;-) great series by the way!!
Can you do the same with the Kobol Expander?
Are all sounds through the esp still monophonic? Can you play chords?
You could conceivably input a signal that comes from a polyphonic source and play chords, but you're going to give the pitch tracking functionality apoplexy. :D
1.50 sounds like sooty. That's how they did it
Is this how the Korg demo guy was controlling the MS-20 Mini from the Kaos Pad thing?
this is the fucking coolest thing ive ever seen, whats the microphone you used?
I actually can't remember... that was a long time ago!
@@automaticgainsay props to still reading the comments though! i assume its just any 3.5mm output microphone?
Yes.
Any sign of your MS-20 Mini yet? I'm hoping for an email today. :-)
Harvest man english tear, it will be released when the ms-20 mini is released, it will be a eurorack module, basically why im buying this thing, to integrate into my system
Does anyone know how well this will track with a guitar or bass!?
I know this is an older video.. but what would happen if I plugged my Volca Bass into the MS-20 Mini ESP?
boom
COMMENT IL ET ALIMENTE LE MS20 EN USB OU MIDI OU PRISE COMMENT PAR OU LE SONS SORT .
Nice work. If you guys want to take the MS-20 to the next level, check out a user called Newueel, I think hee is the most creative user on UA-cam (present company excepted of course! ;-).
How do you do this with the VST version?
I'm pretty convinced that you broke into some old house and filmed all of this. To expand on this theory I've hypothesized that you've been squatting somewhere and the reason for your break in filming is the house has been sold for rehab and you're now forced to live like a hobo... Hope you have a cot in the Moog archives.
Hahaha, great.
am i the only one that is going to attempt a cover of this intro song when i get my mini?
/watch?v=6Gh6eMZfgFY
Seems to work alright.
Sounds like skrillex
😂😂😂😂
0:53 False as the Roland SH-09, The Yamaha CS-10 or again the Korg Microkorg has an external input...
First of all, before you insist that something I said was "false," you have to recognize that I did say there may be other examples. A statement is only false if it is authoritative and lacks the sort of proviso I included.
Also, while we're at it, it's plain that you weren't paying attention, and don't know what the ESP does. It's not just an external input. Nearly every vintage synth has those. Very rarely, and I can't think of any examples, are they PITCH FOLLOWERS. That's the main point. Tons of synths had envelope followers. The ESP combines pitch following, envelope following, and general input.
In addition to that, the CS-10 did not have a pitch follower, and the MicroKorg is not "vintage," and was especially not vintage seven years ago.
P.S. Check out my CS-15 and SH-09 videos.
Shit! Why have I bought it???
