Well, I'm a guy who performs live with both a Minimoog AND an ARP 2600. And I don't need presets. So, this can mean one of two things: 1. I'm some sort of magical guy who can do anything, or 2. You don't need presets. If you study synthesis on one synthesizer and come to be able to know what each change will do, you will know what to do to make a sound you envision. And it's simply not that hard with analog synths.
That door definitely needs to be repainted... More seriously, as usual Marc, with this series you've provided a very in depth look at a classic, bound to be classic again, synth. Thanks !
For anyone interested in knowing, the ring modulation defaults both oscillators to square waves. That is to say the waveform select of oscillator 1 has no effect on the ring modulation of oscillator 2. If you turn up oscillator 1 in the mixer though, it will output whatever waveform you selected. But again, even if oscillator 1 is outputting a saw to the mixer it's still using a square wave to ring modulate a square wave in oscillator 2. The pulse width of oscillator 1 will actually fade in the amplitude of oscillator 2 so if you have an inaudible pulse width, oscillator two will be at full volume. With a 50:50 duty cycle on osc 1 you have true ring modulation without the dry output of oscillator 2. IF the dry output of oscillator 2 were audible that would be called AM instead of Ring and the 20 doesn't do AM by default (might be able to patch it in). Didn't know that a modulator patched into osc2 pitch will disable it's keytracking. I'll have to test that out.
@@coolguy2783 wow I wrote that four years ago, crazy. Looking back at that comment I realize intuitively that yes, patching into osc 2 pitch will of course disable keytracking. Osc 2 in fact doesn’t have it’s own pitch mod input independent of osc 1… but instead has a cv input FOR things like keytracking. So while you can get pitch mod type effects that way it’s not the same as patching into pitch on the upper left of the panel. The reason the MS-20 is using two square waves for it’s “ring mod” is because it’s actually an XOR gate which can mimic the math of ring mod only when using squares. Not sure what I was talking about with the pulse width of osc1 increasing the volume of oscillator 2 (in ring mod mode). I doubt that’s true. It is still true though that if you effectively make the osc 1 square wave disappear with a narrow width that you’d only be hearing oscillator 2… which would only be a square wave. Not that exciting.
Great video series as usual! I'm deep into learning about synthesis and you're videos almost always capture exactly what I need in term of learning and humor. Thanks again friend!

As far as youtube, and computer speakers, audio quality goes, this thing sound darn good to me. Thanks as always for the good jo ... now I'm really curious to hear those filters ...
Hey man, as an owner of a Minibrute, I do like the phat sounds you can make from it and the multiple connectivity (USB, MIDI, CV) and aftertouch is great to have as well. That said, the relatively cheap access to an MS-20 with its patching and close approximation to the original is a thoroughly good thing for musicians
Please let me know where all your extra time has come from. You've made so many videos over the last few months that I suspect some crafty temporal engineering or wildly successful sleep deprivation experiment. I'm really looking forward to the filter video, too. Keep them coming. Lastly, thanks for being one of the few synth demo guys to mix their sound properly (rather than relying on a horrible camera mic). It's appreciated.
Modular manufacturers make extremely pitch accurate oscillators these days, that have not a single digital component in them. So I can assume Korg can do that aswell. My Analogue Systems RS-95 VCO's have +/-0.3% pitch accuracy across all octaves.
I think you're going to be able to find an MS-20 Mini a lot easier and more cheaply than a Juno-60. The Juno-60 is vastly less complicated, and much more linear in appearance... so it'd probably be an easier first synth. But learning the MS-20 Mini would teach you a lot more about synthesis. Despite being monophonic.
Roland Juno-106. Well, I want to say the MiniBrute because it might be easier for a beginner to stick with sliders instead of patching... but at the same time, it's a great way to get a great educational foundation with CV patching!
Hi Marc Doty I love your videos just two quick questions first question what was your first analog synth? and second out of the korg ms20 mini or Arturia mini brute which one would you recommend for beginner first synthesiser?
Hey Marc, I've been using some MIDI synth sounds with my band for a while, but I want to switch to analog. I need something that can give me some solid bass, as my synth sounds usually fill in for our lack of bass player. The Moog Sub Phatty seems amazing, and fits the description of what I need, but the MS-20 seems pretty versatile, and it's a lot more budget-friendly. Any advice you could give? Thank you
sounds good for a $600 analog synth. Not as deep as the original, but if one wants that sound and feel it ain't cheap. Glad to see Korg is taking Arturia's cue and going this route. Hope other manufacturers will take note and follow (hint, hint, Roland....I know it's probably a pipe dream)
Hi, thanks for the video. I was wondering, when playing with the pitch of the 2nd oscillator to have the ring modulator effect. Is it easy to get it back? the pitch to the right place? I play a lot of live music and want to be able to get the pitch right back. Does it have like a "easy" spot to get the pitch back? or do I have to tune it using external tuner to get it right?
Out of curiosity, would you suggest a MS20Mini or Juno 60 for my first synth? The ability to just explore and manipulate sound on the fly is the main thing I am looking for - the patching on the ms 20 is probably the most appealing feature of it to me and the arpeggiator on the 60 is its most appealing.
They are indeed digitally stabilzed though. Nothing intrusive though, I forget the direct schematics but its supposed to only interfere if it gets WAAAAY out of tune. Im guessing sudden heat changes etc etc. It doesnt effect the phasing sound at all, but I will let you know for sure when I get it.
Quick question. I've been looking around, and haven't seen this addressed. I know all the patch bay jacks have been shrunk to 3.5 millimeter, is that also true of the phones out and the main output?
I'm convinced you filmed this in my old farm house. I was wondering who moved there. I thought it was a chainsaw sculptor. Funny he's supposed to only be there during the seasons you'll be busy. Hmm plot thickens.
So I'm looking at getting into analog synths and I saw this on a couple beginner buyer guides. Would you recommend this to someone looking to get into synths?
Does this have all the 'defects' of analog synths, like needing to warm up or things like that. (I've never owned an analog synth, but i've heard this is what happens).
***** I want to ask something, is Noise Wave In VCO 1 sounds , how do i put it, Louder than other wave ? my Noise Wave almost "quiet" , the output more Low than Triangle wave, is mine defect ? thanks for reading
Thanks! I would gladly compare it to an original. If I had an original. :) I sold mine years ago. Korg recognized that I love analog synths, and let me do my thing. They aren't telling me what to say, and they're not paying me to say anything, either. I'm calling it as I see it.
Please don't hate me when I go into hibernation for the summer, winter, and fall. ;) There are a lot coming! Thank you for noticing. I really endeavor to make sure people are hearing what comes out of the synth!

I hope i don't sound too lame...But i knew the ms 20 only by name. I had the chance to buy at a discount the iMS-20 ipad app from Korg (around 15$). So having gone through some other hardware and software synths, i gave it a try, and immediately realised i was a cripple in front of it. I did a test run after having watched the videos and i must say it is a really, really, really good app. Sounds "SO" close to what i'm hearing in the video, and makes full use of the ipad's cpu.
hahaha it played normal this time...but i must say that I'm soooo f$#%in' jealous that you landed the gig scoring the soundtrack for Rogaine TNG, ye bastard.

I have been told that the pitch is NOT controlled digitally. I do like synthesizers that are a little messier in regard to pitch, but the MS-20 has ALWAYS been incredibly pitch-stable. I would say that of the analog synths I've played and owned from the 1970s, the MS-20 is far and away the most stable.
the only downside i could find was the cheap plastic feel to the synth- for a better build quality (perhaps metal or aluminum plated) i would pay another 100$ 150 for this- i tried it at namm and it is really great- def getting one to go with my korg legacy controller version i have

Roland should bring back the sh-101 but with a high pass filter - two 101s in the same box for dual oscillator, dual env sounds - an make it polyphonic - aw its a jupiter 6 now.
Hey Marc, the noise joke is funny and all, and I get that a lot of noise sounds similar, but why haven't you created one of your educational videos on the functions of noise. excuse me if you have one and I havent seen it,but youve done things like formant synthesis, but not noise.
