For those unaware, there exists a mod know as The Paathurnax Dilemma, which allows you to complete this quest without killing easily one of the coolest vanilla NPC's in the game. You basically tell Delphine that you're not killing him and that's final, and that she can't do or say anything to change your mind because you're the Dragonborn. It's a must-have mod in my opinion.
I do that and then kill Delphine and Esbern afterwards because they both become non-essential after the main quest is completed. Sky Haven Temple becomes a ruin again.
Yeah i’ve been using the mod. Honestly i really don’t hate Delphine as much as some do, everyone just hates her cause she wants you to kill Paarthunax and that’s it. I would like to convince her not to have Paarthunax dead, since i do see her as an ally of the Dragonborn somewhat, and Esbern is actually cool.

In general, almost everything involving delphine is unpleasant. Not "hateable" neccesarily, but unpleasant still. I wrote a whole list about every tiny character and writing flaw with both her and her questline, but youtube won't allow me to post it for some unholy unknowable reason. Suffice it to say: everything about her is annoying, a lot of it is illogical and hastily written, with the general sense that bethesda really just winged the whole process by writing cool scenarios first and then thinking up the backstory as an excuse, rather than the other way around. It ends up creating plotholes, weird logical leaps made by characters that are otherwise supposed to be of normal intelligence (or greater intelligence) and a general sense that Delphine has a hateable personality because she wants to and continuously does boss everybody around despite not having any real justifiable credentials to that effect. It's death by a thousand cuts. And boy did the writers cut delphine.

Even the original snake akavir blades would be rolling in their graves, they were the original dragon hunters but their royality was to the dragonborne(reman at the time and yes he was DRAGONBORNE in soul and body unlike his decents)

You can save Paarthunax if you talk to the gray beards after Delphine gives you this quest. The quest will be completed by the hidden option to tell the greybeards, saving our dragon friend.
You do then lose out on the ability to collect followers from around skyrim to join the blades and roam around skyrim hunting dragons. Also the blades have a recurring quest that you lose out on access to that quest-marks dragons on the map (although in fairness the greybeards' recurring radiant word-wall quests *are* more useful)
Yeah, you should totally get to tell off Delphine. Lazy good-for-nothing Blades wannabe. When I was in the Blades it MEANT something! (I remember release day of Arena, for context.)
To be fair, when we saw then in Oblivion, they are actually pretty incompetent when it come towards protecting their Emperor and just leave it all to the Hero of Kvatch to actually get the job done. It's better for the Blades to never exist at all due to how they basically ruined everything for basically anyone in Tamriel.
To be fair though, who is competent outside of the player character? I guess you could argue that the Blades were competent in Daggerfall - but that's only because the player character was one of their agents (and there were plenty of endings where you could betray them to one faction or another).

She appears very early too in the main quest. The lore you get about her in the Thalmor Embassy makes her seem badass and supercompetent. The issue is with the writing, they badly introduce characters, railroad the player character force decisions them into quests. This happens a lot in Skyrim. E.g. why is Delphine's way of doing the main quest the only way? Why is the only way to start Dawnguard to join the Dawnguard? ...and then not kill the vampire lady you find? Why is the only way to start the Dark Brotherhood questline involve getting kidnapped by Astrid and NOT reacting with violence? Why does the playet need to become a werewolf to progress in the Companions questline? There is FAR too much railroading for a RPG sandbox like Skyrim. A certain amount of limitations are necessary to make the game manageable from a game design, but the writing in Skyrim is terrible. Character like Delphine and Maven Blackbriar are so hated not because they're assholes (which they are), but they're assholes who the game does not allow you to punish or disagree with. Unfortunately because how the Blades are so badly implemented in Skyrim, this also extends to the Blades. The Blades should have been an alternate faction the player could build up as their own personal faction and powerbase, (like Yesman or the Minutemen in Fallout to give a vague comparison). Instead, well let's just say lots of Skyrim seems unfinished.
The big problem is Bethesda, unlike Obsidian, wants you to be able to join every major faction in one playthrough. The civil war was so hyped up but doesn't change anything or lock you out of anything. Dawnguard you can swap sides at various points which is stupid because both factions should not trust you if you did that. You can serve every Daedra including multiple who hate each other. If it were an actual RPG you would constantly be locking yourself out of choices by making other choices, just like in life. Side with the Stormcloaks and you aren't allowed to just walk up to General Tullius. You should be barred from Imperial cities until you complete the way and kill most of the important NPCs against your faction. And same for Stormcloaks. But 99% of important NPCs are invincible until they're not because the player needs to see everything in one go around as though people don't replay Bethesda games
@@adanufgail There is a modding project, I think Skyrim The Extended Cut, which is aiming to redo the main questline/lines. Hopefully they'll take on board things like this. It would be awesome to see these features involved in the game, or even the Civil War factions actually have a levelled list similar to bandits (with far more faction specific armor and weapons, and levelled soldiers).

I really want a Skyrim where they treat the Dragonborn like the Doom Slayer, because we get walked over, talked, down to, and no help all the time. No wonder we pickpocket, poison, and join the dark brotherhood. It's not likely being the Dragonborn gets you any respect so instead make them fear you. But yeah I think skyrim should be the dragonborn telling everyone what to do and what will be done as opposed to the other way around.
One way that Fallout is superior to TES is that it allows you to exterminate the writers' pet faction. Blades in TES case, but Brotherhood of Steel in FO's case.
