But most places have a couple weeks where it's absolutely lovely. You find days to enjoy them. And when you do, it's amazing.

Watching Jonny's videos frequently makes me angry at the car manufacturers. As Joan Rivers used to say, "What am I, chopped liver?" The USA is a huge car market, yet we usually get a heavily edited list of the models made, and frequently those models arrive a year or two late. California has almost twice the number of EVs registered as England, yet we'll be lucky to see the VW ID-4 next year (we may never get the ID-3.) Honda isn't selling the E in the USA. Soul EV? Maybe next year. The T-Roc? Nein.
Does it still have that hideous 'scratchy' hard plastic on the top of the dash? Previous generations of the older non-cabriolet did as i noted in my courtesy car a while back. It was an R-Line spec like this one, only a 1.6 diesel.
SUV convertibles just don't work, the proportions are all wrong and the passengers end up looking like hobbits in a human bathtub. If they want that open air experience they'd be better going with those all-glass roof panels, which has the added bonus of not needing all the structural adjustments. If they then want to be really fancy, make it retractable/removable.
As long as people are inherently lazy or getting old without keeping physically active then there’s only going to be more and more of them... the number of times I hear justification for ownership as ‘they’re so easy to get in and out of’ and yes predominantly form obese people 🤦🏻♂️ or parents whom utilise ‘the kids’ as they need a bigger car 🤷🏻♂️

It gets over 100f here sometimes I never use A/C in summer....or heat in winter. I will be moving to Sweden and I will bring a convertible as my maon car. The elements dont bother me.
@@brianiswrong lol people think that im being stupid when i put my roof down when its 9 degrees. they dont realise with heating on, seat heaters, wind deflactor, you are actually good to go. only when you stop though does it get cold
Its the tired old reviewers cliche, “you only get ten days a year to use it”. You either love and own cabs or you don’t. Overcast sky wouldn’t stop you from walking and it wont stop you from putting the roof down either. Boot space is less…..i don’t care as long as i can get two suitcases in the car. Back seats are cramped….i don’t care I’m not sitting in the back. The only time i don’t roof down is in a heat wave day when I’m in a traffic queue when its more comfy to have the roof up and the aircon on. Also most manufacturers don’t like you roof downing under 10 deg c because the rubber seals are stiffer. Best part of this review was the comparison with the older Golf that i own, it probably saved me from replacing the Golf with a Troc in future.

An interesting review - primarily for the fact that if you scratch the surface - the main body structure and hood mechanism of this T-Roc appear to be one and the same as the defunct Golf. It would also explain why the slightly older platform feels a bit underwhelming when it's springs and dampers are raised up for Suv purposes. There's a lot of reheating going on here .

Interestingly, VW actually made something like this before - the Beetle Dune Cabrio, essentially a lifted and off-roader clad Beetle drop top. And guess what? No one bought them. Seems like VW have a knack of over-engineering cars just to force them into a further niche within a niche of the market where they never see the light of day. On the Evoque convertible, as an ex-JLR saleman, all I can say is avoid. They have terrible wind-noise/buffeting at speed, roofs are prone to leaks and under the slightest suggestion of cornering at speed feel like they're flexing almost as much as their driver thinks they are by owning one. Thankfully, Audi still make/made the A3 cabrio, at least for the outgoing model, which is probably the closest thing you can find to a new Golf convertible. Great review Jonny!
I think it is a pity that hard top convertibles have pretty much disappeared now. So much better for year round motoring in the UK (especially if the roof is glass). I also don't like SUVs much. I am totally out of step with the world. I think in a very hot country convertibles make you fry and that's why they may be less popular, the UK is better in that respect. I had a Megane CC for ten years and mostly drove top down (wind deflector essential). I think being in the open air is kind of magic. Hopefully fashion will change again one day.
What I really don't get is people who buy cabriolets here in the UK and drive around in blistering weather with the roof up!? Pointless. You've lost rigidity and practicality and likely spent more than the equivalent tintop and you're not using the main feature of a cabriolet!?!?
I hate that SUVS are so prevalent in a world where people pretend to care about the environment, jacking up a car unnecessarily decreases efficiency and uses more fuel. And yet I'm seen as more of a problem in my diesel Golf. A stupid car for stupid people.
Nice video exploring the practicalities and a short history of convertibles Johnny. I had an EOS 1.4TSI from 2011 to 2019 (re-styled version, not with the rounded lights front and back), it was also a bespoke chassis like this T-Roc (so not based on any other VW car) and it was a great car, I did not have that many problems with mine. It was more expensive than the similarly sized Peugeot, Renault, Ford, and Vauxhall/Opel hard-tops but it was the only one where the roof was split to allow a separate slide & tilt sun-roof from the roof retract, so it was a bit special just for that. Had to practically stop to move the roof which was the biggest drawback. Finally went electric (last year) after last summer's fuel prices.
Whenever I see comments regarding this car, they are either in love or sooooo nasty! Like… bitter nasty to the point where I think they actually want one 😄
What has gone so wrong in the world of motoring that this is considered a good idea. All we can do is hope that REAL cars make a return in the near future.
Jonny, you'll hate this comment... but if the T-Roc has a decent towing capacity then I can see me in a second-hand one in 5 years; so I hope people buy them. Having driven a Grand Vitara convertible for ten years, a 206cc for two years (bit of a mistake that one, but still owned the Suzuki at the time) and now three years with a diesel EOS, I'm happy with mediocre. I don't want a driver's-car. I'm just after an 'adequate' car that I can take the roof off...... and still tow the caravan! After all, who wants to go on a summer holiday and not have their convertible with them when they arrive? So yes, a used T-Roc might just be ideal for me in retirement. Otherwise it'll have to be the latest and best EOS I can find!
I’ve owned 2 Mini Cooper S convertibles - they eventually shake themselves to bits despite reasonable design - still love the concept though 500c only other alternative now most manufacturers have culled their hard top convertibles or cabrios with golf and Astra convertibles quietly dropped
Cheers Jonny. absorbing video as always. Wonder if they had the VW 181/Trekker/Thing in mind at the start then lost their way in a fog of focus groups. After the Golf and Eos/CC decent designs this does seem a bit tragic. Oh well, have a lovely day. :)
Thanks, Jonny. Although I'm not in the market for a convertible (I have a Honda S2000 which I never drive with the top up) but it was nice going for a drive with you and hearing you talk about the T-Roc. I don't get the whole SUV craze either...
Great video as always. I'll say, the T-roc should have been an EV, the battery pack would have added stiffness to the vehicle with the battery down low which would have naturally favoured the higher seating position of the SUV platform. Couple with lower EV running costs and spritely performance dare I say it could have been a great EV at the right time. Another thing I'll add is I think EV's could potentially bring demand back for convertables, especially hard top convertables. My point is no one sells convertable EV's which bewilders me.
Dennis Richards I hear you. I also think that in this day and age there is no better way to quietly cruise through villages and backroads then an electric convertible. I drove a golf c and drive a vw Eos and an electric car. I wish some brand will make an electric convertible in the near future, like a Tesla Model C or an ID3c to name a few.
I've got a Focus CC and I love it and I took full advantage of the lockdown heatwave. Yes it does have its drawbacks such as the slightly leaky roof but that doesn't take any of the fun out of it. It always sparks conversation when I tell people I've got a Ford Focus convertible because very little people know that a focus convertible even exists. I'll always have a convertible now and I'll have my Focus CC until something drastically goes wrong with it. The T-Roc in question is a nice looking car but if I had that sort of money to spend on a car, I'd be more tempted to buy like a used Merc e-class convertible.
It's a shame about market share. Having a MINI convertible has practically changed our lives. The family of four would rather squeeze into a 2-door MINI than take our far more comfortable Ascent SUV anywhere, anytime. It helps we have 300 days of sunshine here in Colorado, USA. Also helps that the MINI is a JCW and, unlike that VW, is NOT slow :)
in my childhood this would have been a cool hotwheels toy car. i somehow only like old cars as the design gets worse and worse. i would prefer the VW eos over this (with 5 seats also)
What a ghastly thing that is. I just looked at Autotrader and there is a 2015 GTI convertible DSG and full leather that is only a few miles away for a touch under £12k......
Great vid, didnt expect you'd jump into a Golf in the same vid but imo the Golf's interior is miles nicer than the ghastly effort in the T-Roc and the Mk6 wasn't exactly Golf's finest hours. It's a shame really but yes, I agree, if you want to be silly and get a convertible, might as well get a beetle and dont take life too seriously!
Driving with the windows up looks “Gash” 😂 I spat my drink out I was not ready for that Johnny! It’s really great that you always talk about different manufacturers when reviewing cars and your knowledge and research is outstanding! Bravo Johnny I hope your channel goes far mate, you deserve it! 👍👍
another great video Jonny, this car is 100% made for the grey market. I can't believe you like the Evoque Cabriolet though! Currently considering a '94 SL320 convertible for weekend drives....anyone want to talk me out of it?
What has killed off most cabrios as far as manufacturers are concerned, are the CAFE regulations. Apart from the complexity, the small volumes due to limited markets (UK, Switzerland Germany), they are heavier, and therefore have worse fuel economy and CO2 figures which means they are even more expensive in taxes as well as fuel. In any case I agree with you that the T Roc is not a worthy successor to the Golf cabrio
It can be a chilly December day in Scotland but if there's a clear blue sky I'll put the roof down and put the seat heaters on. It's great. You can use a cabrio way more than you'd think in the UK.
3:26 Not true. If you don't live on west coast or up north it's pretty much every day you get a chance to drive top down apart from winter obviously. I find it actually more enjoyable to own convertible in the UK than in the central Europe as temperatures are mild but still sunny very often on the south coast. In central Europe you have to be hardcore to drive top down in no-frills convertible (no aircon, no cooled/heated seats, no air-scarf, no air-scoop,...) as early spring and middle and late autumn can be very cold and late spring and summer can be very very hot. UK is much better place to drive convertible.

Good call on the 181.
Thanks, Jonny. Although I'm not in the market for a convertible (I have a Honda S2000 which I never drive with the top up) but it was nice going for a drive with you and hearing you talk about the T-Roc. I don't get the whole SUV craze either...
as i understand u can not buy diesel t-roc cabrio with awd automatic ?? vw dont produce that trim.
My mum has the mk6 Golf Cabrio and loves it. She does not like this at all.
Did you steal my bathtub Jonny?
I tested the Evoque Convertible..and bought a Wrangler...just to have more fun with the doors and windscreen off ;)
good decision
No discussion about specs or tech gadget . Just pure emotions!! Like a pervert a Car Pervert ......Thank you for the good content!!
Your forgetting the original Dacia duster convertibles of the early eighties
Everything about this is just weird.
SUV convertibles really dont do it for me.
How to make a fugly car more fuglier..
Love it Jonny turbocharged hayfever there's an advert for antihistamines 😂👍
Another good video jonny. " my name is steve and I am a car pervert"
Wow where did this come from??? I was not expected a car of this sort. I always thought the Range Rover Evoque cabriolet was a silly idea.

It’s funny you mention the beetle, I’m sure that interior is right out the beetle parts bin, I just wish it was a hard top
that has to be the ugliest car ever and I think it's worse than the pt cruiser
in my childhood this would have been a cool hotwheels toy car.
i somehow only like old cars as the design gets worse and worse.
i would prefer the VW eos over this (with 5 seats also)
What a ghastly thing that is.
I just looked at Autotrader and there is a 2015 GTI convertible DSG and full leather that is only a few miles away for a touch under £12k......
Oh my, that's a bargain.
@@TheLateBrakeShow not sure about the wheels ....

If that wasn't DSG it would be my ideal spec.
This car can absolutely get in the sea
another great video Jonny, this car is 100% made for the grey market. I can't believe you like the Evoque Cabriolet though! Currently considering a '94 SL320 convertible for weekend drives....anyone want to talk me out of it?
This is going too far. I think eventually hatchbacks and sedans will make a comeback...
The 1.6 Diesel is such a better engine in the T-Roc
Wouldn't the first cab suv be the original Willies Jeep? (Yeah, I know, calling it a suv is probably a stretch)
Well Renault pre WW1 had 4wd cars and they had bits of roof missing (laundalet)
and in the UK it would probably be the Defender.
The Nissan Murano Cabriolet 2.0
3:26 Not true. If you don't live on west coast or up north it's pretty much every day you get a chance to drive top down apart from winter obviously. I find it actually more enjoyable to own convertible in the UK than in the central Europe as temperatures are mild but still sunny very often on the south coast. In central Europe you have to be hardcore to drive top down in no-frills convertible (no aircon, no cooled/heated seats, no air-scarf, no air-scoop,...) as early spring and middle and late autumn can be very cold and late spring and summer can be very very hot. UK is much better place to drive convertible.
