  • So much of our suffering is generated by our thoughts. In this video we explore what thought is, where our thoughts come from, and how we might change our patterns of thinking.
"When we believe what we think, when we take our thinking to be our reality, we suffer."
    - Adyashanti
"Here is a new spiritual practice for you. Don't take your thoughts too seriously."

We don't suffer life, we suffer from our thoughts.
Very well said. I think (I may be wrong) that the experience of every suffering whether physical pain, loss, injustice or of any other kind, arise in our minds in the form of thoughts.
Mind exaggerates, manipulates, tricks us into suffering. All of these thru thoughts.

It’s almost as if humans were programmed to perceive the worse in everything, first....Whatever one focuses on becomes stronger in one’s life. I try not only to focus on the positive, but to also feel positive. Positive thoughts! Positive Feelings! I’ve never even been hugged by ANYONE blood related and I’m an adult, not by my parents, not by my siblings, but I never dwell on it.....I still have to proceed with MY life for which I’m grateful...👏🏾

Unfortunately, there has been no persons in my life that can share or help expound on these concepts, until now. You've helped me by expressing these understandings exactly as I understand them to be, AND you do it in about twenty minutes! Reaffirming that I am on the right track to growing into a responsible being. Thank you.

Hi Donna, I can only tell you what I do personally, everyone does it differently depending on their experience and what works for them. The moment when I catch myself thinking useless/worrying/irritating thoughts, I recognize what I am doing, I say and think the word "clear". That stops the current thought pattern. I acknowledge to myself this is something I wish to be free of. I then take a moment to breathe, relax, clear and free my thoughts by "picturing nothing, a blank peaceful space where there are no thoughts or words, perfect nothingness". ha ha! It's not perfect but in time and with practicing it again and again, I catch them quicker, get rid of them faster and have them less frequently. Hope you are having a good weekend! Charles

@@charleslaughton8092 well I can only say a big Thankyou from my heart for explaining it so well Charles I really do appreciate your description of some so personal to you. I like the idea of using the word clear. That would work for me too. As you say, it takes practice. I am trying right now to be more patient in everything. Im 62 now, but since a child have always been erratic, I'm longing to have more peace of mind. Now the children are grown, I have more time for myself, and I am using apps to listen too. • @charleslaughton8092
      @charleslaughton8092 3 роки тому +7

....yes, this is a wonderful channel, very simple, easy, quiet and non-judgmental. I think "erratic" thinking is actually a very normal function of our human brain in that it is doing what it is programmed to do and that is to think helter-skelter about ideas/thoughts/feelings 24 hours a day, even in our dreams/sleep. The best news is that we can step in and re-think and re-train our brains to a certain extent. It actually makes me happy to think that I can observe myself thinking about something negative, spot it, halt it and re-guide it in another direction. Some days I have to "re-guide" my thoughts many many many many times but I would rather do that then to believe that I am stuck thinking nonsense/negativity and racing thoughts. Keep up the good work Miss Donna! One of my favorite sayings is "Today is the first day of the rest of your life and if that doesn't work out then tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life" meaning if you have a bad day, you get another chance tomorrow to start all over again...ha ha!

My thoughts cajole me, wheedle & winnow their way along beside me. They tell me stories, they deceive me without even intending to. We trust our thoughts implicitly.
Try to escape your thoughts for a few moments, and see how reluctant they are to let go. They don't mean you deliberate harm. They're more like a rambunctious pet pulling us into periodic danger.
All you need to do is calm the mind like such a pet, put it at ease, let it become peaceful and take a rest. And like a pet it comes to trust YOU more over time, and starts to work with you, not against you.
The stronger such moments of retreat from thoughts become, and thus the more our mind trusts us, the more measured and peaceful and truly objective it becomes.
Help your thoughts become your friend. And everything changes, without fanfare, without sudden shifts. Your life changes like a landscape being released from a great storm.

It takes some a great deal of suffering to be in a mental state that is ready to listen to a different way. That's what it was for me. It wasn't laziness, in my experience-- in fact, being told I was lazy just solidified that self-perspective and perpetuated more of the same. I just didn't know any other way. Trying harder wasn't the key; it was simply a lack of awareness. And awareness comes when the soil has been tilled and prepared. ♥️

Awaken Insight Yes I believe in all of my thoughts and yes I believe in everything you said in this video because every moment of existence is real including our thoughts. The lie is still the truth because the truth is still the lie, you either have always believed this is your first acceptance of existence(illusion) or you have always accepted this as your infinite first belief of existence(reality) which will repeat infinitely as neutral finite knowledge, but you can't have the reality without the illusion and vice versa. History is only based on being and becoming existence and becoming and being existence because you can't have one without the other as the finite neutral existence of history, knowledge is finite but it must be infinitely believed by replicating itself infinitely, your first belief of existence is your only reality so it must be infinite by repeating itself infinitely.

I left a religious church (prior to attending school) because when questions are asked and can’t be answered they blame you for asking or deflect and try to make you question your question. Why, because they don’t have an answer. I left the school and never went back.

This video has brought much confirmation to the cognitive behavioral therapy I do for myself daily. I tend to attach others beliefs to myself and take things very serious and personal. This has created much suffering for me, as these thoughts shaped and molded my life for so long. It has stopped me from doing the things that I love and being around the people that I love. Like you said, you cant forcefully change your thoughts but you have to have the belief and power within yourself to overcome those thoughts with positive ones and in time you will see that results of the positive thinking. I love your content and I will share it with others.

In the past I personally fed the wrong thoughts but at some point I become more aware of this and learned to better control my thoughts and I feel that I am doing much better now. I find that when your meditating anytime during the day, when you have a thought that's connected to a feeling that's when you should be aware of the thought , because there's something deeper then just the thought itself so when you have that feeling that's connected to a thought dig deep and find out it's root origin good or bad and seek to act upon through confessing or verbalizing the thought and emotion and seek whatever form of reconciliation, whether it be forgiveness if needed or just a realization of it then letting it go and with it flying away on the wings of your acceptance.

I would think that the majority of my negative thoughts come from self criticisms rather than due to something that someone has said. Many people can have perfectionist streaks in them so can't be happy when things are not quite right despite other people saying things are fine.

Thoughts are interpretations, not truth. That change in perspective using the word "interpretation" has been monumental for me. To deepen your perspective on this search "Donald Hoffman do we see reality." We don't see reality, we see interpretations of reality which was evolutionarily best for our survival.

Best advice I was ever given: “The unexamined life is not worth living”
