I think it's a mistake to try to evaluate _Queen Mary 2_ , or Cunard, based on cruising experiences: This is an ocean liner, in the tradition of her namesake, _Mauretania_ , and _Carmania_ . Ocean liners, while luxurious, are designed to take people and cargo to a destination quickly and comfortably. Cruise ships are designed for leisure and entertainment for as many people as possible at a time. They are not designed to forge their way through storms. Even cruising on _QM2_ should be expected to be a different experience from cruising on an actual cruise ship: both are better at their own experience.
I have heard that _QM2_ is a maze to navigate. This is part of her design as an ocean liner: Because she is designed to weather Atlantic storms and meet her schedule, dining and entertainment venues are mostly located low down, toward the center of the ship. That way passengers experience much less of the ship's roll and pitch while there. By the same token, cabins nearer the top deck, as well as close to the sides or the bow and stern, will experience more pitch and roll. I have heard it advised that if you know you are likely to experience motion sickness, you should try to book a cabin in a low deck, as deep as you can, and as close to the centerline as you can. Of course, you can always get an anti-seasickness injection, although that apparently knocks you out for a day.
As there are events and lectures to attend throughout a crossing, I think the idea is to experience as many of those as possible, although different people will want different things, including lounging on deck or in your cabin. That's why you don't have to dress in your formals for dinner, you can always go to one of the a la cartes, I believe.
I think part of _QM2_ 's popularity is from the novelty of doing the crossing: It's the closest we can now get to experiencing the _Titanic_ , _Lusitania_ , and other legendary liners (although hopefully without their often-tragic ends). But there is also the aspect that some people are afraid of flying, and that's okay. Ships and trains provide alternate methods of travel. And then there are the rail and ship-fans, who would go on trains and ships anyway.

No theme park attractions? Sign me up. I’ve travelled all round the World on real liners, no cabin tv and no sideshow crap. Enjoyed every single minute but we had worldly sophisticated passengers who were so interesting to talk with. QM2 is a liner not a cruise ship though she does cruise off season.

For those who are whining about lack of usb ports, just buy a "65W Multi 6 Port USB Type-C Charging Station Hub Tower", "Universal USB & Type C Tower" or something similar to these 2. Just plug it, then you have plenty of USB ports you can use. Ok, next.

The reason there is no modern tech in the cabins is due to the advanced age of the average QEII passengers, many of whom were born before the invention of electricity. Many are still trying to get used to this new wireless thing (radio). Voices coming out of the ether? Preposterous!

I appreciate that everyone has different priorities. We have no desire to have in cabin entertainment. Our aim is to be around the ship and active other than when sleeping, showering and dressing up. For us with no mobility issues it would be a waste of money to travel on QM2 and stay in our cabin. And I keep reading comments about USB sockets. They might be useful in public areas but what spec of USB would they fit in the cabins? Our current phones use 30W and 33W charging. The next ones are likely to be at least 58W. We're much happier to bring our own and know that devices will charge at the usual speed.

We've just done a festive QM2 7 night transatlantic crossing from New York. We had a sheltered balcony cabin, flight to New York and $150 each obc. We thought it was amazing value for £1,369 each. In addition we had 2 half bottles of sparkling wine in our cabin, a glass of sparkling wine on Gala night, drinks at the Captain's welcome, drinks at the senior officers' cocktail party and a complimentary wine tasting. I couldn't believe how much was included for the price.
We've booked again for Queen Anne in August.

Hi Dan and Jay, I thought of this as I watched, Those little things missing in the cabin, the tv variety, the plugs, and such, I thought to myself, maybe they left them out, intentionally, to keep the style of Old World Cruising in tact, without the modern amenities, you would find on other cruise lines?? If you aren't distracted by thrill and media, you "Would" focus on the suite life while aboard, so QM2 keeps her originality in World Cruising. I'm troubled that service and attention to detail, ranged from outstanding to "not so good." Hmmm I wonder where that disconnect in staff takes place? I'm at least glad Queens Grill was pleasing for you.

Just came back from a December 2023 TA in Queen Mary 2… we are not foodies and love to dance. I feel like our Queen Grills experience was a 10 as far as the suite, included spirits package and the Queen Grill dining experience. However we did not have breakfast or lunch in the Grill restaurant- nor Tea or cocktail lounge so perhaps we paid too much for an experience we did not really engage in. Our next crossing will be in a Britannia level balcony.

Nice review from one who has done Transatlantic crossings on QM2 in both Britannia and Princess Grills. I want to add there are very nice light breakfast items, small sandwiches, and pastries during the day in the Corinthia Lounge that is included in the fare. Also, many lounges offer nice canapés with drinks in the evening as part of the regular service.
Cunard does have a problem of raising expectations too much yet they generally deliver. The average age onboard does not reflect the age of those on the brochures though!
Bottom line, once you tried the Grills experience it’s hard to go back!

I took my Father in Law (90) on the 10 day from NY to Hamburg Germany. I give it a mixed review; OK, but should never be compared to a ocean cruise ship. Cost was reasonable, design is dated, maintenance was ongoing during the cruise (even in our balcony twice!). Ship layout did not flow very well. Elevators were very slow. Food was not good, many selections which looked appetizing but weren't). Entertainment was average. Activities were numerous, repetitive & not things I (60) cared to participate in. Cabin & service was adequate, but we could have done without the painting of our balcony (strong & awful smell) & smoke alarm installation (both while we were in our room). In summary, QM2 was just not our cup of tea.

Diana its worth it,if you want to do transatlantic, but the dining is overhyped.
The buffett is decent in fact you will see people coming here in full evening wear after having left the main dining resturant probably hungry.
The entertainment is the equivalent of watching paint dry.
You can request a private table in the main dining room,or you will eat with strangers, but my honest tip avoid the main resturant all together
