It’s not so much that Cunard is “older” as that it is consciously “retro”- they aspire to keep “the Golden Age of Travel” alive. The ship’s decor reflects that, but so too is the dress code necessary to preserve that ambience. I think the entertainment also reflects this-more lectures and classical music. Also they must be one of the only lines that have real libraries on their ships! Personally I love it-the same way I loved travelling on the Orient Express and the Pride of Africa trains.

In my 30s I was a cruise operations coordinator for several cruise lines, including Cunard, for two large travel companies here in North America. I did all of this from my desk in Boston, Massachusetts.
We were the largest booking agency for Cunard on the North American Continent. I was given a transatlantic crossing on the QE2. I found later that I was booked into princess grill, so I went to Keyzers, a wonderful men’s clothing store near Harvard University in Harvard Square. I bought a tuxedo and I got red, white, and black, matching bow ties and cummerbunds for my transatlantic cruise.
I loved the experience of this transatlantic crossing! It draws an entirely different crowd than you get on a 7 day, 7 port cruise. A rockstar, whose wife was too pregnant to fly, but they wished for their child to be born in England, a world-class, tap dancer, who is no longer with us, that got a bit bored on the second day out, so he decided to give tap dancing lessons in the Queen’s ballroom, for free, and a star trek captain, who was rather shy, and mostly kept to himself.
A transatlantic crossing is an entirely different world! Other than river cruising, it’s the only cruise that I shall ever do again! 😸

The grills transatlantic cruise is wonderful. The restaurant is amazing-staff, decor, food, wine. I found that after the second day I completely lost track of days. Time would literally float by and the huge amount of things you could do meant you could be busy constantly if you want. I would do it again in a second. A large balcony with lounge chairs, a dressing room with walk in closets, huge bath, couch, king size bed, free liquor. To me it was like staying in a 5 star resort. I think the “older crowd” vibe is in people’s heads. If you are young and looking for loud crazy parties, not for you. If you are young and appreciate class and being treated very well, you will really appreciate Cunard.

I’m a 32 year old cruiser, and had my first experience with Cunard last year onboard Queen Elizabeth for 2 weeks as we transmitted the Panama Canal. I found the ship to be quiet ALL the time - even the middle of the afternoon on a sea day! Good to see you covering a ship like this - really enjoyed this video!

Great video! We are a couple in our early 30’s but are definitely old souls. Love reading, antique shopping, afternoon tea and just chilling out in a more elegant environment. I was a bit worried about booking a Cunard cruise as I still thought we might stand out and be seen as a little strange but I think you’ve convinced me. Queen Mary to New York I think. The Queen Anne looks incredible too, modern but still super classy! Would love to see a video of either the queen Mary or Anne 👍

Since most regular cruisers have a Transatlantic on the only existing/ operating ocean liner on their bucket list, you'll probably find that you're not standing out at all on that route. I did it in October 2022 and loved it. And do go and watch the show in the planetarium. Reserve seats ( they are free, but limited) as soon as you can.

We are a couple in our mid 30's (like you we prefer quieter holidays where we can relax and explore). We've cruised with Cunard a couple of times now and didn't feel at all out of place. There's plenty to do if you want to stay busy but it's just such a lovely place to relax.

I'd say it would, suit you down to a tee. Whilst the majority of people will be 55-75 there's always a number outside of this range, as well as gay couples, and single people onboard. Nationality, tends to be 70%+ UK and the remainder mainly US, AUS, NZ, with always a small contingent from Japan. Lucy described the people and atmosphere exactly. Although, I've not seen people dress up for afternoon tea and daytime is really jeans and T shirt etc. After 6pm it changes to fit the 1920's liner decor.

Lucy, thanks for a lovely video! Whether vlog or narrated-in-post, it's fine with me (although if you're out in port, vlogs are of course better). I'm glad you enjoyed Cunard, and btw while I know you enjoyed Virgin the best (both working on and cruising on), I do get a sense of surprised-happiness in your voice regarding this experience. And who knows, in a few years you may find yourself taking another one-week Cunard cruise (to relax, decompress, etc.)?
Take care, Fair Winds, and stay warm up there sweetie! 😀

Queen Mary 2 Transatlantic in December is spectacular, as the ship is all done up for Christmas. And yes Cunard is about ambiance, the enrichment program, just relaxing with a more traditional tone. I've done 4 Transatlantics and loved them all.

Particularly interesting video, Lucy so thanks for that! My wife and I (58& 60) only started cruising in 2014 and have only done Cunard cruises, except that we tried Celebrity (Silhouette) 2 years ago. I found your video very insightful and similar to what we have experienced. For us, ( 'older souls' 😂) Cunard is perfect - quieter, more laid back, a bit dressier - a bit 'classier' dare I say? We also like it for the good gluten-free food offer; it's far, far better than Celebrity offered us. We are also looking forward to seeing how Queen Anne subtly moves things more into the current vibe, without disrupting what makes Cunard good (for us). It would also be fascinating to see you experience a QM2 transatlantic trip!

Right On. Classy, elegant and relaxed = CUNARD! Probably more intellectually stimulating vs. the constant loud Dance Party scene of others. More appreciative of finer things, abeit appearing quite Slower in appearance to a younger generation with short attention spans, it's actually a very full and satisfying experience. Would I have enjoyed it during my youth? Maybe not so much on some levels, but the Awe Factor would have made it clear it was special. Plus, intergenerational mingling is fantastic and healthy for all.

The Dress Code. I would have to challenge your opinion there - people tend to cruise Cunard in part because of the dress code (regardless of their age) and regulars tend to make sure they stick to it after 5. It is usually people who've never been with the line before who flaunt the rules and let the side down, which are even more lax now than before Covid. What people are a bit tired of are the "gala night" (formally formal night) themes, and so depending on the cruise and demographic the percentage who embrace the theme varies. Given it was a 4-night cruise (of two 2-night segments) prior to the world cruise starting, there was a huge difference in the passengers and is probably not an accurate representation as there were those who'll have embarked Southampton and disembarked Hamburg; those who embarked Hamburg, and disembarked Southampton; and those who did the full 4-nights before continuing onto the world cruise. Naturally those who were only doing either 2-night segment would want to try to pack light and may not have necessarily brought a "proper" formal wear with them.

I'm SO not a dress-up kinda guy but I love the idea of stepping back in time and enjoying something a bit more sedate than what I've experienced on Carnival, Norwegian, etc. I very much enjoyed everything about this review... you get to the point, you're honest, and you keep things moving at a great pace.

We took a transatlantic in January 2028 on Victoria. Since we were repatriating to the US, our travel wardrobe was limited and we struggled a bit with the dress code. For example, my sport coat with nice jeans and casual footwear was not appropriate for some nights, and we were not served in the pub or permitted on certain parts of the ship. However, the ship and stateroom were wonderful, and the food in the Lido Cafe was excellent. We also found a grill in the pool area, which was great.

Follow the rule of 1/3s. Your eyes should be 1/3 from the top of frame, 2/3s of YOU. If you look one way to get a profile shot, 2/3 in front of you, 1/3 behind (Look room). Miss Lucy - Very nice, informative vlog, I really enjoyed the content regarding Cunard. Also nice that you met a friend on board with whom you used to work with - how cool was that? I immediately noticed when you changed from your camera to your phone for the video - interestingly, the color of your wall decoration was far richer with the phone's camera, your main camera's colors seem a bit more washed out comparatively. You also mentioned sound quality, and I agree that there's something a little "off" about it - both with your main camera and your phone's camera. It may be due to the acoustics of the room you're filming in that's contributing to the sound quality? Here's a thought: perhaps if you could figure out a way to hang a blanket behind the camera, that might help improve the acoustics by reducing reflected sounds coming back from the wall? Experiment and see? Keep up the good work, always enjoy your vlogs, and have learned a lot thru them! Cheers!

I did the Hamburg 5 nights on the Cunard Queen Mary 2. I'm in my 50s and loved it! There was lots of entertainment but I would agree it might be the most exciting for youngsters. For instance there are quizzes, the planetarium, talks, art gallery and library and gym/spa. Evening entertainment was Motown hits etc. Kids and teenagers would probably be bored. There was nightclubs/dancing though for those who like to boogie the night away. My family wanted to have dinner every night in the Britannia but I personally found the menu too formal (a bit posh for my liking!) so I prefer the flexibility of the self service restaurant.

We always find that Cunard was always slightly better for than it's sister line, P&O. P&Os food is now terrible, to the point where even the low priced couldn't tempt. So, it makes sense Cunard's is just "okay". I'd love to go back onto Cunard, especially the new Queen Anne, but until the reviews improve it'll have to wait! We are going on Fred Olsen now these days, which are dearer, but that I actually look forward to and relish meal times.

Hi Lucy, I've sailed the QE2 original, Mary 2, victoria and Elizabeth, yes very different demographic to Royal, princess, celebrity etc, I would now fit in well now because I've just turned 60, however besides, the general class that the the majority of passengers are, you also have the queen grill and I think king, could be wrong on that, which provides an elevated experience in the cabin and food department and old style cruising, a little more formal but nice, privides an alternative to the other cruise ship offerings, also the passengers on board if you chat to them have a interesting story/history to talk about, rather than some chav, looking for the nearest toilet to sniff a line up their hooter 😜 so horses for courses really, you appreciate it, or hate it😂

We did the trip from Southhampton to NY, and viewed from the Commodore lounge, sailing into NY at dawn, with the sun rising behind the statue of liberty was a sight I will not forget! Coming into Southampton is a more everyday event.......

I loved leaving from NYC-the sailaway views were at sunset and spectacular, and going under the Verrazano is kind of incredible. My sister has done it both ways, and thought sailing into NYC at 5am was not as good. I’m doing Southampton to NYC in November, for the Literature Festival at Sea!

If you are a party animal, you may not like it. It is quite, peaceful, relaxing and sophisticated. It's so funny how cruise reviewers always say "The Dress Code, is it really as strict as everyone says?" No one says that except for cruise reviewers lol, but I guess it's like a lot of other stupid things that they say.
    Overall a good review.
