- The game is set in the fictional town of Greeley Valley, Iowa. The main character, Jacob, joins a tractor-drawn trailer called Spooky Sam's Ghost Tour on its path through a cemetery. According to an urban legend, if a golden token is inserted into the jester's mouth on top of the tombstone of Ludwig von Tökkentäkker, a haunted amusement park will rise from the earth.

I saw the intro for this game when I was a very young child (like 8-10), and it absolutely TERRIFIED me. That memory has been sitting in the back of my head for *years* and I couldn't figure out what the name of the game was, up until some random UA-camr played it in a video I was watching and I was like "OH".
I thought i was the only one who remembers this. It absolutely terrified me when i was a kid too but i honestly thought it was a fever dream or something.😅

I remember Carnevil from my local cinemark. Would play it every time before going to a movie...it's gone now, but I always remember to look for the tomb with the skull of a jester, bringing a variety of tokens shiny and new. :P
I saw this at an arcade in Arkansas once, I only played it once...
I died immediately because I didn’t know how to reload
Don't you just shoot off screen? Or was this game different than other arcade shooters?
@@steamedauroraborealis8208 You can either pump the shotgun (if the machine uses the custom shotgun CarnEvil normally comes with) or shoot off screen

Gotta love it. Our intrepid hero unwittingly summons Carnevil, battles his way through and dispatches Tokkentaker, saves the girl... Who had died several times by this point... And...

I remember when I finally beat it and got that ending. I thought, "I'd do the same thing" mostly because it took me like 3 years before I beat it. What's crazy is when i finally beat it I did it in under $3. 11 year old me was happy.
I wish that there was more than one ending for this game. Let’s say that the hero putting in the coin again would be the bad ending. There should be a good ending that would be rewarded for collecting/shooting certain hidden objects. In the good ending, the hero would wise up and throw the coin into a river or someplace where nobody would find it. That way, CarnEvil would never rise up again.

I believe the legend of Carnevil rising up from hell if a token is put in the jester's mouth on Halloween, is kinda reminiscent of the legend of the Sanderson Sisters, from hocus pocus rising up from the grave if a virgin lit the black flame candle on Halloween.
All I can say to the main character is: Wait to go Dumbass, you doomed us all.
If you think THIS was stupid on the main character’s part, wait ‘til you find out what he does in the ending.
*(SCROLL DOWN FOR SPOILERS!)*
CarnEvil disappears after the final boss is defeated, and the main character (along with the damsel in distress whom you always have to avoid shooting) wakes up the following morning back in the cemetery in front of LVT’s tomb. Another token pops out, this time with the words “GAME OVER” on the back...
... *and the main character proceeds to PUT THE TOKEN IN THE JESTER’S MOUTH YET AGAIN!!*
The jester swallows the token, and the game ends with the jester laughing evilly as the screen darkens to show only his glowing eyes.
Now, to be fair, this WAS during the day (not during the full moon as specified in the legend) and CarnEvil is not actually shown returning after this, so one could potentially interpret this as the player trying to get rid of the token so that it could never be used again. Or another theory I’ve heard of is that the villains’ goal was to gradually turn the main character into one of them, in which case him giving back the token could be interpreted as the villains being at least partially successful in this regard (at least inasmuch as he would actually want to go back to CarnEvil and do it all over again). Or if one REALLY wanted to stretch their imagination, perhaps it could be argued that he wanted to go back to CarnEvil to destroy it for good. However, I literally cannot think of a single other scenario that wouldn’t have me facepalming at the main character’s utter stupidity.🤦♂️ 🤦♀️

Remember once a month would go up to The Mall. The Arcade there had this game. Being a little kid, really looked forward to arcade games and seeing new horror films every weekend. Good times. Definitely.
Used to play this game at an arcade in Glenbrook Square Mall in Fort Wayne, Indiana in the late '90s. It always made me wanna watch Evil Dead 2 back to back with Killer Klowns from Outer Space.
Just watching this reminds me of being at a hotel in the game room playing this. Good times.

My dad & I played this game once at the arcade at the ice rink. I managed to get through the Haunted House, but I couldn’t get past Evil Marie.

@TwelveFractions AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core Processor 2.5Ghz, 2GB Ram Geforce 9600GT. I haven't played this game for awhile but I found how to accurately use the mouse in the game and it was great I think i used the latest version when I record this video.

I had beaten all the attractions in carnevil but the one that I liked the most is the big top
