  • The ability to play "double-stroke" rolls on the pedals, can open up an entire world of possibilities on the drum kit. Russ discusses applying the principals of the "Double-Stroke" roll, usually done only with the hands, to the pedals. Used in many ways, from fills to solos and building ostinatos, this is an invaluable lesson for every drummer. For metal drummers, to playing amazing fast "blast beats", this ability is key to power, finesse and stamina in busy bass drum playing.

    That bass drum is very badly mixed in my opinion, you can barely hear the strokes apart

    at 3:04 you should be playing:
    LlrRllRrlLrr and looping that instead of just saying the syllables louder whlie playing with flat dynamics

    I don't know if he likes his setup like that. I assume those beaters are felt even though they look different. I would have put some Remo Falam Slams, maybe some more muffling and used plastic beaters, all for more attack. The double strokes would be heard clearer then.

    It's nearly impossible to let those triplets sound evenly! Even Russ struggles with it.

      Yeah right, lol. I noticed that too. If u had to do this live at a show it might get lil sloppy.

    i have never seen the point in getting double bass dynamics honestly i think double pedal stuff only works in a rock setting and is meant to be powerful not barely heard. that just my opinion

      Thats a weird way of thinking. Almost like saying you can be dynamic with your hands, but don't even try with your feet. Especially considering double bass drumming has its roots in big band, didn't even start in "rock" drumming.

    • @CrNgLrD
      @CrNgLrD 9 років тому +2

      AquaAnim ok first could you give me some names of big band drummers who used double bass so i can check that out, but i never said foot dynamics are pointless. foot dynamics are very important for just about all drumming styles but double bass drum dynamics seem pointless. when i play i don't typically use double bass unless its a very aggressive genre like metal, punk, some modern hard rock. but i feel like double bass playing adds aggression to a song more than any other emotion. throwing double bass into gospel or even some lighter hard rock its to me comes across as just being showy as apposed to adding to the feel of the song. I'm not saying everyone should never learn how to do dynamic double bass playing in fact go ahead and try learning it, its just for how i play, double bass is ether powerful consistent hits or dynamic single foot work. thats how i play. also id like to say I'm self taught and by no means am i a great drummer in fact i wouldn't even say I'm a good drummer. so take my opinion as a grain of salt if you like haha

      5rotflol Louie Bellson was a jazz drummer and the pioneer of the double-bass setup. And I see where you're coming from when you say that double-bass typically doesn't need to be very dynamic in those genres, but there are other applications for double-bass playing that can use dynamics; such as soloing. Also, learning this foot control is very helpful and will better your skills for more than just double bass. Anyways, good luck with your drumming, dude!

      It's not something I'd work on unless u got everything else pretty good first. U can easily play big band or jazz without it. It's like an extra credit assignment in school.

      Tommy igoe one of the best big band drummers in the world who has his own legit big band plays single bass usually.

    Holy crap dude you say do this with your foot and then show us and then say yea just do that and speed it up when I can’t figure out how to make my foot move like that 😂 sucks not having any rhythm

  • @TW_Drums
    @TW_Drums 9 років тому +2

    At slow speeds like this, I think it's far more effective to have powerful single strokes than inconsistent doubles. That triplet rhythm was complicated far more than it needed to be when it could've easily been played with single strokes and it would help with independence more with single strokes. This is being taught as toe-heel when I think it's pretty clear the heel-toe technique, or heel-up as some people refer to it, is far more effective and consistent... But only at high speeds. What's the point of limiting yourself at slow speeds like this. If you look at any good drummer, they know when to switch from singles to doubles on the kit. You think Alex Rudinger is gonna play doubles at a tempo like this? Hell no. It's like relying on double strokes all the time when playing simple 16th note fills around the kit. I love you Vic Firth and I like the idea of these lessons, but I'm always less than impressed with the "teachers"

    • @Koolaidstraw
      @Koolaidstraw 9 років тому +4

      Woah.... Do you have any clue who Russ Miller is? Look at his website. And the point of this lesson is to develop doubles with your feet. In no way is he telling you that using doubles is better than singles for all applications. He's simply throwing out the idea that you can use doubles, not only with your hands, but with your feet. He also states that this method makes a different sound and dynamic than 16th note singles on double bass. Also, doubles with your feet can be very useful with alternate setups; such as multiple bass drums, multiple hi-hats, and pedal-driven cymbal stacks. Look up foot ostinato patterns, and you'll see how useful developing this skill can be. And I'm sure that, if Alex Rudinger wanted the sound that is achieved from playing doubles with your feet, he would use it. Remember, everything you practice with drums can be useful. Once you start playing different styles of music, you'll probably find a time where this method of playing double-bass will give you the sound you want. Good luck with your drumming, dude!

      Koolaidstraw I think you mistook what I said like I was insulting him. If it came across that way, I didn't mean it. All I'm saying is heel-toe is more effective, in my opinion and my personal experience. It gives you more consistent doubles than this method. I'm not saying that he's a bad player, not at all because I look up to him... I'm just saying that I was less than impressed with this lesson and him as a teacher... not as a player. As you said, this style of doubles can be useful for other things, so I think he should have elaborated on those things... I'm partial to heel-toe for double bass. Plus as I said, I just don't see the point in doing doubles at this slow speed. But thanks for the input, I see where you're coming from. I hope you understand my thought process a little more now. Good luck with your drumming as well :)

      I kinda agree. I'd rather gave some musical content to work on than technique. Technique is very subjective and different techniques work better for different people. I love russ and his drumming but him bout sone lessons on some latin and world grooves he likes with a PDF of it transcribed.

      I definitely agree. While Russ Miller has IMMENSE studio experience and playing ability, based on this video he has NO business acting as an authority on the subject.

    You don't need double strokes to have dynamics. George kollias has 10x more dynamics 10x more speed and 10x more power and control and he does singles. I'll stick with my singles lol no hate to anyone who prefers this method tho

      +herbmonster99 Where are the dynamics? Speed. Yes. Power. Yes. But what dynamics are there in Kollias' playing??

    There are more techniques than this one... and they depend on the drummer... why does vicfirth lowered their drummerstandards... the same as here in central america with sponsored drummers , they sucks , but i believe its because they are old ... they need young people behind their gear...

      Guberto Grajales Dude....Russ Miller is a world renown drummer,who has played with the best players on the planet!! What does age have to do with it? Buddy Rich was the best on the planet when he died in his late 70s...and no young drummer on the planet is going to take a gig off of Weckl,Steve Smith or Vinnie!!

    this guy is hilarious. playing at 125bpm and thinks he has room to talk down to other drummers. He should give up his dad rock gig now and just work on comedy.
