Alrighty then for all those wondering Aggy took 116 total attempts to beat Malenia, which breaks down into 110 deaths to phase 1, 5 deaths to phase 2 and the final winning attempt. Time elapsed from the end of the intro cutscene to her death message was 4 hours and forty five minutes. Radagon and Elden Beast together took him 36 total attempts, with 30 deaths to Radagon, 5 deaths to Elden Beast and the final winning attempt. Additionally, Aggy walked into Malenia at around 1 am his time and then _didn't stop_ attempting the boss for the rest of the night. In that time he went to change cosmetics twice for the joker character. When he finally beat Malenia stream was ended for the night. Notable strategies employed for the boss fight include keeping Malenia in the center of the boss room as much as possible for the buff to lightning-elemental damage, constant inventory management to switch between Ritual Sword Talisman(+10% while at full health) to Assassin's Crimson Dagger(heal on successful crit, triggers twice per riposte), use of the Lightning Physick Tear and having to use bloodhound's fang to phase transition Malenia to get around the FromSoft quick-fix where she can't be phase transitioned by a riposte. Radagon required more strategy but was thankfully less bullshit about phase transitioning to Elden Beast. Notable parts of the boss fight include the obvious complete loadout change for the Elden Beast fight, the cursed Ritual Sword Talisman (which would consistently see Aggy fail a parry, taking damage and requiring to re-equip Crimson Dagger), the Elden Beast being significantly more aggressive once dropped to about 40% health (it consectively launched elden stars, attacked more aggressively while elden stars was active, and used longer true combo attacks), the elden beast having 22,000 something health(fully buffed damage was only possible for three minutes of the fight and the final attempt took almost twenty minutes by itself), fully-buffed damage doing around 574 damage if all three Carian Retaliation projectiles landed and traversing the entire boss room at least twice during the winning attempt.

Parry timing in the Dark Souls games was always weirdly late, whereas it makes more sense in Elden Ring. So it'll take a bit of re-learning for Souls veterans, but overall it's far more intuitive now.

@@BigDBrian Yeah the difference isn’t the parrying, it’s the movesets. Enemy attacks are a lot faster during the actual damage animation but have much longer windups or switch between different speeds of attacks quickly. Whereas DS3 was very consistent with enemy attack speed and windups
The thing about them nerfing Carian Retaliation while leaving Golden Retaliation alone: You can put Carian Retaliation on any shield capable of parrying. So you could put it on a buckler or a heater shield and call it a day. Minimal requirements for a ridiculous amount of damage, especially with the exploit where your opponent can't even see the projectiles in some cases. Golden Retaliation comes on one unique shield that upgrades with Somber Smithing Stones and has some pretty steep requirements compared to any of the small or medium shields you could slap Carian Retaliation on. Your opponent will also 100% know you have it if you have that shield out, and can actually see the projectile if you send it at them. Carian Retaliation was broken and needed a nerf. People were using an entirely different exploit with the Erdtree Greatshield, and both of these exploits got patched out anyway. Plus this upload is a month old so I doubt anyone will see this comment anyway.
Well the issue wasn't the damage. It was that you could parry your own spells or use glintstones to parry extremely reliably. So you could setup almost instantly anytime you wanted. The damage would've been fine if they just made it not been parryable by your own attacks. Instead they nerf bat it down so hard it is near unusable except in the early game. For an attack to never get better past 300 damage when there are bosses that have 10-22k hp is insane. I get you don't want things to melt bosses like sword of night and flame but did you not have anyone use these attacks before going huh maybe that's too much damage? Yeah buckler parry is what makes it special compared to a normal parry, which does work differently between small shields, medium shields, and parrying weapons. And even then Carian Retaliation is actually just better, works the same on any shield that can use it, has better frame data, and only uses FP if you absorb a spell.
@@JakeFish5058 Yeah lmao it's kinda silly. Both start at 8 frames, earlier than most parries, but Carian lasts 3 frames longer. This video did frame data testing on all of them. ua-cam.com/video/qOEcWX6cWeo/v-deo.html

You gotta remember that the *only* reason this was so hard was because Wolf's bootleg cousin walf was the protagonist, otherwise this run could easily be finished in 2 minutes
About halfway through the video, wanna mention that Buckler has a unique default skill that you can't find anywhere else. The default skill is called buckler parry, and it's a faster parry than normal small shields.
Thanks for the inspiration! I do a only parry run now as well! Allready got Margit and Loretta. Now I got Calian retaliation and, golden parry, next one is the Tree Sentinel with his great shield!
You can tell a challenge run from a meme run because on meme runs you'll kill Gideon with a silly weapon and on challenge runs you will actually die to Gideon.
Hhhh did every challenge possible and died to the soldier of godrick. Destroyed Sekiro yet died to the mist noble. This is why I love you. You remind us every now and then that you're human just like us.
I don't know who needs this but a great tip for partying, instead of watching the weapon watch the hands, when the starts moving toward you is when you should parry
Carian Retaliation was OP in PvP not only because it scaled with shield level, but also because it had a visual bug that prevented the opponent from dodging it. Also, the little swords only launch when you lock on to something, meaning people could hold on them indifinitely to throw the opponent off. The Erdtree Greatshield's skill damage scaling with its level makes sense because it's not spammable anymore like it was when the game launched.
Aggy, once its finished, are you going to try out the ER Swordsmanship mod? It adds the perfect block mechanic from Sekiro and from what we`ve seen, it works pretty good

He was kidnapped by the Iron Virgin in Raya Lucaria to get to the volcano manor the first time. The door to the shortcut's site of grace is locked from that side, only accessible from the main entrance. There is a grace site deeper in the town, but that runback is FAR more painful.
@@andrewmuir7938 ohhh damn that makes sense
That parry at 55:07 lining up perfectly with the boss music was 🤌
LilAggy working hard to find the most miserable way to beat Elden Ring and I'm here for it.
TIL warming stone heals bosses. Awesome run!
I appreciate the dedication to the Malenia fight!
Mad props for cutting this down an enjoyable viewing time :)
Isn't buckler only better bc it has the "buckler parry" skill? So putting an AoW on it makes it pointless
Yeah buckler parry is what makes it special compared to a normal parry, which does work differently between small shields, medium shields, and parrying weapons. And even then Carian Retaliation is actually just better, works the same on any shield that can use it, has better frame data, and only uses FP if you absorb a spell.
@@Leap623 wait carian has better parry frames?? wtf lmao
@@JakeFish5058 Yeah lmao it's kinda silly. Both start at 8 frames, earlier than most parries, but Carian lasts 3 frames longer. This video did frame data testing on all of them.

I love the edit for this, because it's like 5 seconds of talking about the plan, and then either 2 seconds of the final parry, or like 2 minutes of just a death montage. Someone make a remix of Morgott's "Put these foolish ambitions to rest"
12:12 Aggy is probably the first Tarnished in history to die to those fire snails
You gotta remember that the *only* reason this was so hard was because Wolf's bootleg cousin walf was the protagonist, otherwise this run could easily be finished in 2 minutes
This is one of my favorite videos. Literally every time you can parry something, I will.
It’s fitting that a run about parrying and guard countering ends with you dual wielding shields.
Lol! Ag's incredulity at the warming stone healing Margit was classic! Yeah--it heals anything that's alive. 😂
About halfway through the video, wanna mention that Buckler has a unique default skill that you can't find anywhere else. The default skill is called buckler parry, and it's a faster parry than normal small shields.
“The tutorial boss is actually parryable… okay good” 😂😂😂
Who else is just re-watching these videos because they are waiting for the first dlc to be announced
bro you deserve 10 million subscriber for the content you make. Amount of patience you have is incredible.
Ok so I just saw Sekiro and clicked. Didn't even notice the Elden Ring part lol
“I’m begging you to do a sword attack!”
-immediately dies to a sword attack
Be careful what you wish for I guess.
That selivus shit made me laugh so fucking hard then the chat kept going on about selivus pegging him had me dying
My butt cheeks clenched so fast when you killed godrick without the counter
I don't know who needs this but a great tip for partying, instead of watching the weapon watch the hands, when the starts moving toward you is when you should parry
31:32 well, Retaliation you can hold for basically infinitely after the magic is yoinked.
@@Erick-tv8oq Thank you for putting what I said in a *Much* more well stated and thought out way. XD
Aggy, once its finished, are you going to try out the ER Swordsmanship mod? It adds the perfect block mechanic from Sekiro and from what we`ve seen, it works pretty good
52:04 I think this is the first time I've seen Aggy look genuinely frustrated 😂
The sad thing is that ONGBAL treats parrying Malenia like it’s simple breathing.
Your slow descent into madness throughout this run pleases me. Such content, much wow :)
Parry souls.
Should definitely redo this now that there is the sudden block flask.
Yeah rya is best of the "maidens" like ranni is great but rya is so pure and adorable and wonderful.
53:38 that was an awesome transition
Also, the timing is *incredibly* strict, but you can parry waterfowl dance's very first contact
Him doing the entirety of Seluvis’s quest for essentially like 10 more points of damage is very sadly hilarious
And then him trying to kill him and he disappears and the chat tells him he’s gone upstairs 💀
Can't believe this legend was able to parry soldier of godrick, took me hours to learn his moveset to parry him.
The timer obviously never learned to say no to drugs
RIP LilAggy and him forgetting the Grace right across the bridge he just unlocked in Volcano Manor which gives a short and safe run back to Godskin Noble.
He didnt take that route to volcano manor so the doors were closed
13:28 "that sure is technically possible" is a hell of a quote
this teaches us a very important thing
Dont delay your guard counters
Morgot really put your foolish ambitions to rest
Transition into ThE JokEr babY at 52:10 had me in fucking stitches, ggwp
Also does he play for 24 hours or does he take brakes?
it was multiple streams
"This isnt even about tbe smithing stone anymore. This is about pride"
I felt that in my soul.
