wow dude, i'm a south African and i constantly have to deal with racist white people who try to call all African people stupid by saying we were as illiterate as animals, and that when colonizers invaded and killed us it was merely an act of culling the animal population, which is why they don't feel any remorse at their history of colonization and racism, they feel completely justified in the actions of their ancestors all because they believe the native people had the minds of animals, such videos are important because they are good learning centers for racist white people who cling to that colonial mindset...you have one new subscriber
It's been very hard until the past few years,to get any books on ancient Africa, I have no more than half a dozen. Just shows how much archaeological work has been done. How many more civilisations are out there. How many writing systems are there?
Thank you.. I didnt know about Akan. Just did a research on Akan Symbols.. found out that most of these symbols are in Movies, papers, and Facebook Emoji. WTF!! they rob Africa of her Gold and everything with no credit to her... Messed up!!
Connor Murphy Some of them are direct symbols for words, whilst others as you’ve pointed out represent proverbs. However, the proverbs themselves usually have a theme whether it’s courage, perseverance, patience etc... And so you can link a symbol meant for proverbs straight to direct words
The Akan symbols are not exclusively Akan. Some have been found in Kushitic tombs. See Tony Browder's work in conjunction with the University of Ghana. They also don't represent a script. They are very loaded, very abstract ideograms.

Thanks for this video Hometeam! I've been trying to study this topic. They try to say that all African writing systems resulted from dreams that occurred recently, I of course, do not buy it for a second!
To be clear, the first 3 writing systems mentioned are derived from the same groups of people formally known as the Nilotes (people-of-the-Nile / Nile Valley) who were the first to inhabit the Nile Valley. Nubians, Kushites, Kemetians, and other are not necessarily different in terms of ethnicity. This group of Africans travelled down the Nile River from East Africa to the Nile Valley. Thanks for sharing and including my people on the list!

Greeting HomeTeam History. I am curious on your view of the spread of the Latin alphabet within Africa, coupled with the displacement of many Sub-Saharan scripts. To my knowledge the only major Sub-Saharan script that remains is used is the Horn of Africa region, particularly Ethiopia with the Ge'ez script. I personally see a parallel between this phenomenon in Africa and the displacement of Northern European scripts by the Latin alphabet starting in the 11th to 12th centuries.

In history learning how to read, write and education was reserve for the children of the elite. Ony when the African Moors conquered Spain in the 8 cent CE they make education universal and available to the general population.
You mentioned the veneration of the cattle among the early Nile African cultures and that reminds me of the Aleph, which was the cattle or Ox worshiped by the ancient Egyptians and is the origin of the latter "A" which was adapted by the Israelite peoples and regarded as not just the first latter of their alphabet but also the name of God, it appears in early from Africa, the Middle East and the Levant. The egyptians used an Ox's head to depict the aleph which was later changed to the vulture. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aleph

Really great work again.
