Here's something I used to do - Perform in public but to nobody. Go hang out at a mall or shop or cafe or any public place etc and play around with your cards. Point is just get used to people looking at your hands. Be prepared though in case someone asks to see a trick!

You can't go from being scared to being a super star magician in a heartbeat. No one can do that. But you can start at the beginning and depending how much you want it you will progress. A journey of a thousand miles start with one step. The sooner you start, the sooner you will get there. x

Take some deep breaths to calm you down before you approach anyone and focus on slowing you speech. After enough practice your speech should slow naturally.

The more you practice approaching people the better you will get at it and the easier it will become then your confidence will grow.

Fell the fear and DO IT ANYWAY. It's OK to if you made mistakes as long as you learn from them.

I like going up to people and seeing their reaction to a trick. That's what makes me want to continue to do magic and get better at it. When you impress someone with your trick and they ask you to see more, there is no more excitement you could have. Them asking shows that they enjoy what you did and they think your good at it. Thanks Andy for these tips on how to approach people. I will be sure to use them.

Andy you should demonstrate your theory so they can see how it works. Im saying start a video outside a pub or restaurant then go in and perform, so they can see how you handle rejection etc. in person.

i do it like jarek, approach people ( mostly woman ) ask them how are you what's your name .... and at some point i ask them do they have any hobbies or are they doing something interesting and if they feel comfortable around you they probably will ask the same question to you and you say i'm a magician at that point people get exited and ask you to show them something and i say "a magician never leaves the house without his cards" and show them some powerful tricks and with luck get a nubmer

Great advice Andy! I just started geting into magic and what I've been doing to aproach peolple is just stand in a group of peolple (not making them fealling uncomfortable) and start playing with muy card doing some flourishes, etc so they notice me and ask me (directly or with body language) what I want and then I introduce my self and peform a trick.
PD:Sorry if I made some mistakes, I'm half chilean, half british but I live in chile so I talk sapnish more often than english.

This was some really great advice, but I disagree with one point, where you said "There is no point in performing for friends and family." I agree that people need to branch out from this but family and friends can be a GREAT field to help you feel comfortable in performing certain tricks or help you test out new ones. They are often my most difficult and knowledgeable spectators, but also enjoy the tricks as much as anyone else. All the other advice was really helpful though. Thanks Andy!

    Hi Andy,
Just started getting into magic, specifically card magic, and have been watching a lot of you're videos. Your videos are entertaining and very helpful, and have recently wanted to start practicing in front of random people.
That being said, I loved this video and have to say that it not only gave me some great tips that I want to try, but it also relieved a lot of anxiety I was having about performing in front of strangers.
    Thank you!

Well, I normally do some "freestyle" things with my deck near a group, without looking like I want some attention. So, people comment stuffs like "wow he's damn good!" And I ask them if they want me to show them a trick^^ Thanks for this video, now I can improove my approaching skils. (Sorry, my english is bad, but hey, don't judge, i'm french :) ) Anyway, i love your videos, stay awesome!

Already doing so many time to build your confidence . Oh yes , if you do close up and if you uncomfortable when people look at your eyes , try to look at they're nose or the spot between they're eyes .that help you . and try with one people than later more and more . That's also help to build your confidence . Thanks Andy just try to add more something that I know , hopefully it's help to^.^

I also do magic at the restaurant , ussually before I do magic with strangers I do with couple of my friends first and I asked for they, 're opinions first and I want to see they're expression . With that I can fix or add something or cut some routine if I think to long . I am an easy to nervous person , from my experience if you new for appoach the strangers try to show them some magic tricks that you think the easy one first or the tricks that you

Hi Andy im glad you have took the route of teaching real life situations rather then teaching tricks its great, but besides that i find the best way to approach a group of people is to have a deck of cards out and try and put on your best smile, like your extremely happy just to be in the building (don't look creepy) just happy haha and be very polite and nice always laughing and having a good time and you'll enjoy your performance more i hope someone benefits from this. Love your stuff Andy :)

here is a tip if you are performing in front of strangers pretend like your there friend because if you don't you will just get tense and as Andy said then they get tense and it doesn't work so most likely your trick will fail or be fairly sloppy. Also if you are doing cards to people don't just do the same trick over and over again do some close up effects with coins or something like disappearing things just don't do cards all the time . hope this helps. thanks for the chance Andy

Well, firstly i was performing couple of times to my friends, and yet those were some very easy moves that require very beginners slide of hand, or even more secure tricks that you can't mess up even if there is an earthquake as you said. (haha). Anyway, later i decided that i should break the ice and go out and perform some effect that are little more harder and interesting. In my experience i think if you are fresh into this, the best location to do a trick for someone is in a park. Thank you.

  • @GilvamCarvalho
    @GilvamCarvalho 11 років тому

You've said not to perform to family or friends... well, that's how I started basically. I mean. If you're not confident enough, at least you're with people who wish you well and even if you fail, they will always be there for you. And in a future time, that might even help you build confidence.
On the hand, if it a total stranger, the initial reaction could be so negative that might frustrate the person to continue trying to perform!
of course, my oppinion and I am a BAD magician without PPP

What I usually do, wen doing street magic, is to stand somewhere with people in stasis, such as at a subway station or a McDonalds line. Then I bring our my cards to do some fancy false cuts such as butterfly cutting, sybil cutting or the vernon display.
While doing this, watch the people around you. If anyone is looking at you with interest, just fan the cards, ask them to pick one, and you're in.
Once you've done one trick on a person, someone else will generally come and look, and on it goes.

The invisible deck ! It's the trick I want to buy, I want to perform it =D
Mrs Field I'd like so much to be chosen !
If I can quickly add other advices :
    - If you are more than two magicians, never approach a group with less than the half of your group (they could be scared)
    - Never approach someone from his back
    - Don't start by touching him/her (even on the arm) before saying "Hello"
    - Try to talk with strangers (English is very spoken) even with hands if they don't understand, it's so funny

Andy, something that I found helpful to do was to go to some public place, like a Starbucks or a McDonald's, get a coffee and then just sit down near other people and practice sleights or illusions from my repertoire. This helped me to become more relaxed about performing around other people. And on many occasions, people around me would become interested in what I was doing and would ask if I was a magician. I would ask them if they would like to see something.

Thank you a lot for this video Andy! All Hints'N'Tipes you gave us are really helpful. :)
What I like to do - on the rare occasions I perform to strangers, is simply say hi or how do you do and then I say "The weather is great and I want to show you something interesting"(this maybe sounds funny but, it works). At this point they either say "No, we are not interested." or "Ok what are you going to show us?", now they are asking me so I immediately go into a routine, but a shorter one.

Hi Andy, I am very new to this channel (like 2 day's) and I am already in love with it, your tutorials are amazing, you explain everything the way everyone could understand it. I dont go very offten and preform to strangers becouse i get very nervous, but with that tips I could get better in approaching. I was approaching only 1 person at the time instead of a group i never thought that could explain my fear in doing magic to strangers but now i know thank you. :)

Invisible deck can be messed up, if you do not press on the cards hard enough, if you forget which side is odds, or in my case my homemade ivisible deck lost its rough side :(. But after very little practice it is easy to get right and it amazing everyone! I tend to agree with Andy I only do seldom tricks to family, and after I have mastered them, because if you mess up a trick with a group you lose credibility, you don't want to lose credibility to family, then you can't perform for them anymor

  • @John-marinelli
    @John-marinelli 11 років тому

I agree, having another person there encouraging you or standing nearby when performing is a great way to keep the nerves at ease. I've only performed to strangers on the street a few times and for me the hardest part is making that first step and talking to them. After that is done, the rest pretty much flows on by.
I can see how invaluable performing to strangers is though. It's a great confidence booster, and it really gives you the best feedback on how your doing. Thanks Andy for the advice!

These tips are wonderful, when I was first starting to perform in public I had an unusual situation. I was in medic school in the army and made a new friend who was also into magic, we bounced some ideas around and shared some effects in turn boosting each others' confidence. A magician's most honest critic is another magician. Anyhow, neither of us had performed in public before and we walked around downtown San Antonio, TX and would say thing to each other like "that one?" Or "those guys?"

I usually don't just go around to random people on the street to do magic, I guess that's because I'm 17 though, so i just go around to random groups of people on campus to do one strong trick then just leave, or in restaurants where i see little kids waiting on their food, love interacting with them their reactions are always priceless, plus their parents always thank me because if they aren't entertained by someone/thing they will probably just sit there and ask when their food will come/etc.

In my situation, my lack of confidence in going up to strangers and performing comes from my lack of trust in the tricks that I know to provide the impact I desire. I keep feeling like the tricks I know are too simple and not flashy enough, but the ones I do want to use are ones I don't feel ready to do yet due to a feeling of lack of skill. However, I love your tips on how to properly introduce yourself before anything happens, and I will definitely take those into consideration.

  •  11 років тому

When I learn a new trick, I prefer to perform to my friends first, who are actively looking for flaws and are not afraid to call me on my mistakes. I find it more useful than performing to strangers, who do not usually point out your mistakes.
Also, might I ask how you select random comments? Does UA-cam have a feature for that, or do you simply select a random page in comments and select a random person on that page?

My hands were little bit shaky but not too much. I did the trick well, of course people amazed. After that I was more confident during the tricks. I started to doing harder tricks with more people.

Thanks for the tips Andy.. If it's me I would perform to my family first and if everything goes well. Then, I will perform to my friends. Lastly, I will perform it to strangers in my school. So, it can boost my confidence slowly in certain stage. Waiting for your next video for more tips.

A tip I use when perform is that when there is a big group you need to move around more and not stop because this will help you keep group members from seeing them. Also try to get everyone a part in the trick so none of the people feel left out and may say a negative comment.
    Thanks

For me it's not so easy beacause I don't know how to approach peoples, I usually don't speak with anyone but I think tomorrow I'll try... I'll go with my friend to buy a deck for him and I hope I'll do my best to impress someone. Ohh and thank you Andy. Your speech really motivated me.

I have a few different Bicycle decks and find that it doesn't take long for them to loose their initial slipperiness and start to stick together. Do I need to improve my handling skills so I can cope with this or just keep buying new decks?

Thanks Andy. I find the easy but powerful trick at the start good because you can relax a bit because the people are already going to be impressed. Great advice. Would love to see a video of you going up to people on the streets and performing :)

BIG TIP FOR EVERYONE ! I'm new to magic, but i do play music in front of big audiences, and what helps me the most to get relaxed and calm my nerves, is to breathe really slowely inhaling from the nose, and exhaling from the mouth !

I feel that it's better to start approaching our friends or ppl that we know first and perform magic so as to build up in the confidence and performance. Ultimately as it progress a stranger would really test the magician and by then his ready.

I when i preform on the street first trick is always short to get their attention(for example invisible deck trick), before i depart and say good buys usually preform power trick so they can remember me(like nest of wallets trick).

I usually start with a card force, so I'm sure I won't fail. But still, I'm nervous even if I'm sure of what I'm doing. I think I have difficulties with people more than with the magic, haha!
Thank you Andy, it will help me a lot for the next times. :)

I think the best places to perform is like the fun places such as parks, and those exciting places because I think that they feel comfortable in these places relaxing and having some fun! I hope I get picked and I love your videos! :DDDDD

These are great general tips that will probably help out many a person in the future - much respect for taking the time to help others out Andy!
And that invisible deck would certainly be nice should I be fortunate enough to win! Keep up the great work Andy!

The way I perform is at my local church and practice in front a few people at a time. It took me a while to get to that level of confidence but all I did was say to myself I'm not going to get over my fear of performing without trying to perform for people.

Well, as a beginner magician this helped me a lot... I am not yet at the point, where I can start a channel about it, or really perform to people, becouse I'd like to learn more tricks than I know now, so that Invisible Deck would help as well :P

Thank you for this! I used to have the shaky hand syndrome but I managed to get over it by being myself instead of trying hard to be a fantastic entertainer. Much appreciation for the tips on introducing yourself =)

I would be really happy if I got the deck. I don't like spamming, so I'm going to just hope to be lucky to be chosen by Miss Field. I can't afford a deck of this class, so it would be great to hacve one. Thanks ;) !
