- Wood turning ASMR style a beautiful piece of cherry and putting a copper leaf inside. Its not easy to guild the inside of a hollowform but the sense of light and space that it gives makes it worth it. When the light comes through the window and catches the piece, it just glows with warmth and joy.
I am a woodturner working on the West coast of Ireland. I use wood that I salvage or find or that get blown down in storms, of which we have a lot of. I try to find ways to show the best of each piece of wood that I get. I hope that you enjoy watching how that happens. See this piece and others on my website richardwestwoo...

Thank you for this great video. I'm not a wood turner but I find the art fascinating. My first choice of how to relax after a busy day in town is to watch you create an extraordinary piece. I love the gilt that you apply to the inside. It makes the piece glow! And I'm glad you saved the little branch. Take care, from Oregon, USA.
Thank you Gwynn, there is a lot of joy in taking a old piece of wood and finding the beauty in it, thank you for watching my work
Mi
I’m speechless. This was so cool to watch. It was interesting how I could see your tools on the inside while you thinned it. The polished piece is beautiful and when you added the copper, it gave even more energy to the piece. Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift
Thanks so much Donna, I enjoy working with the metal leaf, it brings so much light to the piece.
All I can say is wow I am totally floored in how beautiful the finished product looks and I am dumbfounded in the craftsmanship it took to make!
Thank you Timothy I've been doing a lot of work the last few years on combining the wood and metal leaf, glad you like the result.
Every time I think I've seen the most creative piece of woodworking art, along comes something new and even MORE amazing 🤩
Thank you Lisa, it's a nice piece and really glows when the sun hits it through the window, if you like this then have a look at some of my other videos
Another lovely piece, Richard. The foil inside is always a beautiful touch. I'm pleased to see the silver fork/rake again, I thought it might have been lost in the wood shavings. Keep turning, your work is so unique.
Thank you, in fact it's a back scratcher from the pound shop but works great, thanks for watching
Great projects 👍
Thank you
Love the copper on the inside! I also have a half open piece that I want to decorate the inside or paint it mat black. Very nice work Richard!
Thank you, it's fun to work with the metallic leaf but you need to seal the inside well, I put 5 coats of shellac before the leaf
Wow lots of works and skills to do this excellent project 👍. Well done and I enjoyed watching this video.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching the video.

wow, that's fabulous. the gold leaf inside was a surprise to me: a beautiful surprise. A work of art.
Thank you, I love useing all kinds of metallic leaf.
Thanks for your video.
Special thanks for showing the progress..... actual wip by pausing and slow motion shots of what's happening as you turn.
Much appreciated. as I am now learning to turn bowls.
Thanks you
Thank you Gunness, I always like to put a couple of slow mo shots in, I'm glad you enjoy them
WELL DONE Richard... Another masterpiece..! I loved the fact you saved the branch, I was afraid it was lost..
Thanks, it worked out well that one, cherry can crack a lot so I was Lucky.
Gorgeous! And I appreciate the slow-mo so we can see in detail what is really going on.
Thanks Grandma, I like to put in a few slow-mo bits to show how the gouge cuts, thanks for watching

Thank you, I do support Ukraine.
I had no idea what you were doing but I guess the master knows more than anything that was a nice creation better yet it was a unique creation thank you
Thanks Loinnie, to be honest I wasn't too sure where I was going ether, but I think I got there.
Magnificent work. I’ve never before seen anyone use this technique.
Thank you, I haven't ether but I have seen some people use gold leaf.
Marvellous! Absolutely marvellous! This is what I call down right genuine skills.
Wonderful talent and artistry. It would be so easy to accidentally ruin it at the end, but you got it perfectly thin without going too far. And the copper gilding is lovely too.
Thank you Nick, the copper leaf brings a lovely glow to the inside.
That was really nice. Do you have to put any sealant on top of the copper inlay? Thanks!
Thanks Mark, ya you have to seal all the metallic leaf except for 23 carat gold, they all tarnish a bit with time. Thanks for watching
Incredible work! Where did u bought the lathe? How much Power do such lathe Nerds for working with this hard wood? Thank you very much...
It's a leguna 18-36 lathe 2 HP .thanks for watching
Hermosa obra de arte!!!!💖💖💖
🙏🙏🙏🙂
I’m not a woodturner, but I am trying to learn. Did you design the piece that size? Could you have turned the wood on a different axis to get a larger finished product? Was there something in the grain that inspired you to turn the wood in this axis?
I chose to turn the wood this way as it emphasized the aspects of the wood I liked also gave me a good place to hold the wood while hollowing and that the structural integrity of the piece is good, but mainly because it looks good. Lots to think about in just putting the wood on the lathe.
Really nice. Personally I would have liked the final peice to contain some bark - around 2:55, if you left it at that would have been perfect. But great work.
Thanks, it's always hard wether to leave bark on, if the wood is very green I leave it on but that cherry the bark tends to come off so I take it off

Joy to see such beautyful thing.
Thank you😊

Thank you, its always nice when someone understands the time and work it takes to do craft.
thank you so much for your views, so happy that you took the time to comment, it helps me so much with the algorithm, thank you
OK. And what is it? Lamp? A lemming container? What is the purpose of this thing?
It has no purpose, which makes it all the more beautiful,😊👍
hello friends greetings healthy and successful always. thank you for sharing knowledge and always faithfully watching your latest stuff I like your ideas👍👍
Thank you for your support always, hope your keeping well
Don't see the point or the art on it,you turn a piece of wood into what and waisted copper paper for a wooden broken ball, waist of time 😊
Thank you so glad you took the time to watch and not enjoy my video, maby if you want you could watch the next one you might not enjoy that ether, and please let me know, 🙏🙏🙏
Sorry but the translation on my phone won't work for your comment but thank you for commenting
Sometimes your woodturning objects are real excentric... but totaly stunning!!! Abslutley great!!!
And this combination wood vs copper is real lovely!!! 😍🤩😍👍
Thank you
Sorry but I can't translate your comment
Beautiful piece of cherry wood, cherry is one of my favourite hard woods; also the copper inside added more beauty to the abstract shape, what a beautiful piece of wood turning , well done that man , Chris from Derby, ENGLAND 2024,Feb
Thanks Chris, I often use metallic leaf to gild the inside of my pieces, I love the way it brings light in, and changes how you see the outside.
😳😳😳😍😍😍😍😍✊✊❤️🌏❤️👍👍👍👍
🙏🙏🙏🙏😊😊👍👍👍
that sounds fun I don't know it
Nice. I think this is the first turned project I've watched that's actually art. Well done.
Thank you, if you liked it there are many more projects on my channel that you might enjoy.😊
thanks, glad you like it
Wowza! That is magnificent! It went from the ugly duckling to the grandiose masterpiece all because of the way you turned! You are very talented. The copper inside brought it above the rest!
Thanks Mary, the copper leaf really makes it,
Great Job! Earned a sub with that one. Really like the copper leaf finish inside.. Monty - woodturner from Texas
Thank you, I use a lot of different metallic leaf inside my pieces, hope you enjoy the other videos
Nice woodwork.
Thank you for sharing the video.
Have a nice day~~
Thanks 🙏🙏
Haha...i wont say anything just check my profile picture...... Nice work
Glad you like it, I can't really see your profile pic, but it looks like a guilded piece, is that right?
@@RichardWestWoodturner its an floor lamp with wood and inside has gold leafs plated
That sounds cool, I love working with different colored meatal leaf,
Absolutely stunning piece and very unique. Really dig the copper leaf, great idea and worked out incredibly well. Just great art work.
Thanks Jay, I think the copper works well, even if it's a bit tricky to do.👍
Outstanding work. Always hated the interrupted turning . Too many frights when it dug in. Spectacular use of the foil.
Thank you, the metal leaf brings so much light and space to the inside, Thanks for watching
It turns apearance of everything you put there it to copper as well.
Thank you, the copper brings warm light into the piece.
A lovely piece of work well done. Personally I'd prefer it without the copper lining though , I think that plain polished wood would look far nicer. Each to his own however.
Thanks Tony, your right the wood on its own is probably enough, but I love the way the copper leaf brings a warmth and light into the piece,
I was wondering why you do not talk. It is a great piece but I have no idea what wood it is or what you put inside it. So it is all a guess and a waste of time watching what could have been a very good video.
Well , the title is cherry,, as in cherry wood,, with copper inside,, as in copper leaf, also there is a description under the title which describes the video,, so don't need to talk, thanks for watching,🙂
Which tool did you use for hollowing? It looks as if you're cutting on the back side of the interior but the lathe is spinning forward. That confuses me.
I used the crown revolution hollowing tool which I find good and I do all my hollowing in reverse, I just find it easier than reaching over the lathe. Thanks for watching
I'd like to see someone cast all the curls in polymer and turn that.
I don't do resin work but it might look good, thanks for watching.
Wow what a great combination. Copper and cherry word wow to my favorite things together in such a beautifully shaped vessel just so gorgeous.
Thank you, I love the combination of metal leaf and wood.🙏😊
Thanks 🙏🙏🙏👍
I liked it more without the copper
Thank you Hanz, I think the copper brings a lot of light into the piece
Beautiful work. What is the tool you use for the hollowing
Thank you David, it's the crown revolution hollower
A SCENTED FAT CANDLE WOULD EXPLODE THE GLOW OUT OF THIS PIECE
Maby, might go up in flames too.
Oh. You should put one of those frameless lights in there. I bet the glow would be amazing.
Thanks, I'll think about it
Small candle will give it movement and more texture.
Thanks Paul, I would be a bit concerned that it might burn and the smoke might tarnish the copper
Items like this are a bit beyond my talent but it gives me a point to get to. Amazing work!!!
Thank you Bob, glad you enjoyed it.
Richard, another lovely piece well done. I would like to know how freshly cut this wood was, it looked like is was rather wet.keep turning, looking forward to your next video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks James, the wood was fairly wet but if you turn it thin it drys quick although cherry can crack a bit so fingers crossed, Thanks for watching
Thank You Richard....I just ran into this video and am impressed to say the least!!! I have subscribed and liked and I will slooooowly go through all your videos. I very much enjoyed the micro thin walls, gold leaf, your polishing and of course the skill you used to accomplish it all....All the way from California......TM
Thank you Tuffy, really glad you enjoyed the video, there are a good few other's on the channel, hope you like them too, let me know.
Its very beautiful video friend good luck be safe
Thank you
Stunning... Beautiful. Thanx for sharing your process. ✌️😎👍
Thank you, really appreciate it, 🙏🙏🙏😊
what is that hollowing tool what you used? great work with that video👌
Thanks Jarkko, I'm useing the crown revolution hollowing tool, it's a good tool and works ok, glad you enjoyed the video and Thanks for watching
thank you glad that you enjoyed it.

Thanks 👍👍👍
QUE JOYA MAS HERMOSA, NO PARECE SALIDA DE LAS MANOS DE UN HOMBRE. ❤❤❤
GRACIAS POR TANTA BELLEZA.😊😊😊
Thank you, the copper and wood work well together.
I'm wondering how copper and birch would be for knife handles
They go well together but the copper leaf would be too fragile unless you coated it with resin, or you could use copper power mixed with resin, thanks for watching
I wish I knew how to do this. I would love be to make a whole pd globe with copper continents would look awesome
It's not so hard, start small and bit by bit you get a feel for it, there is so much info on the net you can work it out
@@RichardWestWoodturner well considering I don't have a lathe or any of the tools it's pretty hard. Lol. But I would want to melt copper down. Hollow out a wood sphere like that and cut the continents out in best detail possible. N then fill the inside with copper till full and the continent shapes are all full of copper . When done. Turn it so it's perfect n polish. It would take some work but look amazing if was a dark cherry or some dark wood like that .
That's quite good all it needs is a small light in there to show the real beauty of it, well done.
Thanks
That looks freaking awesome. I could totally see someone replicating that but making it into a bedside lantern light or festive holiday decoration. Great job!
Thank you, it is a bit festive alright.
Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing. GBU
Thanks for watching
Thank you Razvan, glad you like it
Looks really beautiful. However, what is it exactly for?
Thank you, it's exactly for nothing it just is and looks good doing it, and sometimes when people see it it makes them feel good too, which makes it really important.
Your work is fine and thought out obviously! I find it very fascinating to watch you turn a chunk of wood into something so awesome! It is so relaxing to watch you create something no matter what it is. Keep it coming and thank you for the entertainment!
Thank you Rita, I don't always know how things will turn out but it's the getting there that's fun.
Add a little dish inside with a small candle and that would really POP!
Thank you call, but it is wood and it might burn.
I enjoyed the slo-mo segments. Iccasionally it's nice to see that detail.
Thanks it's fun to add a bit of slow mo every now and then just to show how the tool is cutting the wood. Thanks for watching
Wow! Amazingly difficult hollowing and then a great idea with the copper leaf!
Thank you, I've been useing a lot of metallic leaf on the inside of pieces in the last few years I think it works well.
Beautiful ! Where dose one obtain copper foil like that, please !
Thanks Albert, you can get it online, there might be a place near you, Google guilding supplies, sand and seal the wood well, I put multiple coats of shellac. Thanks for watching
Beautiful work. Thanks for posting. 👍👏👏🏴
Thanks for watching Frank.
takes the concept of 'firewood' to great and unseen heights,,,, great job

NIcely done RIchard, Beautiful piece
Thank you Buster, very happy with the way it came out.
i could imagine some bright led lights inside of it
Thanks Juan when the sun comes through the window it lights up the piece beautifully.
That took some serious patience!! Very nice!!
Thank you Scott, it took a while but was worth it
🔥🔥🔥
😊😊😊
Why in the world do they not wear gloves? I hope they have on a mask and eye protection!
Thanks for watching, I don't wear gloves as it can be too dangerous if they catch on the wood you could lose a hand or worse, I do wear eye and dust protection.
@@RichardWestWoodturner Great! I didn't realize that could happen. Thanks for sharing.
No prob, thanks for watching
Absolutely amazing piece of work 👌👌👌😊
