I have only one complain in your reasons. You said IOI wants the OASIS for ads......ok. What if they could get trillions of dollars and the whole game in their hands to keep making profits? Would that maybe create more money than the ads ?!? Oh wait, they do get all these stuff IF they win the game. Big companies commit terrible crimes even for some hundreds of thousands..here we talk about non stop trillions.

I enjoyed the book far better. But I get that they had to change things for the masses and also to keep the running time within reason.

Love the book and the movie. The movie captures the spirit of the book, can crunches down what could almost be a trilogy or HBO miniseries into something that can be seen in a single sitting.
As with any book to movie adaptation, a lot had to be thinned out to make things fit in the time available. Hours of playing a video game, for example, would not had made for a good movie. Likewise, showing large chunks of other movies, assuming WB could have gotten the rights to use them.
In cleaning things up for a more child friendly movie vs the book... Wade's Aunt only took him in for the extra food stamps, which she didn't share with him. He supported himself by scrounging, recycling, and fixing up whatever he could for sale, barter, or hire. Aunt and boyfriend would take things from him to sell for drug money if he wasn't careful. Their trailer in the stacks had two other families in it with them.
Changes made that not mentioned in this video... (spoilers)
Clue leads to key location, with rules to be followed to getting to the key. The key comes with a clue to the location of a gate. Opening and entering a gate brings another challenge. Pass that challenge to get the next clue.
After using the cataclast bomb, IOI had Sixers a safe distance away they could send in to try to win.
IOI used hacked terminals, so each Sixer in the game was actually a team of IOI employees, in addition to the researchers feeding them information.
Art3mis in the book lives with her parents, until warned by Wade to run for her life. She was never captured by IOI
Wade infiltrated IOI, learned that IOI had killed Daito, got evidence of that murder, the bombing of the stacks, and the plan to kill Ache, Sho, and Art3mis. He also set things into motion to bring down the shield.
Sorry, in the book Art3mis is the girl in the fridge. A motivator for the hero, but not as prominent as in the movie.
And those are just some of the big points. If you liked the movie, I recommend you read the book. If you haven't seen the movie yet, go see it.

I like both, but I prefer the book because of all the 80's pop references. Like Halliday, and Ernest Cline, I grew up in the 80's and remember the time fondly.
The only thing I didn't like about the book was the horrendous amount of world building that the author felt necessary to put in there. Honestly, I thought he was setting up for a trilogy of books with the first one revolving around finding the Copper Key and clearing the first gate.
My favorite thing about the movie was Wade driving the Delorian: it was described in detail in the book but was never used other than to bring Parzival to the Distracted Globe, and I was giddy when watching Parzival and Art3mis hanging out the gull-wing doors firing various weapons.
Least favorite was the romantic b-plot: in the book their relationship was purely cerebral, and they never met in person until the very end and leaves the reader hoping it works out between them, while in the movie Wade and Samantha were working together and living in the same shanty and at the end are shacking up together.

I dont know why every reviwer says that the book was ok or was crap, i quite enjoyed the book. The movie tries to cover too much in such a litle amount of time, i think it just tried too hard to thrown i as many easter eggs as possible. The movie is good, but like anyone who reads the original material of a movie could tell ya, the books is almost always better.

    • @netkr0

i beg to differ, i rather enjoyed the movie than the book, as the movie is a light hearted adventure Spielberg style with most of the thing that are good about Ready Player One book are made better.
I agree it is a condensed version of the book, but Spielberg changes made the movie work and entertaining.

    • @Soaches

One thing that ruined it for me was already in the beginning when the gate to the car race was found by "a random gunter who no one remembers". It both destroys the thrill of Wade connecting the clues himself, but also that any people who made any progress in the hunt in the book got famous. Also that no one in like six years tried to back their car. Gamers are known for testing every single little thing to discover easter eggs or quicker routes for speedrunning. The possiblity of billions of people not once trying to back up at the start of the race for six years is pretty minimal.

    • @big7588
      @big7588 6 років тому +1

My friend also brought up the the race secret as a complaint. As a gamer myself, yes I look what happens if you go the other way, or look for shortcuts, side areas, etc. For the sake of supporting the movie, we can just assume that anybody else just didn't do it right. The turned their car around, the got out and walked, or just went too slow to trigger the door coded for "Just go backwards. Backwards, as fast as we can."

I saw the movie first, and really enjoyed it. But when I read the book, I was blown away. I was a teenager in the 80's so I could completely relate to the story, from Hallidays point of view.

I definitely preferred the book. Partly because I understood the majority of the references and mainly reason number 5. The movie was definitely a watered down version to appeal to casual fans and in the process lost it's gritty and authentic feel.

    • @RennieAsh
      @RennieAsh 6 років тому

It was also a modernised version appealing to newer gamers. Ironically, some older people may not "get" all those newer references ;p

I've just finished the book and I too liked it's gritty and authentic feel. I knew only very few of the game references, none of the music and most of the movie ones, but not getting references didn't bother me. I'd not heard of the film, or the book until a few days ago. I think the main thing in the book is who controls the internet and if that isn't in the movie, then the movie is a sham.

The book was an homage to geeks in general and 80’s nostalgia specifically. It was a love letter to that era. The audience for the book was for people who either grew up in the 80’s or are gamers and love the history. The movie ignored what made the book warm, familiar and magical. The love Halliday had for all things 80’s, the reason why 80’s lore was such a big part of the world, why Wade was the one to win the contest were all missing. In the movie, there was nothing special about him. In the book, he was a treasure trove of 80’s trivia, and an old school gamer. Heck, in the movie, they never even explain what “Ready Player One” even references. I loved the book and found the movie a cold, CGI mess. What a disappointment.

      @veilen 6 років тому +1

Did we watch the same video? At which point did she bash the book? Do you mean the slight critique she gave at one point or two? So now any critique is bashing? Come on.
I for once found her review pretty good. It's the first one in which someone finally saw the parallel with our own times in which net neutrality is dismantled and corporate control over everything reaches the new high. This is sorely missed from the movie made by, surprise, surprise, a greedy corporation.
I found the movie to be like Sorento himself, pretending to be hip and cool by using all those references that mean completely nothing to him. The movie is a husk made for the purpose of making money. No depth, no message or laughable message at best.

I was a little disappointed with how they put everyone in the same city and added the weird super evil chick in IOI. Also its kind of hard to process that they're all beautiful and want to work together when the book was very direct in saying it was absolutely not the case. You could say it was hollywood and yeah theyll be beautiful but they could have picked people less attractive.. Idk. Obviously for copyright reasons they couldn't use everything they wanted in the book though. Would rather it was more on point to the book but they threw out Kline's original script for being too similar so.

There were a couple of things the movie did better-Wade wasn’t so much of a Mary Sue and Artemis actually got to significant things to advance the plot. Also, the movie draws out Halliday’s story more clearly. I really feel that Halliday is the heart of the story in the book but a lot of readers seem to miss that, so I was grateful the movie pulled it out and focused on it. But you are right, all the things you mentioned are better in the book. Spielberg glossed over the darker elements, which eliminated the high stakes, which then made it difficult to care that much about the protagonists. I don’t mind the changes to the contest itself, although I think many of the challenges could have been made cinematic without changing them completely. What disappoints me is that you come away feeling very “meh” about the High Five. The Halliday stuff was moving, and I liked the increased involvement of Artemis but...for the most part, it was all so rushed that there was no way to invest in who they were, or what they meant to each other, or what it meant to them to be Gunters, let alone how meaningful their success was. It wasn’t a terrible movie, but given that it was Spielberg I expected better.

It missed out Wade's great monologue explaining his worldview and education, although I can see why they'd avoid scaring the American movie audience but it detracted from Wade's character and made him two dimensional.
The book was fun and fast paced. So was the film. As long as you don't over-analyze them you get what they were intended to be: simple entertainment.

Spot on with point 5! I didn't like how much that Wade did in the book was switched to Art3mis in the movie. It ended up making Wade's character not as strong or clever. Like sneaking into IOS. He really had to plan that Trojan Horse move, & he did it knowing the risks, & that the others would not have backed it. It would be like Hermione triumph over Lord Voldemort & the Death Eaters, & Harry watches in awe at her mad skills in HP. Or Peeta brings down the Hunger Games system, & eliminate Coin in HG, while Katniss watches from the sideline, cheering him on. It made Wade less of a hero in the movie, & more of a sidekick.

I watch movies to watch crazy ideas being brought to the screen. So instead of questioning why a character did something or how convenience it was that something good happened to that character. I just get immersed in all the fun. I don’t question why the corporate in the movie was so determined to get the egg, I just saw it as a man who will do anything to help his company.

The video was good and I agreed with most of the points made but I think the point of the book went over the reviewers head. The book was meant to be one big reference and love letter to the 80s and geek culture. Not only that but the creator of the in universe contest Halliday deliberately made the contest one big reference to the 80s because he grew up in that decade and was mostly obsessed with it and escaping reality he had no love for most of the real world and built the oasis to escape. The Contest was so ingrained in the 80s and Halliday’s favorite things that it not only brought 80s style back but it also forced people to study old tv shows, movies, games, etc so they could find clues for the hunt.

I enjoyed the book but utterly loved the movie(with some bias to the movie for not murdering my favourite character) but there was definitely areas the movie could have improved on by simply applying more attention to detail when making the book into a movie, but that’s just me

yeah. Book vs. Movie. I enjoyed them both. I like to reference "Dune" or "The Hunt for Red October" where the movies were different from the books .. but 2+ hr. movies vs. 300+ page books. You didn't mention, in RP1, that towards the end, it's Wade that infiltrates IOI at Great personal risk. And that he and Samantha don't meet each other in person till the very end. The movie had a Japanese and Chinese (American) actor to cater to those demographics. And in the book, Xo or sho does get thrown off a building .. but this leads into Wades intricate way to get captured and infiltrate IOI. 2 different Mediums .... I enjoyed them both !

Movie was entertaining. Though, like is always said. the book as better. In this case to many things were changed. I understand the need to empower certain people, groups, or races. Hollywood is taking it to extreme and wrecking many good stories. You can switch things around to make the right message and maintain the story.

The villain changes are more relevant to modern gaming problems like micro transactions. So many modern games are being tarnished and The Oasis being the ultimate dream game, it would be a travesty if it happened to that, which is why Wade was able to raise an army so easily. We see how much it affects their income and lives as well, so it’s important for the real world too. People would become corporate slaves and lose everything. I like how the book is closer to net neutrality, but the movie is just as fine/relevant. It’s actually cool that we got both in a way.

  • @machicommentsection

I have to disagree. I actually enjoyed the movie more than the book.
Don't get me wrong, I love the book and it is amazing. You all should read it.
What's kinda disappointing with the movie however is they failed to convey some of the greatest fantasies I had while reading the book.
Imagine that we only got Mechagodzilla vs Gundam when there should be Voltron, Ultraman and other amazing robot series created.
Yes there maybe scenes in the movie where they got amazing tech and stuffs but we should all know that almost all the transactions done to purchase are done in the OASIS (when Wade purchased the X1 using his OASIS account, plus pizzas being delivered via drone).
There is also the VR outdoor experience. You can actually forgive them for not making any logical sense if the players are playing this outside and are "running" for real. That's what I also thought the first time I watched it but thinking deeper about it it made me realize a poetic artistry by using visuals. The movie showed the passion and how engrossed each people in the world on this virtual reality. In short it doesn't need to make sense, you just need to appreciate how the Avatars relate to their users.
As for the apocalypse and shortage of gas, the movie hinted on it by showing very little cars running and more cars being dumped because there is no longer any use for them without gas so how is that?
For the extra life. Damn it should be obvious that it would bore the general viewers to death just by watching a kid play pacman. So to make people relate to Halliday better. You should also consider the time constraint. It's a movie for fuck sake. You have to consider the budget too! The movie actually did a very great job of getting us hooked to the challenges each of the players have to face to get the Keys.
And I think they pretty much conveyed in the movie how Gunters hated IOI.
Overall I will give Ready Player One 9/10 rating.

I can not compare the movie with the book because I have never read it but I disagree with all the people that say that the movie was generally dissapointing. The audiovisual was amazing, the idea of the movie/book is generally hype and the developement of the characters and the plot was at least smooth and straight with no cuts and flashes to the future/past and fastforwards etc etc. The only one problem in the movie are the people that play outside with the oasis. I could understand that having lets say a controller in hand could solve the problem of the movements and you could just use the headset only to see/hear, but if we see them running (the famous spartans) ON A STREET / parallel in the game too then someone will get run over a car, collide with each other and fall on walls.

What's not to like about the movie? I see it with expectation on more like seeing avengers movie rather than let say lord of the ring, it's fun, funny, exciting, and like you say non life threatening to the main characters.. I mean, I would love to see what the book tells but with the overwhelmingly abundant pop culture icons (that is not including disney properties unfortunately), i would be lying if I disappointed by it. It brings joy to me to see those easter eggs cameos in the backgrounds like spotting blanka, lara croft, beetle juice, etc and able to identify them, also when few of them are in the spotlight like GunFckinDam, iron giant, the shinning parts, how could you not excited? My only guess on why spielberg didnt make the movie more "rough" like the book is probably to cater wider audiences thats why theres reference like minecraft

*Why is this video game movie so controversial* reasons would be the Director behind the camera is a genius. Using a game based movie which is by far so different from the book. to target game lovers which in today's world is what all teens do. Instead of watching somebody play a game. Why not watch a movie of somebody play a game in a virtual reality world. #Genius... Well played ma dude

Really disappointed in the movie. Especially how American movies ALWAYS, with like no exception, need to have (a) a car chase, (b) a martial arts scene - because obviously everyone know MA, and (c) final resolution using GUNS. Yes, GUNS. As if everything evolved, we have the oasis, flying killer drones.. but people still shoot guns like in the 1930s. So cliche.
There are also more focus on the love scene. And the ending, where in the book they end up in Canada, that part is totally missing.
I would love to read the book a 3rd time.

i read the book...and unlike Jaws..and sadly, more like Jurassic Park..Spielberg really makes the story tamer, duller and kinda DUMB for the movie audience. Both RPO and JP books are rich and just more exciting as a whole..they're COMPLETE and detailed stories.
The movies....not so much. i even feel at times that i was watching a YA adaptation while watching RPO the movie...Divergent, Hungry Games, Twilight, etc...and this is supposed to be a STEVEN SPIELBERG FILM.
i read the book..and really like it, even though i'm NOT a video game or VR guy... but unlike the movie..the book actually got me to understand and be IMMERSED into the world Ernest Cline creates and really enjoying the ride, while at the same time really getting what's going on..and the stakes of it all.
another adaptation by Spielberg i just thought of that let me down...Tintin...comic book series i grew up with... twas okay..not bad at all...but overall, it's just not as engaging as it SHOULD be. for a Tintin movie..AND a Spielberg action-adventure movie...
i hope, Spielberg doesn't do any more book adaptation, unless it's something like Schindler's List or anything serious like it. Let's see more E.T.s or Raiders of the Lost Arks-TYPE of movies... speaking of which..i don't think I WANT to see another Indiana Jones movie with a 70 something year old Harrison Ford in the title role.... oh well....
