I bought a set of these carbs for my Dads 78 T140v. He said the bike never ran correctly since new. It’s been rebuilt with the same stock carbs and never ran correctly after countless mechanics having their grubby hands all over the bike. Well I bought a set of these and the bike runs Amazing! Starts on the First or 2nd kick Everytime. These carbs are AMAZING. Thank you for selling these and making my Dads eyes and ears light up every time I start the bike and we go ride.
As a newbie to these carbs (but having worked on SU types) Your Video is brilliant ! I am so glad I found it !! Bloody good info delivered in a relaxed manner with out annoying music! great Job! I have a T140v 1976 - now I am inspired to taclkle a twin set up Many thanks
I have to say these Triumph/Amal videos from Lowbrow Customs really are excellent; so informative and easy to follow. Thanks so much for taking the time to make and upload them. Greetings from the UK! 😀👍🏻🏍✊🏻
Thanks guys for the Triumph based videos! Just bought my 1st Triumph chopper and your parts, wiring diagrams, and video tutorials are a great resource!
Thumb's up from me. Thanks for taking the time to get this up here. What with all the elderly British iron I've nursed along over the years I could probably disassemble and reassemble a Concentric blindfolded, but I still enjoyed this and even learned a few things. Thanks again!
This is a great video - really well paced, with ample opportunity to see the things being discussed, and very knowledgable input. I'll be replacing the throttle cable on my A65 Thunderbolt this weekend , and the video is very helpful. Also great to see the carb taken apart and explained . Thank you. Lee (UK)
Boy it would be nice if you guys made a video using the pamphlet that comes with the carbs and explain its contents. I dont know if my brain goes to another planet when I see that thing but I need a tutorial on that pamphlet!
Thanx. This carb rebuild video enabled me to change out the EFI (safety logic sucks) on my Royal Enfield Classic Bullet 500, to an Amal carb with a kit from Hinckley's. Before I found this video, I had tried another one that caused me nuthin' but grief. After your instruction, it started up 1st try.
This 'older dog' learned a few things here as my old Amal had been 'sticking'..so I took it apart and cleaned it good etc. but same problem. Sanded the slide and carb body to make it pretty decent but still sticking problem. Checked the cable and it's frayed and bent, soo. Been riding Triumph since 1970 but had a factory trained expert mechanic and friend doing the tedious stuff for me all those years so I could just 'ride.' Well, he passed away here in Rhode Island this year and is sorely missed; now, I have to learn to do stuff that I was too lazy to do myself or lacked confidence in..this is one much needed video for my '72 TR6. Just got a new throttle cable (didn't know there were two types of cable ends for the same part number or that the carb top could go in both directions!). Bike is otherwise in excellent shape (high output alternator, halogen headlight, Boyer ignition, hagon shocks) thanks to my old friend, but now it's time for my PTSD to be tested and try hard to concentrate! Thanks much, Todd, for this video..will keep your shop in mind in case I actually determine I need a new carb afterall.
I had to post this. I had popping from my port side exhaust. My fix was to pull idle mixture screw and squirt carb cleaner through til it came out front of carb. I couldnt believe it fixed it totally! Crack the throttle and she goes right off,no hesitating or pop!! Try easiest first right?
Really helpful thank you . I bought one of these for my 500 bullet and while having worked on bikes for many years your film reassured me of my knowledge .... really fantastic.... you helped a Brit feel ready to enter is workshop
I've got one of those 50 year old carburetors on my 1971 Triumph and it runs like a dream. I've also got a pair on a 1972 Triumph and I'm having some problems with them.
I really enjoyed the video and the relaxed way you have shown us the way to strip the carb "But One very big piece of info you did not mention was regarding the (Banjo fuel pipe nut connection ) that if done wrong can cause one hell of a problem, if you look at the "nut" you'll see as shown on the video it has the hole were the fuel enters the carb from the fuel tank !!!!! Now if you do not make sure the Banjo nut's hole is in line with the fuel intake pipe !!!!! you will not get a full fuel supply, Tip mark your nut with a marker pen (or mark lightly with a hack saw) from the top to bottom of the nut when it is in line with the fuel pipe, by doing this you will always have a nice clean fuel supply through the Banjo if the line is in line top to bottom of the pipe inlet.
These videos are so cool! Thanks to all the staff at LBC! Any chance you could make one on how to setup and tune a 930 dual carb setup? Thank you again!
We will take that into consideration , all of the new Amals we stock will come with a comprehensive tuning guide which can also be found on the official Amal website. Cheers
Just bought a set of carb’s a year ago. Hasn’t been on the road yet, but just wondering. One of the ticklers is leaking constant fuel out the hole. Any suggestions.
Just purchased a barn Find 1972 Triumph Bonneville T - 120 and it has these Amal carburetors on them. In your video it says that if there is two Amal carburetors on that you should put it so that there's a plunger type deal on the sides of the carburetor. The one I bought has one on the left side of the engine but not on the right side. Should I make sure that both are the same carburetor?
I didn't see the Clip - throttle needle, being placed into the carbureator, it was already inside the carbureator body during the video. I saw the Throttle needle being dropped into the carbureator, but didn't see where it was attached to the clip. Without the throttle needle being attached to the clip wouldn't it be loose inside the carbureator...?
Would this carb work good on a honda 500cc engine yes i understand its not factory it would be for a custom job finding factory carbs are really expensive
Hello sir, i just fitted an amal 376 carburettor. After kick starting, the motorcycle went into high idling. It sounded like it does when we pull back on full throttle. Is it because i of the throttle cable? Please guide.
Hi great video would have been good if you had explained why you dispensed with the choke arrangement Amal fitted and maybe a short description on how the Carburettor works. i.e. Venturi etc.
Keep in mind the technique demonstrated for changing a jet with the bowl in place has to be accomplished with carburetor off the bike. If intending to change the jet with the carb mounted, you will have to remove the bowl in order to access the jet with a wrench. There's not enough room to remove the jet, through the access plug at the bottom, with the carb mounted on the engine.
dual carb cable. we sell this one. theres probably more out there, ya just gotta dig a little. www.lowbrowcustoms.com/products/british-standard-throttle-cable-with-splitter-assembly-triumph-t120-t140-1970-78-oem-60-7002
Hello sir, i have installed a monobloc 376 on my royal enfield 1968. The problem is it is emitting black smoke from the exhaust and also, when i increase the rev/throttle, it does not go into high idle. Please advice. I am unable to find any solution. Thankyou :)
I have a Mk1 Amal carb on my Bantam Trials bike. This is an excellent video as these carbs are new to me. However, why remove the choke? The air slide has been removed on mine also but I'd like to know why?
Thanks I have one of these loosely assembled on a Ducati 250. Brilliant video which has made things a lot clearer. But what about the choke cable set up?
I thought the same, a lot of old British bikes just rely on the tickler however you need to cap the cable hole if not using the choke slide as its another inlet for air
one thing that i'm curious about, is the 3rd adjustment screw. You have the idle screw and mix screw on one side, but there's another screw on the other side (inside). Its a phillips head instead of the other 2 being flat head
That's the removable pilot jet on the new Amal Premieres. It comes out with a flat head like the others, but it has two slotted lines (that cross each other) so maybe you could use a phillips's head on it as well. No adjustment needed, you just screw it in.
Just purchased a 1974 T140 Bonny and am rebuilding the carbs. Loved this video but have a question about why you remove the choke? I live in Washington State where it’s a bit cold in the am , will the bike still start in cold weather without the choke?
hello, I need the clutch cover for my BSA Rocket 3 A75, #19-7801 or 57-3705, can you supply it? what's the price? can new or used; do you know who can sell it? . THANK YOU
Great Vid Todd! I am about to get my first classic bike...'73 Commando. Will be needing to perform carb work to get her road worthy and this vid will be very helpful. The bike does use dual carbs and there is a cable splitter at the carb end. Can you cover how to properly balance such a dual carb setup? Thanks.
what size main jet is ideal for a single carb, dual manifold application on a 500 daytona?....how many turns out for the air fuel mixture and idle screw?...thanks kindly
I've had my T140V for 28 years and I never use the choke to start it, although I have left all the components in place. All you need for a cold start is to tickle both carbs and it will start and run straight away
This professor is even a comedian hilarious don't let the metal giblets get into the carburetor you really don't want that in there LOL great video very insightful
Hi I am Kumar I have just fitted new carb ( Amal mk1 concentric 26mm) and pod filter looks same as one that picture above on my bike ( 1984 Royal Enfield 350cc ) I have few questions to ask if you don’t mind and I guess as you are using Amal carb you would be able to clarify my doubt my questions are followe 1 I don’t find any difference of using Amal carb as I was using mikarb before or Am I tuning is not right way? 2 I feel the throttle cable is just a bit hard to throttle after changed to Amal carb ( have been told by mech just because of the spring in the Amal carb is high tensed one than one was on mikarb 3 after changing the airfilter from the Indian made box type to Amal pod one which gives me ‘kisk’ ‘ kisk’ noise or is that normal with that sort of filter as I never used that before replies will be much appreciated thanks
Great video. Question: How can you tell that you have a carb that is worn enough to need a new replacement? I get the part about over-tightened screw distorting the shape of the carb body, and the slide sticking because that part is no longer round. Anything else that I should look for?
Did some jb weld work on my Fischer Amal 24mm for my puch 175. The bottom bolt had stripped and was leaking. Bike starts now but won't run without full throttle or pushing the tickler Petcock is working as I took tube off and fuel is flowing Maybe time to throw in the hat and get a modern mikuni but something that looks cool. Also how do modern carbs hook onto these old bikes. I need a 24mm to mount to my puch 175
Sorry I really do not have any experience with your model but there are some carb adapters available depending on what the bolt pattern needed is you may have to make one of those . You can try Sudco international for a Mikuni and possibly a flange to go to your manifold .
I'm getting my 71 T120R back to where I can ride it again after over 10 years. The previous owner put on an intake for a TR6 so it only uses one carburetor. Will this be a problem. I have a new Amal. The previous own had a Mikuni carburetor on it. I still have it. I've owned this bike for about 20 years and haven't made road worthy since I bought it. It has a bolt on hard tail and a Girder front end. I would love to get it road worth for bike nights and show.s The motor is mounted on a 1965 frame. I've saved this video.
sorry for the late reply- for the throttle stop screw it in until the slide starts to rise and on the air fuel screw a good starting point is 1 1/2 turns out from seated . Cheers
The choke if used correctly is fine. If left on besides use more fuel , you won't be able to start the darn thing. Until spark plugs are cleaned. The problem is the opperator, so to stop the problem you stop the opperator from ever putting themselves in that possition.😎
Hey Todd what is your favorite year bonnieville and why ? I live in Boston and have been looking for a mostly complete bike that has a title to restore myself and ride , any leads out my way ? I kind of like the newer brakes .
For that I would say either a 65 or a 70 1965 was the last year for certain features and 70 was the last year before they went to oil in frame . With that being said any 63-70 Bonneville is a great choice but those are my 2 favorites. Cheers
Great video. I have recently acquired a '72 Bonneville T120R, and wondering how to determine which type of Amal carbs it has. Are the housings marked with the Series #, Model #, or some other markings? I understand your point early on in the video about rebuilding a 40-year-old carb, but are there any cases in which you might recommend an original rebuild rather than replacement? My Bonneville is original, and I'd like to keep it as original as possible. Thanks! BP
One other reason to remove it/them is that the choke slide is sprung to slam shut so if your choke cable breaks one day the slide will slam down like a guillotine and the bike will conk out immediately Not fun
These guy know what works, and works best. There tech department has sent me very useful information on my build. I appreciate it greatly.
I am now an AMAL Carburetor expert... Me and my BSA A65 thank you!
rebuilding one of these for my bsa A10 during lockdown best tutorial your never too old to learn .
Great video. Very well presented. Has helped me check over my 1967 Amal Concentric.
For the past 4 weeks, I was not able to fix my throttle cables....After watching your video... now I am sure I will get my bike running tomorrow

Thanks guys for the Triumph based videos! Just bought my 1st Triumph chopper and your parts, wiring diagrams, and video tutorials are a great resource!
Excellent video and very clear instruction, thankyou. Just what i needed to fit 3 Amals to my 74 Trident 750.
Excellent!! Thank you Sir for such an excellent Tutorial, Many Thanks From Evan, Wanganui , New Zealand

Hi. Fitted the throttle cable today- and also took the carb apart and gave it a clean . Seems to work a dream- so thanks for the great video !

BTW, I mentioned your excellence to the Royal Enfield Owners Forum, & I meant Hitchcocks not Hinckleys.
Excellent video. Helped me greatly with my 71 commando carbs.
Thanks for this I’ve just got Royal Enfield Pre 65 Trials and was trying to understand why it runs then stops again and again now I know appreciated
Excellent video on the carb. I have a 69 Bonneville and now I know how to adjust and troubleshoot the carbs. Thank you!

Excellent '101'! Perfect for my custom '78 T140. Tks!
First class tutorial. Thank you.

absolutely essential to get this right, cool tutorial todd,by a cool chap.thanks
Really helpful thank you .
I bought one of these for my 500 bullet and while having worked on bikes for many years your film reassured me of my knowledge .... really fantastic.... you helped a Brit feel ready to enter is workshop
Thanks! Very helpful regarding some doubts I had with the adjusters and cable type.
Todd, you would make a brilliant teacher ,keep it up!!!
See you later mate
I've got one of those 50 year old carburetors on my 1971 Triumph and it runs like a dream. I've also got a pair on a 1972 Triumph and I'm having some problems with them.
Great Video very useful. Both my T140 carbs had the faults you describe.
Great video!
This is a fantastic illustration!
Well done! Thanks much it's a great review if you know and a great explanation if you don't ( or just forgot ), strong work!!
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to make a quality video!
I really enjoyed the video and the relaxed way you have shown us the way to strip the carb "But One very big piece of info you did not mention was regarding the (Banjo fuel pipe nut connection ) that if done wrong can cause one hell of a problem,

mark your nut with a marker pen (or mark lightly with a hack saw) from the top to bottom of the nut when it is in line with the fuel pipe,
by doing this you will always have a nice clean fuel supply through the Banjo if the line is in line top to bottom of the pipe inlet.
Top tips👍 🏴 Wales uk.
Needed more close ups....but thanks...I found fitting the barrel and spring on the bike hard to do...any more tils?
Such cool videos. Very instructive.

Just bought a set of carb’s a year ago. Hasn’t been on the road yet, but just wondering. One of the ticklers is leaking constant fuel out the hole. Any suggestions.
random question could i install 2 of these on a 71 yamaha 650 i love the simplicity of the amal
Just purchased a barn Find 1972 Triumph Bonneville T - 120 and it has these Amal carburetors on them. Great Video Todd , Had the same deal with my BSA cable now i know THANKS
Absolutely excellent video. However, in interest of precision, the screws are PoziDriv and a PoziDriv screw driver should be used vs Phillips.
If you're using the choke do you have to drill out that hole on the top as well?
the pipe between the carbs used on duel carb applications, is so a tap can supply both carbs, and the other tap can be for reserve... good luck.
I didn't see the Clip - throttle needle, being placed into the carbureator, it was already inside the carbureator body during the video. I saw the Throttle needle being dropped into the carbureator, but didn't see where it was attached to the clip. Do you also have the Mk iv carb?
On the pilot jet i hear that certain years you can't remove them ,they are not screwed in is that correct ?
How are you starting your bike with out the choke
Great Vid Todd! I am about to get my first classic bike...'73 Commando. Will be needing to perform carb work to get her road worthy and this vid will be very helpful. what size main jet is ideal for a single carb, dual manifold application on a 500 daytona?....how many turns out for the air fuel mixture and idle screw?...thanks kindly
I recently bought a '67 TR6 with an Amal 930. The bike was at sea level and I live at 3500'. Could you give me jetting and air screw suggestions
Excellent explanation.
Great how to video as im new to amal carbs just wondering why the the choke components were removed .
I've had my T140V for 28 years and I never use the choke to start it, although I have left all the components in place. All you need for a cold start is to tickle both carbs and it will start and run straight away

What are the best silencers to fit on a t120 for that super sound mine sounds like an old tractor and is the balance pipe necessary Happy days
many thanks
Well done Todd, you will now be known as Sir Todd of toddington
This professor is even a comedian hilarious don't let the metal giblets get into the carburetor you really don't want that in there LOL great video very insightful
Cool video
Please do one for CV carb
really helpful, thanks!
Hi
I am Kumar I have just fitted new carb ( Amal mk1 concentric 26mm) and pod filter looks same as one that picture above on my bike ( 1984 Royal Enfield 350cc ) I have few questions to ask if you don’t mind and I guess as you are using Amal carb you would be able to clarify my doubt my questions are followe
1 I don’t find any difference of using Amal carb as I was using mikarb before or Am I tuning is not right way?
2 I feel the throttle cable is just a bit hard to throttle after changed to Amal carb ( have been told by mech just because of the spring in the Amal carb is high tensed one than one was on mikarb
3 after changing the airfilter from the Indian made box type to Amal pod one which gives me ‘kisk’ ‘ kisk’ noise or is that normal with that sort of filter as I never used that before
replies will be much appreciated
thanks
Great video. Question: How can you tell that you have a carb that is worn enough to need a new replacement? I get the part about over-tightened screw distorting the shape of the carb body, and the slide sticking because that part is no longer round. Anything else that I should look for?
other small things, warped mounting flange, slide wear, warped float bowl.
A great site.
Did some jb weld work on my Fischer Amal 24mm for my puch 175. The bottom bolt had stripped and was leaking. Bike starts now but won't run without full throttle or pushing the tickler
Petcock is working as I took tube off and fuel is flowing
Maybe time to throw in the hat and get a modern mikuni but something that looks cool.
Has anybody used the amel carbs on 80"ulh feed. Back
I'm getting my 71 T120R back to where I can ride it again after over 10 years.
You may need the correct manifold so that it fits am Amal correctly. and then you will have to tune it properly.
Nice video man. Thanks much. My new lightning appreciates it.
Anybody knows old carburator's which named Galery?
Hey Todd is what is the default position for the throttle stop screw and the pilot air screw?
sorry for the late reply- for the throttle stop screw it in until the slide starts to rise and on the air fuel screw a good starting point is 1 1/2 turns out from seated .
Cheers
Great info
Brilliant tutorial Todd 👍🏼 I do have one question......... why do you not put a choke in for your own custom builds🤔🤔
Also wondering - my T140 doesn't have a choke cable.
With that being said any 63-70 Bonneville is a great choice but those are my 2 favorites.

you didn't explain why you eliminate the choke system from the new carb
Great video. I have recently acquired a '72 Bonneville T120R, and wondering how to determine which type of Amal carbs it has. Are the housings marked with the Series #, Model #, or some other markings?
I understand your point early on in the video about rebuilding a 40-year-old carb, but are there any cases in which you might recommend an original rebuild rather than replacement? My Bonneville is original, and I'd like to keep it as original as possible.
Thanks!
BP
What’s the best way to fix a sticky tickler?
Wash it.
Love your show , What is your reason for removing the chock ?
Something else to troubleshoot on the side of the road. Probably want to keep it if you're riding in cold weather however! ;)
I was this too.
One other reason to remove it/them is that the choke slide is sprung to slam shut so if your choke cable breaks one day the slide will slam down like a guillotine and the bike will conk out immediately
