- A former midwife, Ithaca, N.Y. artist Graham Ottoson now births gourd art - sculptures, lamps and other objects produced from gourds. Correspondent Martha Teichner checks out some of Ottoson's "gourd-geous" creations at the gallery Gourdlandia, and tries her own hand at gourd carving.

I love how a gourd can be transformed into a beautiful work of art.
Graham is an amazing crafter/artist. I especially adore her lamps.
Laughing is priceless and so are the gourds.
I love gourds! Drying them and sanding, staining and crafting with them is the best fun. I really love the tiny ones, and working them into wreaths. Thanks for the smiles,
My best friends’ grandfather (in L.A.) was one of the very 1st original framers/vendor at the famous Original Farmer’s Market on Fairfax Ave & 3rd Street & he sold incredibly beautiful gourds back in the early 1030’s - they just recently closed their 4-5 Stalls, after 4 generations of family owners! That’s when I fell in love with gourds, when I saw the huge range in sizes & shapes they had as keepsakes from their grandfather!!
I meant 1930’s.
Wow, what incredible work. Used to be in Ithaca when my kid was at Cornell. What a cold cold freezing area of NYS. I can’t wait to visit gourdlandia.
The Shekere is a West African percussion instrument consisting of a dried gourd with a woven netting of beads covering the gourd. The instrument is commonly used in West African and Latin American music and can also be heard in many popular forms of music.
That’s so cool🙏🏻❤️
All of a sudden I want to plant gourds.
All Hail the Almighty Gourd ! This article made my day. In the seventies we used to have some painted gourd bird houses, loads of fun ! 💗🐦⬛💗
Wonderful! Graham is an amazing artist.
Growing up,my grandmother made gourd dippers, for drinking water from our well, or the spring out in the back pasture. We always had a gourd dipper.
Our neighbor across the road, would dry and paint gourds.
😆 Oh My Gourd It's Gourdgeous.
Which is hilarious because Ithaca always has "Ithaca is gorges"
That is awesome! You should see Oz Gourds lamps, very intricate. So lucky to own one. All sold out, and she has a waiting list for custom orders..
We call this Calabash here in West Africa
