That red part is the one way clutch bearing that engages the conical drag that is in thet housing. A big problem of ones that are having the spools pop off of Lamson fly reels is the use of lubricants like oil, which in the booklet that comes with the fly reels, it says that it is not needed, which I have never oiled or greased my one way clutch bearing or spindle to never have any problems at all and I just rinse it off with freshwater as they suggest. The other problem some have is the gland cap does come off if there is lubricants used, or they did not tighten the gland cap all the way down and sometimes the one way clutch bearing can hinder tightening it all the way if they do not get those notches lined up. I first started with Lamson liquids like that reel you have, but I now own a legacy speedster size 3, then also have a legacy litespeed micra 5 in size 3.5, which I am very happy to own them because Lamson will take care of anybody who has a fly reel of theirs because they stand behind their products. I have had them ask me to send a reel back to have them do some drag maintenance on my reels but I never had utilized that yet as I never have problems yet, but I know that I will be covered if I do have any issues.

Thanks for watching, the information and your experience with these reels. I am going to stick to my plan of cleaning once per year in the winter time when I am not fly fishing. I will try your suggestion of removing the silicone paste lubricant. As shown in the video, I did have a little trouble taking the drag off of the spindle. It was almost like there was a vacuum being formed and perhaps that is because of the lubricant I added. Thanks!

This is the perfect reel for what I do. I have spools loaded with a floating, Sink 3 and Sink 5. Perfect lake setup. Today the spool with my Sink 3 fell off the reel. Luckily into the boat. I actually was able to land the 16” Rainbow but the situation was annoying. I put the spoil back on a shortly after snagged a 26” Carp in the dorsal fin. Once again the spool ejected from the reel. Nearly broke my rod getting the fish to the net. John, I found your UA-cam and it was terrific. I believe I have the pieces installed correctly. My only question is why did the unit fail to begin with? If it happens again I will consult Lampson. Thanks for your video. Cheers!

      I feel for you!
I cleaned mine up again this last winter and so far no problems. I have also thrown a few clean Q-tips into a small zip bag into my already overloaded fishing vest, just in case I need to clean it somewhere other than my house. I hope your next trip will be all tight lines.

Yes, this is the absolute best way to save the day. Especially if you have traveled a long way to go fishing, far from home. For sure, the best option is to have a backup. Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thank you for this video! I’m a beginner fly fisherman that just purchased this reel set. And I’ll have to change the retrieve like you did. And if anything happens like this, I know what to do.

Thank you John! This is exactly what happened to me today - I'm Secretary of a fly fishing syndicate near Rievaulx Abbey in North Yorkshire, England (google Rievaulx Abbey - an amazing sight...) I had landed a couple of trout, on my first outing of 2024 (6th January), and was hoping to land a third when my Lamson Liquid reel spool just fell off, so, like you, I called it a day! Your video here just made my day better - I have sorted the reel thanks to you - good as new. Huge thanks from across the pond John. Cheers! Mark @MarkTwrites

Thanks for nice comments. This reminded me, since it snowed yesterday and will snow more today and tomorrow, to clean my reel. Forecast high is only 32 degrees F today. I did google Rievaulx Abbey and saw the river, bridge and old abbey. cheers and Tight lines!

Thanks for watching and commenting. See the comment about not adding any lubricant and he feels this causes the problem of the spool falling off. Or the gland cap coming loose. When I first got my reel I had to change it from a right hand retrieve to a left hand retrieve. At that time I did not add any lubricant and my spool still fell off many years later. But I never took it apart and cleaned it during those several years. So I am going to stick to my plan, to clean it in the winter when I am not fly fishing. Cleaning and hand tightening the gland cap should alleviate the problem of the gland cap becoming loose and the spool falling off. I am going to clean as good as I can and not put any lubricant. Cleaning in the field without clean rags and clean water is probably not the way to go for the long term, but could get one back to fishing for the day. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

This happened to me on cast 1,001 when i finally got a steelhead on the line. He made a run and my jubilation turned to horror as the reel tried to explode on me. I was somehow able to control the fish and hold the reel together, had to horse the fish in, but it was a total shit show, and ruined 1 of the 2 fish that i landed all week. I was fortunate to have a heavier orvis battenkil on my back up rod and was able to fish with that, but the weight of the lamson was perfect for my spey rod. I dont know if ill ever trust it again for a big fish.

I feel for you! At least I did not lose a big fish, just wasted money on gas to and from the lake. Thanks for sharing your not so good experience. Hope you have tight lines from here on out with a workable drag!

LOL! My wife used to tell me it is wash not warsh. She gave up and knows I will never change. LOL! I think somehow I started saying that when I was a kid. Now I am 75, so it is rock solid in my poor simple brain now and unfortunately, it will never change. Glad you got a kick out of it. Thanks for watching!
