Based on your previous videos, I bought a pair of Thursday Rugged & Resilient Captains a few months ago...I really like them....Thanks for the education you provide!!!
Just bought my first pair of Thursday Captain rough leather boots. They are still a bit stiff (on my second week). This video answers my questions about how to care for these boots. First, I’ve got to get broke in and dirty, wish me luck!
I used some Bick 4 conditioner on my pair, I watched this video a few times before hand. I honestly like the way they look now, it did slightly darken them and I am happy with it. I would recommend not using conditioner unless you want them darker.
I just wanted to comment that I did this process on my Arizona Adobes that were stained. I use the exact same products as this video. It worked and they look closer to new now, but I think that suede shampoo really dried out the toe cap and removed some of the original oils. I used both the conditioner and water resist spray afterwards. I’ll have to see how it goes moving forward. I think in retrospect, the best thing to do is just wipe down with water if there’s a bad stain and be vigilant about brushing with the horsehair brush. I’ll try to avoid using the shampoo again if I can.

I’ll add to this that I recently inadvertently changed the color and texture of my copper rough and tough red wing blacksmiths because I used a boot cream that was for smooth leathers. I wrongly assumed that if it was gentle enough for smooth finish leathers, my rough and tough boots could handle it no problem. The new color and texture are not horrible, but it’s just not the same boot that I picked out to purchase.
I ended up doing the same. I didn't watch or read the rugged resilient care video. I used a brown crème On my Arizona adobe and now they're darker. i didn't know about the saphir products used in this video. i own a pair of burgundy chippewas, and i've been using the product called saphir creme cuire gras, specifically for oily leathers used in boots which was after watching a boots maintenance video from kirby allison. the product is very similar to renovateur in terms of color, concentration and texture, but intended more for boots than regular dress shoes.

The front of my rugged and resilient Thursday boots has gone quite dry when compared to the less weathered sides of the boots. Is there a way to restore this without changing the leather too much? Thanks for videos, great content.
THANK YOU! Perfect timing as we get into the winter months. I wanted to see if I could use the black conditioning on my daughters Doc Martin’s regular black leather boots. I loved how the spray kicked it up a notch ! Great job as always, ya’ll have a great week 😊
Thanks, I too just ordered my first pair of R&R Thurs Captain boots. I’ve not received them yet. This vid provides good info on how to clean and care after some wear, but my question is should I prep them before I ever wear them, and if so how? Just the weather protectant alone? Is there any sort of “priming” that needs to happen? Thanks so much!🙏

Thanks for your awesome reviews. I just bought these exact boots after seeing this video, and love them❗ Are the Wolverine "Roughout" leather boots similar to the leather used on these Thursdays ? I just wanted to know if I should take care of them the same way. 😊
I made the mistake of putting smiths leather balm on some captains I had that were terracotta and I lost the terracotta color but I gained a sick tobacco color in the process that I prefer more lol Lesson learned though.
Just so you all know: if you put something like sno seal, or some other wax, on these types of boots it won’t ruin them. It will certainly change the texture and look, just like he said. Theyl take on a shiny look. The suede will disappear. And Itl be somewhat waxy to the touch.
@@DolphinsEatFish Yeah Itl darken them a lot. Not much you can do about that. And yeah scratches should be helped too since it’s making the leather more moist and is pointing a layer of wax over the leather.
Hi! Thank you for the video. I have a question: when should and shouldn't I use a liquin conditioner? I'm considering buying one and your remark about it made me wonder
Hello ! I have a question: what´s the differences and appropriate uses for: turpentine essence / methyl methanol based solvent / petrol-benzene stripper ? thanks a lot and congrats for so excellent work
I just received my Arizona adobe captains back from a local cobbler today - I had the insoles replaced. He also took the liberty of cleaning and polishing the boots for me, but they now have a mirror finish - it looks like a smooth brown weather. I am incredibly disappointed, but, the boots are still in great shape, so I will wear them. Apart from changing the look of the boots, does polishing do anything to harm the leather?
Incredibly helpful, thanks. I emailed Thursday Boots asking what products they recommend for maintaining my President Tobacco boots. They recommended not using any conditioner or waterproofing agent - however it's hard to turn down your advice when the results look so good. Do you think the dark brown suede waterproofing spray by Saphir will match Tobacco leather?
Great video! I’d be interested to see how you’d care for waxed roughout leather. Their waxed cacao on the American made boots is gorgeous. My wife is getting me a pair of those or Tecovas Dean for Christmas. 😁

This video came late for me. I use oil base sapphire renovateur on mine. My burnt copper is now darker and shinier. Is there a way to undo it? I don’t mind how it turned out now but in case there might be a way?
So, could you condition this if you WANTED to change the texture of the leather to smooth? As for why you would do that, some boots are only offered in wide in the R&R leather.
Great video as always! I was hoping to find advice on the Red Wing Rough and Tough leather, I’m guessing this method will work equally well for this leather? I assume the two are similar just with different branding.
For those of us who have accidentally darkened our boots with oils, what do you recommend to bring back the original color? Will the suede shampoo remove some of oils and restore the original look?
I had this issue with a pair of Red Wing Blacksmiths in copper rough & tough that I applied boot oil to. To get the boot oil out I used a small Kiwi horsehair brush and a bowl of warm water with a small amount of dish soap dissolved in it. I cleaned each boot 2-3 times, gently rinsing them under warm running water in between washes, wiping them down with a microfiber towel after to get the excess water off. Then I stuffed them with paper and let them dry overnight by an open window. In hindsight it may have only taken one treatment with the dish soap to get the oil out. The dish soap removed the oil, but it also took out the patina and the "pull up" effect from the leather. To restore the depth and patina for this particular Red Wing leather, I used a light treatment of their All Natural Leather Conditioner to put some depth and conditioning back into the leather. Hope that helps!
So these boots can be cleaned and water proofing applied? I’m TBC website it specifically says not to apply any thing other than a damp rag to clean the boots and a brush to remove any dirt. 🤔 thanks for the video!
Thanks for the great instructional video! It helps me know the boot cleaning process. I got my Thursday Captains in Tobacco Rugged & Resilient Leather about a month ago. I’m torn on which cleaning product to buy though! I like the Otter Wax brand because of the natural ingredients. You guys said to use a Seude shampoo and Otter Wax has a Suede Cleaner, but I saw on the “Gentleman’s Journey” channel he used saddle soap to clean rugged resilient leather. Otter wax has a natural saddle soap too. I just want to clean my boots and I would love them to have a nice oiled/moist look/texture after they dry. What do you recommend between? Thanks for your time and videos! :)
Hello and thank you for providing such knowledge. My concern is that Rugged and Resilient boots are listed by Thursday as "Waxed Weathersafe Suede". Do you still suggest this cleaning method or actually use a wax application method? Thank you
I've already done what you recomended not to do - creme on nubuk shoes - in the end of 2018, before I could watch your chanel. any idea how to get it off. I leave a picture of them in my istagram. thank you and best regards. harald
The question that seems to be popping up consistently down below is “wouldn’t mink oil do just as good of a job on these boots?”. This sounds like a GREAT video idea; however, I’ll answer it again. These particular boots are like a rough out/suede leather. Unless you completely want to change the LOOK and TEXTURE of these boots, you would NOT want to use mink oil. Mink oil has its time and place for SOME leathers, but it will definitely darken most any leather it’s applied to. It’s often a good conditioner for work boots that are taking a beating each day, but it’s not always the best go-to for all boots. Thursday Boots are NOT work boots. They are a well constructed style boot. For many rugged, work boots, yes, mink oil can be a good option. I hope that answers it. Yep...good video idea! 🤔
I actually like Obenauffs vs mink oil but it would be the same result on these boots. I end up using shoe cream if I don't want to change color or darken. Actually I hate to admit but I use Kiwi shoe cream. But it might change the texture. I never buy a rough out or suede leather on my boots.
@UCkCPIwxskJpk-qGx6DO_i7g Saphir is just about the highest end you can go for shoe care products. There's a reason a lot of cobblers and leatherworkers in general use it as a go-to when working with leather, whether to reinvigorate the leather or as a finish before selling a new product. Junk isn't the right word to use. If anything, mink oil is junk 90% of the time unless you're buying a cheaper pair of $100 work boots that you aren't looking to keep for a decade or two and just toss after a couple of seasons. Mink oil does the trick for throwaway boots that don't need much attention and works well in that regard. It's cheap, helps with water resistance, and conditions enough so that the leather doesn't dry out. Going for mink oil is common because of those reasons, not because it's a top of the line product for every scenario. EDIT: the comment must have been deleted.
@@Cemmos The previous comment from the other user was getting a bit out of hand and uncalled for. We had to delete it. Thank you for your input. I completely agree with you! 👍
The Rugged & Resilient line of their boots is made from unfinished leather, very much like suede. Wax would only push the texture of the leather down so that it wouldn’t have that nap look. Due to the moisture in the wax, it could also darken the leather.

So, I’ve had a pair of Terracotta Captains for about 5 years. I’m just now learning that I should not have put leather conditioner on it. Should I start treating it as suede or has too much damage been done?
If you are cleaning older shoes or handbags, how do you know what kind of leather it is so as not to ruin it? I found your channel searching how to clean a pair of cowboy boots that got wet and muddy as well as a older Prada bag that needs a lot of TLC. Other than suede and patent, I had no idea there were differences in leather and I could ruin it by improper cleaning. Now I'm nervous to touch them.
This is perfect! Just got gifted the same pair for the holidays is there any break or anything I should do before wearing this type of boot/leather (Arizona Adobe)
I'm curious. You mentioned that your boots are Arizona Adobe, but they look so much more yellow than the pictures on Thursday's site that show the Arizona Adobe as a much more reddish shade. Yours look more like the burnt copper to me. Am I mistaken?
Are these unlined? On my unlined leather I put products on the inside that can darken the leather. Shoe grease or mink oil or Obenauffs ... I put on the inside. And I also have a shoe drier. Bought one for the kids soccer shoes years ago and it worked do well at extending the life of their expensive soccer boots that I use it on my boots. I've found that slightly warmed leather accepts conditioner better so I warm them with the drier or some radiant heat before conditioning.
Thursday’s are lined on the inside. Definitely more of a “dress boot” than a truly rugged, “made for the elements” kind of boot. Yeah, I love boot driers! I own some as well.
I just ordered my first pair of thursday diplomats in Arizona adobe. I can't seem to find any care or conditioning info for that particular leather. Would you mind pointing me in the right direction please? Maybe the correct cleaner/conditioner..I just don't want to ruin them. Thanks in advance and I just subd!
Love your videos and never miss one. I have a question about what you recommend for my Redwing iron rangers. They are some kind of oil finish but I started using Saphir Renovateur on them to prevent drying. While I have no desire to have them shiney, the Renovateur seems to add a shine when brushed. Should I continue using it or switch to the boot paste that Redwing sells? Thanks.
Hi! Thanks for watching! Yeah, Renovateur has some waxes in it that’ll give a bit of a shine. On Red Wings, we usually use the Greasy Leather Cream by Saphir, which was made for oiled leathers, or you can use the stuff Red Wing sells. I, personally, don’t recommend Renovateur.
Hi guys, I'm assuming my Thursday Loggers in Waxed Cacao is in the same category? They just arrived yesterday, I put them thru 3 hrs of icy snow n slush, feet stayed dry, no painful break in hotspots, luv 'em! But I got anxious after taking them off and put a light coat of Saphir Renovateur on them, waited until this morning and brushed them, still same color and the light waxy shine is back, but I'll stay away from conditioners knowing this now.
You two are the reason I have become a huge leather nerd.
Haha...thanks! Glad you’re enjoying.

Keep the Videos Coming. So much great information and great craftsmen.
Love the video! So since my boots aren’t that dirty is it safe to skip the shampoo and just use water and the horsehair brush?
Should you do anything to new leather boots? Like apply waterproof spray, apply conditioning cream, ect?
Great info, just got a text from Thursday Boots & my tobacco captains just shipped out 😷👍🥾
👍👍
I want a pair of those, but I need wide sizes

@@InertFoxtrot117 I just bought a pair in EE wide. Most comfortable boots I have ever owned.
This was so timely! I was about to email you for info on how to care for my Terracotta Captains. The Thursday website should be a little clearer on how to care for them but alas The Shoe Brothers come through!
How did they turn out? I have some terracotta captains too and they are pretty thrashed after a few too many nights out in town eeek! haha
Teracata Captains are not the rugged and resistance leather!
I've watched a few of your guys videos, this one made me subscribe. My Black Matte Captains just came yesterday.
The front of my rugged and resilient Thursday boots has gone quite dry when compared to the less weathered sides of the boots. Is there a way to restore this without changing the leather too much? Thanks for videos, great content.
Could you do a review/proper care of the current style suede military boots? I don't any of professionals that have a video on the subject.
Suggestion for future video: would you mind only work on one of the boots so that we can see the differences side by side?
THANK YOU! Perfect timing as we get into the winter months. I wanted to see if I could use the black conditioning on my daughters Doc Martin’s regular black leather boots. I loved how the spray kicked it up a notch ! Great job as always, ya’ll have a great week 😊
Thank you!
Thanks so much!🙏
My Dad recently passed away and we have a really nice set of 1) Justin leather brown cowboy boots size 12D and 2) Boot & Shoe Workers Union tan work boots size 10 1/2 E. Could I send them to you to find a home, or should I just donate them to a local charity? Congrats on 200K subs! Love your work and your channel.
Love this video. I wish I would have watched it before I put brown cream polish on them. Is there anything I can do now to undo what I have done?
Great video! I was just wondering if the Leather Cleanser from Thursday would be good for these type of boots?
Thanks for sharing this info guys, you're doing wonderful job! I'll get a pair of Arizona Adobe Captains myself soon so it's great to know how to take care of them. I was also wondering if I can use this Suede/nubuck shampoo and spray conditioner for my smooth leather or I need something else?
Great video. Answered a lot of questions that I couldn’t seem to find anywhere else.
I assume it's the same for the "matte black" captains? My pair are on their way and I'm very excited.
I wish I had seen this video before I took my boots to my local cobbler. My boots are now dark they don't have the same feel to the touch, am I 100% screwed lol?
Thanks for your awesome reviews. I just bought these exact boots after seeing this video, and love them❗
Are the Wolverine "Roughout" leather boots similar to the leather used on these Thursdays ? I just wanted to know if I should take care of them the same way. 😊
I wish I watched this sooner. I put a liquid shoe cream and I'm wondering if there's anyway to get that rough leather look back?
Do you have the small brush for sale on your site? Thanks!
Would love to see what it would look like if you DID use liquid conditioners and or wax on the rough and rugged range
I made the mistake of putting smiths leather balm on some captains I had that were terracotta and I lost the terracotta color but I gained a sick tobacco color in the process that I prefer more lol Lesson learned though.
I always wondered why my Thursday Arizona Adobe captains "felt" different and why the show marks differently
Just so you all know: if you put something like sno seal, or some other wax, on these types of boots it won’t ruin them. It will certainly change the texture and look, just like he said.
Theyl take on a shiny look. The suede will disappear. And Itl be somewhat waxy to the touch.
would it make them darker? i like the color but these are pretty easy to scratch, would it help protect it from scratches?
@@DolphinsEatFish Yeah Itl darken them a lot. Not much you can do about that.
And yeah scratches should be helped too since it’s making the leather more moist and is pointing a layer of wax over the leather.
Great video! Will it be the same steps for Thursday Captain Terracotta? Many thanks!
Hi! Thank you for the video. I have a question: when should and shouldn't I use a liquin conditioner? I'm considering buying one and your remark about it made me wonder
Great video! Would these procedures be similar for Red Wing Rough and Tough leathers?
Hello ! I have a question: what´s the differences and appropriate uses for: turpentine essence / methyl methanol based solvent / petrol-benzene stripper ? thanks a lot and congrats for so excellent work
How do I get the dry look? My boots don't have the dry look like when I first got them.
Nice reply and advice everyone, thanks. 🙄
Great video! I’d be interested to see how you’d care for waxed roughout leather. Their waxed cacao on the American made boots is gorgeous. My wife is getting me a pair of those or Tecovas Dean for Christmas. 😁
New to the rugged and resilient line. Can I use saddle soap instead of the suede shampoo?
No, saddle soap is not for suede or nubuck from what Ive read.
No, I wouldn’t recommend it. I’d recommend using a suede soap instead, like I used in the video.
We developed a great cleaner last year that works perfectly with our Rugged leathers. To clean these leathers, you can spray the Leather Cleaner( available on our website) and use a clean Microfiber Cloth to wipe them down, as well as a Premium Shoe Brush to remove any dirt on the surface.--- Trenton & Heath also have shared some great recommendations in this video :)
I have the same boots. Thanks for the tutorial.
Love watching the cleaning ❤
Great video as always! I was hoping to find advice on the Red Wing Rough and Tough leather, I’m guessing this method will work equally well for this leather? I assume the two are similar just with different branding.
what was the shoe cream you used on the sole and heel block? I have the exact same boots and the same messed up soles lol
For those of us who have accidentally darkened our boots with oils, what do you recommend to bring back the original color? Will the suede shampoo remove some of oils and restore the original look?
I’d love to know if anyone has a solution.
Will mink oil spray work the same as a conditioner for this type of leather? Thanks!
Good question I use it successfully on suede.
should i use the “neutral” or “dark brown” rennovateur for the tobacco captain? also great stuff!!
Dark brown for my tobacco presidents
I just used some mink oil. Worked just fine, though leather darkened
So these boots can be cleaned and water proofing applied? I’m TBC website it specifically says not to apply any thing other than a damp rag to clean the boots and a brush to remove any dirt. 🤔 thanks for the video!
Can you use a suede eraser on this type of leather...thanks for your expert help
i was just about to ask about these until i found this video 😅. great content as usual and thank youu.
@@TrentonHeath understandable! It was pretty aggressive for no reason.
Thanks, it was very helpful. I am curious what would heapen if someone put wax on it how would the color and the texture change.
The Rugged & Resilient line of their boots is made from unfinished leather, very much like suede. Wax would only push the texture of the leather down so that it wouldn’t have that nap look. Due to the moisture in the wax, it could also darken the leather.
Hi - thank you for the video. I used bees wax on mine and it darkened the leather. Can I expect the boots to become brighter as time goes on?
Would you recommend using the Cobblers Choice waterproof spray that Thursday sells, on the Tobacco captains?
Love your videos! Do you know where I can get the Renvoteur or something similar in Australia? Thanks!
Great video, what would you recommend for Truman Shrunken Bison boots to keep the same color? Thanks
