I am a 73 yr old Veteran with Parkinson’s who is on a fixed income and who is building his first layout starting with a 4x8 made from pieces from 50yrs of collecting. Many of the buildings are in the original boxes not put together, and no longer made. Due to my tremors I will have it wired. It is a freelance called the Chippewa Northern “ with connections to Canadian National and Chicago & Northwestern.A couple of add-ons are in planning; one a residential neighborhood with no trackage running through it.
You should do progress videos on your UA-cam channel. Even if you don’t like talking in them just photos or short videos. It’s always nice to see what other people do. And your plan sounds very interesting.
@@TGsports_Free2watch Actually Tom, it could be interesting, but I have no recording equipment, nor a channel. One of the buildings is the old HO scale White House. Going to leave the East and West Wings off, and it will become my passenger station. Have found a paint that looks like sandstone when it dries.
First and most importantly, thank you for your service. I wish you the best and hope you are able to enjoy your first layout for many more years to come.
Thank you for your service my friend :) I have two serving at the moment. One in the Army and One in the Navy. The youngest, in the Navy, was involved in making our layout but when he enlisted, he was off to the Navy Tech School, and we have not been able to finish it at this time. They are both enjoying their time serving in much differing areas of the Service. I'm planning on continuing our layout and will enjoy the time we spend together when he is on leave as we put the kits together and make trees and chat while he is here visiting. I have decided it is important to just get "something" up and running and enlarge it later as time permits. thanks for making me think about "Gettin 'er done!" Good luck with your railroad and I do hope you record you progress from start to finish to help others and to inspire those of us who tell ourselves "we cant" at the moment. Even a phone is a good recording device now a days :) God Bless
I've been preparing to do a slot car table build; what a great way to do a table top that can be broken down. I was thinking 2x4, plywood and maybe a hinge on my garage wall. Totally doing this instead. Thanks for posting
My dad built me a 4x6 plywood benchwork about 1 foot high. For me, I was like an architect, relaying different designs and never tacking or glueing it done. It never got old or boring.
Just a thought. I never scored by styrofoam and have not experienced any problem. You might suggest using more 3’ flex track to reduce the number of rail joints, which will improve conductivity. Just ideas. I find #4 turnouts work fine in a yard while saving space which means more track! Good starter video. Keep sharing it is a great hobby to promote.
Building HO scale layout. Atlas code 100 tracks. Flex tracks. Manual switch. Bumpers. Curves tracks 22", autoracks and boxcars 86'. Good job my friend. Where is you 🐱 Binx ? Scooby Doo is a good dog.
Hello I'm new to the hobby and want to dive deeper in to it and I would like to use this as my first track is it possible I can get a list of what you used, thank you greatly
Welcome to the hobby! But I’ll try my best to include all that I used. I used all Atlas track code 100. Switches are atlas as well. The MRC TECH 2 2500 DC Power Supply for running the trains. Also a 1.5 inch 4x8 sheet of insulation foam. 1/2 inch sheet wood. Also rail joiners you’ll need.
Building HO scale train layout. My layout is N scale. Atlas and Bachmann tracks. Code 80. Flex tracks. Nails for fixed. Manual and remote switch. Atlas and Bachmann. DC locomotives.
Hi - Thank you for a very interesting video. I have a question for the experts: I used to run analog Marklin trains on M tracks, and now I would like to switch to DCC: What would be the best way to go DCC in terms of tracks (M, C, or K)? Should I use Marklin or another brand of tracks? Please, I would be grateful if someone could help me with this. Thank you!!!
Thank you! And I’m not sure, your best bet is to search up online some track plans people have made with that radius. 4x8 layouts are all over since it’s very popular for size
Hello Top Railroad, You build very nicely and your videos are perfect. i like it and enjoy it... what I wanted to ask: what is the name of background music at minute 4:35? Sorry for my bad English, greetings from Austria franz✨
I like the part he try to put stuff on top of the layout just to give it some weight and only thing I'm thinking of he could have just put the girlfriend or wife on top of it just for some weight in the cat in the window slowly when I watch the second video I got to see the cat on top of the layout good job on it
Beginners should realize that building a model railroad this way is very counter productive. Large sheet railroads ( like 4X8) are very wasteful of space, hard to access unless taking up the entire center of a room, usually require unrealistically sharp curves, and watching a train chase its tail around and around is nothing like the real thing. Small, shelf railroads that can hang on a wall, and be expanded are much better models to make. If you want to see trains run in circles, join a club railroad and take your favorite equipment there - not on a 4X8 sheet!

My teen son has gotten really into model trains. I've been looking for a simple DIY train table. This is such an awesome way to make one!
I've been preparing to do a slot car table build; what a great way to do a table top that can be broken down.
I was thinking 2x4, plywood and maybe a hinge on my garage wall.
Totally doing this instead. Thanks for posting
This is the channel I’m going to watch on building my model railroad town

Building HO scale layout.
Atlas code 100 tracks.
Flex tracks.
Manual switch.
Bumpers.
Curves tracks 22", autoracks and boxcars 86'.
Good job my friend.
Where is you 🐱 Binx ?
Scooby Doo is a good dog.
I really enjoyed your videos, very helpful and informative.
Olf, if that doesn't give a man chills, that's a strong man 3:02

A 22 inch gives you 44 inch diameter fits on a 4by 8 it's always good to use the biggest radius you can
Just found your channel. Subscribed and looking forward to watching all your videos. I don't currently have a layout, but hope to someday.
Nice work
Track mode from? Nice
i love how you can see your cat in the background sometimes
Just subscribed I'm very interested in how you've progresed but why didn't lay the grass feilds ect first or what is your plan thanks
If u don’t like the sound of foam, say AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH and also, this is a cool train build
Ebay is great but always support local if you can good video
What is the radius for the outer loop end I understand the inner is 18 degrees but what's the outer? thanks
The outer loop is a 22” radius
Hey man!
Hey!
I need some help, I have a 30" wide board but I need a curved angle to fit. Can anyone tell me what angle track that will fit on it.
With that much space I’m not sure any curve would fully work to go around sadly. Maybe in N scale though
Building HO scale train layout.
My layout is N scale.
Atlas and Bachmann tracks.
Code 80.
Flex tracks.
Nails for fixed.
Manual and remote switch.
Atlas and Bachmann.
DC locomotives.
I would like links to where you got the tracks
I got some of the track from eBay and also a brick and mortar store called Hobby Town
@@TopRailroad thanks
If your AC doesn’t work, just listen to this foam crunching and squeaking on repeat
Did you buy a starter set from atlas or how did you determine how much track was needed
Thought you were gonna cut your wrist at 2:56! Careful of your blade’s line of travel sir! When the blade slips on the foam you lose control!
Hey I know this video was made 3 years ago how what pieces Did you use

Yeah the train layout is cool and all, but how about that layout on your computer table? lmao tasty greens. :P Subbed!
Great video! Very helpful, just a question. Any good track plans for a 4x8 that has 22 radius curves?
Thank you! And I’m not sure, your best bet is to search up online some track plans people have made with that radius. 4x8 layouts are all over since it’s very popular for size
I like the shirt by the way
I plan on using a table for my layout
Hello Top Railroad,
You build very nicely and your videos are perfect. i like it and enjoy it...
what I wanted to ask: what is the name of background music at minute 4:35?
Sorry for my bad English, greetings from Austria franz✨
Thank you for the compliments! The song/beat is called “Loremipsum” by Dao Beats. He’s on UA-cam and has great music. Your English is great btw 😁
Thank you so much for your quick answear, have fun with your model railroad 😉
What HO code are the switches, 100 or 83?
Code 100
Cuánto mide tu tabla está super
Good video 👍

They have a decent train section. I always go there
I found a $500 worth of stuff at goodwill so look for stuff like that there too
Wow that’s amazing! I’m always looking, just hard to find anything nowadays
I got a whole box of track for 5bucks from a train store switch's straight curves bumpers all kinds of stuff
Wow that’s a steal of a deal
I find all kinds of stuff there got an older power pack there four cab one 25 bucks it's heavy
I like the part he try to put stuff on top of the layout just to give it some weight and only thing I'm thinking of he could have just put the girlfriend or wife on top of it just for some weight in the cat in the window slowly when I watch the second video I got to see the cat on top of the layout good job on it
That’s hilarious, thank you though!
what kind of switches do u use?
I used Atlas Code 100 Nickel Silver #861 manual turnouts for the layout
@@TopRailroad thanks! Watching your 4x8 building videos inspired me to make my layout in Atlas instead of Bachmann track.🙂
Oh that’s awesome! Atlas track is a great choice 👍🏼
Once you Start Modeling The Layout is Gonna get Bigger one way or Another.
That’s so true
Never done
