Any plastic sheet or tarp can collect lots of water..you don't even needs a shead roof...get a sheet on the washing line .and divert into containers.

    Nicely done mate!
How do you stop the wind getting under it and lifting .... eventually causing it to fail?
Got to say I am impressed with the whole "new" Hacienda you are making for yourself!
Now something I have noticed for a while but kept quiet about ...... but as you brought it up ..... I have noticed a distinct lack of Goat in your videos! Any plans to remedy that? ;o)

We have just had filthy weather nationwide all weekend. It slapped up and down a bit and made the cabin shudder. but the fire brigade had three call outs to damaged roofs and none of them were mine!

I lived 22 years in my old housetruck- I never quite got around to putting gutters on. lol.
but what I did for water was just a shade sail on a steep angle. It caught the rain and diverted it to one low corner and into my rubbish bin-rain barrel. It gets filtered down to mosquito lavae size by the watering can rosein the centre of the lid- then filtered to 2micron in my terracotta gravity filter with coliodal silver for bacteria. sometimes if my water has sat for a few weeks in the tub outside and not being used much - Ill add 30 drops of Chlorine dioxide to give it a kick. thats one drop per two liters if its full- I reduce the amount if its 1/2 or 1/4 full. hope that helps? see this vid ua-cam.com/video/31WPLfT9wU8/v-deo.html

It works so well- It withstood the weekends storm- allows light in, breathes cos of the gaps around the edges- gives me water right by the kitchen door and cost me no more than two pipe flanges and a pair of rachet tie downs. Why am I Im single? women should be lining up to live this life!

I have a well, but after the first four gallons it goes very slowly. It goes down 30' into sandstone, so its good water, just not enough of it. So I have been collecting rain water. I get heavy snow from November to April, 150 to 300 inches every winter so I have to be creative about how I get water all year. The plastic like that would work in the warm months, its a cool idea you came up with. I use removeable gutters on my shop and house. The shop can fill a 250 gallon tank in about ten minutes with a light rain on only one side of the roof, its 32x48 and I have a 16' lean to on both sides of it.
In winter I melt snow in cattle tanks for my shower/house and 5 gallon buckets for my dogs. I have to remove the gutters or the snow rips them off, because part of the snow melts on the roof, then freezes in the gutters. Then I get several feet of snow on the roof, and that is not good. When the snow finally slides off it takes the gutters with it.
Our buildings have to be rated for 72psi for snow load, my shop is good to 75psi so its good.. no need to have 6' of snow up there though. No that is not a typo. Its psi not square feet. Its a balmy 42F today on 21 May.
I have to go green/off grid because energy is very expensive here, and the grid is unreliable. The power has been off twice this week alone. It blinks often, and usually goes out for several hours, even with perfect weather conditions. Such is rural life in the north.
I need lots of water because I produce ethanol for my vehicles, using tree sap, coffee grounds, and cattails to make it. Cattails are wonderful, they clean water, make prodigious amounts of starch, are very difficult to eradicate, and they grow fast. One acre of cattails gets you around 1000 gallons of fuel. This summer I am building two one acre ponds to grow them, all the frogs around here are going to love me. Gasoline has doubled in price since last year, and I really like to drive vintage muscle cars all summer, so I have to make fuel if I want to drive them. The power I can make using vodka is considerably more than I can on gasoline, I build my engines with very high compression ratios to take advantage of ethanol.

@@t.h.o.r. I live in northern Michigan, part of the world that is often left off maps, and people do not realize is the USA and not Canada. They call it the upper peninsula, we are between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, I live on the north side about a mile from the shore of Superior.
The huge amount of snow comes from lake effect, where the warm (40F ish surface temp in winter) lake evaporates and as the fog moves across colder land it turns to snow in huge bands. I can get 6' of snow in two or three hours.
We are somewhat remote like Alaska, its a 3 hour drive to Green Bay Wisconsin, the largest town within a 6 hour drive in any direction. Detroit is 8 hours, Chicago 7, Minneapolis is 8 hours. The snow and mosquitoes keep most people away, they like to visit in winter to run snowmobiles on trails, but they don't want to live here. Not many jobs available that aren't rooted in tourism.
The land out in the woods is usually cheap, but its also usually swamp to a large extent. The bedrock is just under the soil, I only have two feet of dirt on top of the rock. The upper peninsula was a mountain range a few hundred million years ago. The glaciers wore it down to rolling hills. We have an extinct volcano near Marquette too, they call it 'black rocks' on Presque Isle. You can check out drone footage of it, that is a cool looking place.
The females around here are mostly Finnish ancestry. So they are tall, with flat asses, and usually have an attitude to go with the strange sense of humor. They call themselves yoopers, and the area we live in is referred to as the U.P.... you know upper peninsula. My ex wife is a Finn girl who was born and raised here. Substances in excess and divorce are big topics around here. I am staying single for a reason... lol.
I've had several friends who were Kiwis and Aussies over the years, its hard not to adore people who live down under. You guys are usually hard core survivors like people where I come from.
