Fiat just doesn't have any brand recognition, at least here in the US. Few people know what Fiat is and the few who do are painfully aware of it's historically poor reliability. It's unfortunate because I think Fiat has come a long way since those times, but they've just never established much of a foothold here. The fact they're kind of known for making small cars doesn't help their case, since that's more of a European trend than it is here in the US where gas is cheaper and bigger is more common.
@@sly9263 On the contrary, Fiat has plenty of brand recognition. The problem is that the recognition dates back to the 60's and practically everyone in the USA associates Fiat with "HURR DURR FIX IT AGAIN TONY, FIATS ARE UNRELIABLE". No one wants to talk about the fact that JD Power ratings placed Fiat above the Scion brand, and Scions are bullet-proof Toyotas. A lot of the low scores in car ratings for modern day Fiat have to do with trivial things like hating the Blue & Me sound system or the interiors rattling and being cheap, not actual engine or major mechanical issues. The 1.4l multi-air is a tried and true perfectly reliable engine. I had my 500 Abarth until 70k miles when the clutch failed (and I only declined to repair it because the cost relative to the vehicle's value was not a good investment). Had the cost to repair the clutch been lower, I would have gladly kept the car until it was well and truly dead. It's a miracle for any heavily stressed high boost sports car to have a clutch last that long.
Yes you can & its called a Mazda MX-5 like Joe says the naturally aspirated engine with a manual is much more fun ! Also the MX-5 Miata handles much better than the 124 Spyder.
Your first statement is an opinion. Your second is demonstrably wrong. In head to head tests with professional drivers, the 124 beats the MX-5 ND. Time after time. The main reason is how the suspensions are set up. The MX-5 has more body roll. While less sophisticated drivers think that makes it feel more "fun", more advanced drivers realize it makes them slower through turns. A fairly common theme amongst pro drivers who have done the head to head tests is that the MX-5 "feels faster, while the 124 IS faster." And yes, the MX-5 will beat the 124 off the line by a small margin. A secondary reason is that, once the turbo is spooled up, the 124 is faster. But neither car is a drag racer. Both cars excel at cutting curves, autocross-type racing, canyon runs, etc. Any good 124 driver will simply keep their revs up and very slowly pull away from the MX-5. I think perhaps that is why you say the MX-5 is more fun - you get to watch the back of a 124. That is definitely a more pleasing experience than watching the back of the less pleasing aesthetic of the MX-5. As I always note however, you can't go wrong with either car; both are very good at what they do.
@@DropTopTees Even Joe agreed with me. The Fiat 124 is slow off the line waiting for the turbo to spool up. Professional drivers ? The video I watched said he loved the MX-5 & beat a Dodge Hellcat by 4 seconds around a race track. Who are these drivers that don't know how to drive ? Don't forget at 5000 rpms your done !
@@ag4allgood Neither car is an off-the-line kind of racer. If you want a drag racer, you buy a different car. MX-5s and 124s are twisty road, autocross style cars. The 124 is slightly better at that type of driving than is the MX-5 ND. Sorry, but it has been tested over and over and the 124s edges out the MX-5 ND. Don't forget, even the MX- 5 ND II has less torque than the 124. And it handles body roll better than the MX-5. Added together, it is slightly faster on a track or canyon run. In reality, the cars are even enough driver skill becomes the biggest factor in a head to head race. However, as I said, in head to head competitions where both professional race car drivers took turns with both cars, the 124 prevails. It is a tad more capable than it's sister.
@@DropTopTees MX-5 ND / ND2 are quicker off the line & will leave the 124 Spyder in the dust waiting for the turbo to spool up. Its also 150 pounds heavier than my 2016 Club soft top. Its throttle response makes it more aggressive & the super light clutch is buttery smooth. My car has the Bilstein shocks so the body roll is minimal. Also has the LSD so both rear wheels give it traction from the stop. MX-5 is a better daily drivers car by FAR ! 😎
This is a fantastic looking, fantastic driving sports car. Not just for $20k, but at any price. I have a Lusso and hope to keep it until they take the keys from my cold, dead hands. PS - There's additional storage compartments behind the seats for emergency gear. Most owners don't even know the about this!
Yep, not to mention that the comment about fitting "maybe a baseball" in the storage bin is ridiculous. You can fit large books in there with space to spare. Doug DeMuro provided a much more fair and realistic review.
I had a 1979 Fiat Spider....Weber Dual 44 IDF Carburetors and free flow exhaust....I packed everything I owned.... drove 2,000 miles in 24 hrs with ear protection to begin a new life....damn I miss being young and rebellious!
If you’re going to be commenting or using it as a Sunday cruiser you can make a case for the auto, but obviously most people will get more out of the stick (which apparently is the manual from the previous gen Miata). Should wake up the engine too, as might an aftermarket exhaust if you can spare the extra $. I’d take this over the same year Miata; I prefer the styling, but the recent Miata’s with their updated engines are a tough comparison. Nice review of course, keep up the great work.
7:04 Holy mother of depreciation, from 30k to 18k on only 13,000 miles... Might be worth taking a gamble on an older one if it keeps depreciating at that rate for lol
@@nelsonperez1577 it's because of the chip shortage, it's selling for just over MSRP now. Since they're only doing 1 generation I think it'll become a very rare car in 10-20 years, same as happening with the old miata's.
Abarth 124 with bolt-ons and tune absolutely rips, but still wouldn’t get into it above $15,000. It’s an enthusiast car. Only problem is the dealer network. Never had a good experience taking my Abarth 500 to Dodge-Fiat service centers, stand-alone Fiat shops are dying. 110k driven from DC to LA and back, very reliable and easy to work on. But zero respect from most Dodge and independent service shops.
The only issue I have (I have a 2017 Classica) is getting parts. Someone rear ended me and I'm still waiting for a new bumper. The car's are GREAT! Over 30,000 mi and couldn't be happier....and I had a Miata a few years back, but liked the styling and ride in the Spider much more.
I wholeheartedly recommend this vehicle! I've owned mine for a year now and I love it to death. It's a GREAT ride. I daily drive this and haven't had any issues.
@@marcusmcneal7453 I was trying to decide between that car and the 124 Spider. I loved the more aggressive look that the 124 has and ended up going with that. I feel like you can't go wrong with either car.
I'm torn between this and same year Miata. i prefer the Italian styling of the Fiat, but I'm worried it's not as fun to drive as the Miata. This is such a good looking car!
Even though it was a niche product, this is the only competitive car they had here. With this and the 500 gone, they’re basically done unless they come up with something else. The 500X and 500L won’t cut it. It’s too bad.
It's definitely fun to drive when I rented it but kind of scary on the freeway because it's so small. Almost had a dude in his suv run me over cause he was sprinting out of the on ramp and slicing through lanes. He didn't see me in my tiny lil spider 😂 Needless to say I had to swerve in the left lane to avoid collision. Anyway, I would buy it. Just wish it had a backseat.
I bought a '23 MX-5 soft-top not long ago, and while I love it, I do prefer the looks of the Fiat. It would be sweet if the Fiat had the 181 hp engine of the Miata.
Yes the fiat 124 spider makes a great preowned vehicle with japanese reliability to boot. This is a great convertible for people who just want a sporty looking convertible just like the original. The vehicle was never a hot performer. It was a pretty 2 seat convertible.
Beautiful car, IMO much better engine than Miata, Fiat hit a home run with production of this car. HOWEVER, They totally screwed up the marketing. Some of us real car guys and gals didn't even hear about this car the first year it was available in USA. Lousy dealership support also; spotty, a few good dealers, but most were more interested in supporting Jeeps and Dodge trucks. Marketing and support failures is why production stopped. I have mine! So glad I bought it when I did. More fun in a car than I've had in decades. Mine is modded some and is like a go-cart on the street and autocross course.
Joe, I would definately buy this over the Mazda version. Although I believe Fiat should have made their own version of this car. The people who want "Italian" do not (usually) want Japonese. I worked for Fiat in 1978-80 and sold 124 Spiders brand new in NorCal. They were around $10k and that was considered expensive in 1978. ha ha
Theres more to the story. This car was supposed to be branded an Alfa Romeo. They teamed up with Mazda because of their bullet proof suspension. Once the deal was made they realized that Alfa had a clause requiring them to be completely built in Italy. At the last minute, to save the deal with Mazda, they badged it a fiat 124 spider. I have owned one since 2019. Ive owned corvettes and Mazda RX sports-cars and I have to say this is the funnest car I have ever owned. As an added benefit is the attention it attracts. You can see a Miata or a Corvette coming a mile away. Nobody knows what this car is!
@@garyfairfield3682 Here is a bit of history....I sold Fiat 124 Spiders new in 1979-80! I worked for Fiat in the SF Bay Area, just before they stopped importing them. We sold the car new for around $10k. That was expensive in 1979. ha ha Glad you are enjoying yours.

Plenty of “nimble”. I love my 124 Spider - in Mare Blue Metallic paint! I bought it in 2023, one previous owner, impeccable service record, 26k miles. $24k Don’t buy an automatic! Long live the left pedal! A lot cooler than the Miata!
my abarth 124 is 19K miata is smaller, big guys you want the fiat. Turbo is fun to play with, I like the back fire that miata does not do. even miata should be faster, but this car fits me better.
Still love convertibles so much like this one and my dream convertible. And to be honest in my opinion, it looks a car that 16 year old kids could probably use to get to school or college on their own. and If I did have a convertible as my car, then I would have some fun going to school or college by myself.
My boss bought one of these for his wife,(I believe an Abarth model), and they both love it. Same color as this one, and I believe an auto also. I think I would prefer the Miata's naturally aspirated engine also, I would never even consider one without the manual. It is a nice looking car!
That’s a good question. I am not sure Joe but possibly. It’s certainly a good looking car also but I would be afraid of the reliability and ability to service it with Fiat pulling out of the US market. 🤔

I kinda like this 124 and I like the price and the smart easy to use top. I don't care much for the auto and with 22lbs of boost I doubt that much more could be pulled out of that small motor which is the deal breaker. Had they given this some real power they might still be selling them.
My son has an Abarth Spider, and at 33000 it needs both rear hubs replacing because the suspension bushes are not available separately. Thankfully they are covered by warranty because they are almost £4500 to replace. But how long will they last?
That is both gross for cost and mileage. But given the cost, I bet the next time you need them there will be an aftermarket option. Or just burn them out and replace them with polyurethane bushings (preferably greasable to avoid squeaks).
i personally think this is a gorgeous car, one of my favorites. I would never buy a fiat unless i plan on swapping the engine and just about everything else inside though

For a first car to learn manual , this car is definitely a great choice . Although I prefer a Miata this is still a great choice
I agree with you!
Joe you know I luv ya, but those are 12 spoke rims. Great way to keep us on our toes!
Someone has been working his tris. Great review as always, Joe!
Thanks for saying that!
We liked our first one so much, we bought a second. For the price, you can't beat the performance/look combo.
Mr. Raitis thanks to your reviews I finally bought a new mazda MX-5 rf.
Thanks for telling me this! Ill pick up mid week and check that out!!🏁✊
Just got an abarth one last month and ended up moving. Sucks for moving, but it's fun for everything else
Killing it Joe.
Thanks brother for saying that!
@@RaitisRides You’re welcome man, definitely well deserved.
Thanks for sharing that great input!
Great summary of the vehicle. both critical and complimentary. I learned a lot. Thanks
I drove one today in the mountains of Virginia and loved it!
Really good review, thanks - one of the best I have seen on the 124.
7:04 Holy mother of depreciation, from 30k to 18k on only 13,000 miles...
Might be worth taking a gamble on an older one if it keeps depreciating at that rate for lol
They’ll be giving it away for free before it hits 30k miles.
@@hse6144 Not true, Already going back up in value, at least the 6Speed Manual Abarth version.
@@nelsonperez1577 Yeah they are up well above 20k again. Dunno if that will hold next year though.
@@nelsonperez1577 it's because of the chip shortage, it's selling for just over MSRP now. Since they're only doing 1 generation I think it'll become a very rare car in 10-20 years, same as happening with the old miata's.
lol just sold my wife's 2017 Rav4 hybrid with 95k miles last week. Bought it for 29k new and got 21k selling it to a dealer (no trade in).
I just purchased this car and am getting it tomorrow. Super excited :) I'm trading in my c300 for this. I think this will be a lot better on gas.
That is so awesome! Congrats!
Usb down passenger side way down at dashboard where car has glove box down to that
The only issue I have (I have a 2017 Classica) is getting parts. Someone rear ended me and I'm still waiting for a new bumper. The car's are GREAT! Over 30,000 mi and couldn't be happier....and I had a Miata a few years back, but liked the styling and ride in the Spider much more.
Back to the 70's for Fiat in North America
You forget
A hidden space of both seats
This is true
Softball in your car? I like it brother! Good presentation including the sound effects when you open the roof opening and close!
Thanks for letting me share the cars and some laughs!
@@RaitisRides I am thinking of buying one soon.. Used. But....I am in Cali. : D
How timely! I was literally just looking at one of these things as something I might buy in the near future.
I read your mind! Thanks for letting me share it with you!
Loved my 2017 black 124 spider!!!!!! Some ...ch t-boned it at a 4 way stop.
I wholeheartedly recommend this vehicle! I've owned mine for a year now and I love it to death. It's a GREAT ride. I daily drive this and haven't had any issues.
@@Bretana That’s good to hear. I really love the MX-5 RF but I think I prefer the looks of the 124.
@@marcusmcneal7453 I was trying to decide between that car and the 124 Spider. I loved the more aggressive look that the 124 has and ended up going with that. I feel like you can't go wrong with either car.
Can a 2017 engine fiat work on a 2018 car ?
a brother from a different mother (Miata).......
I'm torn between this and same year Miata. i prefer the Italian styling of the Fiat, but I'm worried it's not as fun to drive as the Miata. This is such a good looking car!
I know how you feel!
Even though it was a niche product, this is the only competitive car they had here. With this and the 500 gone, they’re basically done unless they come up with something else. The 500X and 500L won’t cut it. It’s too bad.
I really appreciate your great input!
I can't wait to buy mine.
Purchase 2 and splice the frame just enough to have a back seat and make the canvas roof seal
A future collectable.
From engine stand point I’ll go the Mazda route? Data? This 1.4L Fiat Turbo is one of the most reliable engines ever built!
If you already have a daily use car, maybe it would worth the risk.
Speakers suck in the Lusso! Still love the car!
Fiat 124: "I am based off the Mazda Miata."
Toyota Supra: "Hold my beer."
Joe, I would definately buy this over the Mazda version. Although I believe Fiat should have made their own version of this car. The people who want "Italian" do not (usually) want Japonese.
I worked for Fiat in 1978-80 and sold 124 Spiders brand new in NorCal. They were around $10k and that was considered expensive in 1978. ha ha
Thanks for sharing that great input from your experience!
I own this Lusso (manuel 6speed)
in red..sorry..passione rosso😁
and silber mirrors. 10 spoke wheels and the classic 4 spoke wheels(for winter and summer).
I love my car...and it is fast enough 😉.
Next year trip to italy💓 again.
Greetings from germany, the country without speedlimit😎👍
(why americans buy cars with more than 50 Horsepower, when the speedlimit is 60mph🤔)
The original 1966 Fiat 124 Spider did NOT have the power buldges on the hood. They came much later in the production run.
When I can get a used Abarth for $10k and put a bigger turbo and tune on it, I probably will get one for a weekend fun car.
Now we are talking Dave!
You can’t unless you’re looking for one totaled!
@@paulyakaitis3352 That’s why I said “when”. Every car runs through its depreciation curve. You can find these under $15k sometimes already.
The MX5 has track suspension the Fiat below the abarth is suspension tuned for control so it is softer.
Are u gonna make review of the fiat tipo and fiat tipo cross anytime soon?🤔(just want to know)
Looks alot better than a miata to me
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this one James.
I agree. I like the new miata. But it's styling Is a little bit too aggressive. But then again I think all new styling is too aggressive.
That was the most melancholic “On throttle” 😭
Keep going do the business of your channel 💯🙏
You are the man Jimmy!
This car looks gorgeous!
You should find a Toyota Yaris GR to review!
If only we had access to that car in the USA.
Morning Joe! FCA vehicle! LET'S GO!!!
It’s 2024. I own a 2019 124 Spider with the Lusso Plus trim. The Plus includes a 9-speaker Bose system. Also, the 6 speed manual transmission is much better, and gives it plenty of exhilarating zip. Plenty of “nimble”. I love my 124 Spider - in Mare Blue Metallic paint! I bought it in 2023, one previous owner, impeccable service record, 26k miles. $24k
Don’t buy an automatic!
I’m thinking to get this 124 but I’m concerning if it breaks, where I should take for the shop since the fiat will stop selling 124 in USA...
FCA will stop SELLING them in the USA, doesn’t mean they won’t service/repair them
You will still be able to get them serviced at a Fiat dealership.
You are 100% corect!
Awesome! Thank you guys!! Do you think 124 is worth to own or lease?
i thought i recognized this place 😂 Yessir glad theres sum Tampa youtubers
My boss bought one of these for his wife,(I believe an Abarth model), and they both love it. Same color as this one, and I believe an auto also. I think I would prefer the Miata's naturally aspirated engine also, I would never even consider one without the manual. It is a nice looking car!
I would say "Yes!!" but I own one so I'm probably biased lol
LOL! Thanks for sharing that input.
That’s a good question. I am not sure Joe but possibly. It’s certainly a good looking car also but I would be afraid of the reliability and ability to service it with Fiat pulling out of the US market. 🤔
This is the best car I’ve ever had
Thanks for sharing that great input!
Look at this pint sized Italian whip huh!!! I really do like them. Thanks for the review here Joe!!! Are you gonna win any drag races with this thing?...if your on throttle reaction is any indication, nope... You are so very right about that!
It was never meant to be a drag race car. It is a canyon carver. That said, if you invest a bit of money, switch to forged internals and bore and stroke it, it will be a totally different type of beast.
That styling! Just find a 6 speed manual
AGREED! Plus make it an Abarth
@@RaitisRides I purchased a 6 speed 2017 Abarth and added some much needed business (like 50 more HP) also fully spec. Best decision I've made for under $20Gs
Why does the fiat have the same display like Mazda
Cuz it's basically a Miata with an Italian body shell on top of the chassis.
This car is amazing for the price really
It does have that classic badge.
Damn i love this dude take on storage. A softball… if you like driving around with a softball lol
I kinda like this 124 and I like the price and the smart easy to use top. I don't care much for the auto and with 22lbs of boost I doubt that much more could be pulled out of that small motor which is the deal breaker. Had they given this some real power they might still be selling them.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on them.
Oh no they’re gonna stop production of this car?!?!
Yes sir!
Actually, production stopped in early 2019
My son has an Abarth Spider, and at 33000 it needs both rear hubs replacing because the suspension bushes are not available separately.
Thankfully they are covered by warranty because they are almost £4500 to replace. But how long will they last?
That is both gross for cost and mileage. But given the cost, I bet the next time you need them there will be an aftermarket option. Or just burn them out and replace them with polyurethane bushings (preferably greasable to avoid squeaks).
Woah I didn’t even know that there’s that type of fiat
Wonderful cruiser
ahh the fiata, nice choice!
Great ad for MIATA was my take after this review ended.
LOL That is where I would spend my money.
Review the Fiat 500 Abarth it’s a fun car!
So very true!
Would be cool wirh a metal folding antenna
This is true Anthony.
i personally think this is a gorgeous car, one of my favorites. I would never buy a fiat unless i plan on swapping the engine and just about everything else inside though

I appreciate you letting me share it with you!
What model of the 124 was this?
Classica, Uburna, Lusso, Or Abarth?
Lusso
Looking at both currently in US (Maryland) . Question for those who own either - how is this servicing? I'm older (62) and remember the old Fix It Again Tony for FIAT - had an RX-7 when i was younger and loved. As I am not a self mechanic I'm wondering what the costs might run on service/maintenance - thanks.
Very good questions.
It still amazes me that after all these years people still shit on this car without even knowing where it comes from...
Tell ‘em to try and find one! I just bought a 2020 used with 12000 miles. Love it just love to look at it!
