Sorry about the terrible 360 cabin footage. We were on a time crunch and sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do to get the shot. Also, a few other budget roadsters that didn't make our cut were the Mustang Ecoboost Convertible, 370Z Roadster, and Mini Convertible S, mainly because they were too dang heavy.

Also they are S as convertibles. The 3 chosen were built to be topless.

I've had 2 of the 3 and I've driven all of them. I prefer the 124. My experience with the S2K ride was different than his...I thought it was harshest. Not sure if I had a different year or package. But the biggest drawback of the S2K, by a mile, is the steering. It was one of the earliest applications of electric power steering and it had all the feedback of my dad's Oldsmobile. The Miata/Fiata have dramatically better steering feel.

Awesome review. Thanks for the comparison. The new miata I test drove definitely had a similar feeling to my S2K, but lacked HP.
I do feel that the drag race was a bit botched in the video. 6000rpm+ is where the power is. Same goes for the lap time. The S2000's Advantage is the 8000 rpm rev limiter, later shifts etc. You did mention confidence in driving the mistake and s2000 vs your own Abarth so that is a big * where I feel the S2k would still come out on top.
    Again thanks for the comparison.

Thank you for the review! I don't want to be rude or anything but did you keep the S2k constantly in VTEC? below VTEC it drives like a standard civic so if you want to be fast, you have to keep it constantly over 5k revs and rev it out to the limiter. Just how Tsuchya drove in Best Motoring. As an owner i think the S2K can do much better but yes, it is a car you have to spend time with and practice which is not easy to drive.

Hey so out of curiosity, what do you guys use to record sound in your videos, such as you talking? Let me know in a reply!
The S2000 is a really cool car. Very interesting machine. I wish Honda would make a new iteration of it.
Perfect recipe for that car, I agree.
I like the spec on your 124. It’s very nice in person too. That’s so cool how you can reset the tune to stock by switching modes haha. Wicked
Wife can’t drive stick? Teach her for fun sometime!
I just hate seats with no lateral support. My passat falls victim to this too
I just got a bmw ad on your video. Congratulations!
I saw a Miata in this same color yesterday evening, took a ride in a red one last year. It’s a neat car
What is that gigantic shift knob LMAO
I can’t wait to see the revised handling course. It gets better every time
Wow the S2000 is actually winning. I’m glad my money was in the right place haha
From a dig is where the Honda suffers the most. It’s heavier than it’s competition.
Oh this is gonna be cool!
I’m liking the 360 camera too
I like how you crossed the hold short line without ATC clearance 😅
The Miata seems very well rounded for this course. I’m liking the time it’s making so far
Oh man your face is distorted on the 360 cam this time haha
For how old the S2000 is, it’s nice to see it performing this well
I find it interesting how the lotus still sounds better than all 3 of these cars, and weighs so much less!
Interesting results. The VTEC on the S2000 is pretty special honestly
That’s awesome. The stats are looking great for the s2000
Ah yes Great first pick. It would be mine too. My second would be the 124 for sure
We need to run my passat around a track sometime to see how the grocery getter does
    Fiata lol. Nice name
I liked this one quite a bit. It would be awesome to see more of these, I’m glad the road course finally came together. Seems to have helped a ton
I’ll buy a t shirt once my car gets fixed, need to make sure I have enough money to do so. I like the new design quite a bit, but personally, the old, sleeker one was still pretty dope. Anyways, let me know about what you guys use to record sound in your videos in a reply, and again, happy Father’s Day. Good luck shooting today with the uh, angry snakes 😉

Former ND and S2K (AP1) owner. Can't say I agree with much (if any) of your opinions on the Miata.
Bad clutch feel? S2000 has a more modern interior? Worst feeling transmission? Harsh ride?
Feel like I'm taking crazy pills. The ND box is probably one of the best gearboxes in production outside of Porsche. They ride fine, the interior is MILES above the S2K, and I really don't understand how you lost to the fiata in the drag races or handling. The ND1 smoked the Fiata in straight line speed, and the ND2 widened that gap significantly.
I've done roll races against my buddies AP1 in my ND as well. S2K never pulls away. Shifting at 7k or something? None of the race results make sense.
Definitely feel like you went into this with a bias against the Miata and it reflected in the review.

I'm sorry... but no one drives around in the 124 out of sport mode and the auto is known to be more laggy than the manual. 4k-5k rpm to move... yeah not in sport mode (stock) it comes to life.

Important to remember two things about the s2000: 1. it was bought new for about 50k in 2023 dollars so it’s not apples to apples 2. It’s fun quotient falls off dramatically if you’re not driving it at the high end of the rev range (some of us don’t want to thrash our cars whenever we want to enjoy them)
I wouldn’t trust the fiata long term from a reliability perspective. Or at least it’s not as good a bet as the other two (and with the Honda, you’re likely getting 15 yo car that’s been beat on for its life)
The narrator is probably one of 100 people on planet earth who don’t like the mx-5’s manual. Not sure why he doesn’t like it.
Lastly - best to try and convince the wife to learn manual. She’s leaving fun on the table.

First rule if you are going to sell an underpowered roadster is for it to look uncommonly beautiful. It seems to me that Mazda needed to spend a few more dollars at conception on a proper car designing firm. As is, it's got middling to bad looks in addition to being as common as toyotas. 124 Spider checks the right boxes.

As a S2000 owner I'm biased, but Mazda deserves a lot of credit for carrying on with the Miata. It represents one of the last of a dying breed of cars as fewer and fewer people are interested in driver's cars as time marches on, (especially in a roadster configuration as very few like soft tops these days). The Miata's sales figures reflect this as they were in a constant rate of decline until the pandemic came along and threw everything out of whack - just look what happened with motorcycle sales in general or S2000 prices in particular during the past year. Even with the pandemic boost, Miata sales were nowhere close to where they were years ago. The vast majority of people have no interest in driving, they just want to get from point A to point B safely. The bottom line is that in a couple of decades when everyone is driving EV's and no one will be building internal combustion engines any longer, those who have owned any of these cars will look back and realize just how fortunate they were to experience them.

  • @machineslave3
    @machineslave3 3 роки тому +90

This is the first time I have ever heard someone say the Miata has a harsh ride. Having owned both an S2K and an ND I can personally say the S2K was much harsher. It’s one of the reasons I gave it up. That and the gearbox was temperamental. I respect your driving ability but IMO I think saying the Miata is harsh is incorrect.

    • @machineslave3
      @machineslave3 3 роки тому +9

@@soilent9618 Looks tend to be subjective. I don’t think the fiat looks the best, especially in its base trim. In this trim it’s not bad, but I still prefer the Miata and S2K. My biggest issue is he chose an automatic over a manual. While the S2K has a nice snick snick feel, the Miata has more of a rifle bolt action. A little longer but still satisfying. And he’s also wrong about the clutch. It’s progressive and catches over a long period of travel. It’s very easy to live with. Now that I think on it everything he said about the Miata flies in the face of what everyone else has said. My thought it he went in with a bias against it. It won 3rd place in C&Ds best drivers car shootout, but no, it’s harsh and an automatic Fiat is better to drive.

I was considering an alfa 4C also but decided to settle with the little Honda. Stick OEM sized A052 on it, it will roll a bit but damn it's fast middle corner with those relatively small (and therefore less costly) tires. I'm tempted to do a few little mods to enhance it. The 'Fiata' is now out of production due to poor sales, and just doesn't look as good as the real Miata. But the Fiata would be a great car to pick up second-hand. The Mazda is not about straight line speed or power, it a very competent lightweight and modern convertible, it's very trackable and can be easily be upgraded with all sorts of mods. Also lots of safety and comfort features, and unlike it's Fiat cousin, it's still in production! The MX-5 gets my vote.
