  • Опубліковано 15 січ 2014
  • This 26 minute documentary -- made by Oxford Film and Television and narrated by David Thewlis -- tells the story of Damien Hirst's first solo exhibition in the Middle East ('Relics', QMA, Doha: 10 October 2013 -- 22 January 2014). The film charts the monumental preparations the exhibition required, and investigates a selection of the artist's key works including 'Leviathan': Hirst's largest ever shark sculpture, unveiled for the first time in Doha. Containing compelling footage of some of the most iconic artworks of our time, it also includes exclusive interviews with Damien himself, as well as key figures from the contemporary art world and those involved in the staging of Hirst's largest ever retrospective.
The exhibition forms part of a series of cultural initiatives organised by QMA in order to foster discussions and cultural exchange between the UK and Qatar. It forms part of Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture which celebrates and showcases the deep-rooted bilateral relations between Qatar and the UK.

The most revealing quote by Damien Hirst: "I wanted to create a feeling that you were in the wrong gallery or not in a gallery." This window into the Hirst's ethos elucidates a consistent theme in all of his works - "Art" that does not feel like art.
Duchamp started this trend of conceptual repurposing of found objects with his Ready Mades series in which he successfully flustered the art world and public with the permanent detachment of the recognition of art linked exclusively to drawing, painting and sculpture.
Hirst has gone a step further now by provoking confusion in the viewer to wonder if they are even in a gallery at all - turning the gallery or museum walls into a pharmacy or natural history museum. A sense of wonder that feels less like 'wow' and more like 'what the hell?' A feeling akin to of being duped by a conniving prankster. On the side of the coin, it could conjure a sense of elation that all life can be framed into art and freedom heard in the crashing down of gallery walls.
Hirst's art is loud and obnoxious in an already cacophonous world. His work makes me feel patronized and generally bums me out - even from this distance - and I will pay to go see his work when I have the chance.

Greg Caneer I get the feeling Hirst is well aware his art is completely boring and cheap on the surface. Hirst leaves it to the fans to give his work intellectual purpose because without it you're faced with the reality of Hirst work i.e a plastic skull with plastic diamond stuck to it.

ok, i am a nobody in this world but i just wanted to think this thought out loud and see how people react to it...
i agree how his exhibition promotes the idea that art can be made using anything, andi do marvel at how impactful his work has been in opening many eyes and forcing people to witness rather than see: his art and his perspective of life.
that is in many ways what art is supposed to do. art is self expressions that leads to a better world... art is where you make use of the resources given to you and create with them something that makes the world a better place.
i absolutely love the polka dots work... the floating balls displays and the animal restorations, and the way he's posed them and suspended them ever so perfectly in fluid is ever so breathtaking, and marvelous example of the timelessness of art. i would love to be a part of restorations like that!
however, i found the severed animal head exhibit extremely disgusting and outrageous. i ask only that people take a moment and acknowledge the resources available to them before they exploit it in this way.
if you think about it, (excluding a few examples) art is something that benefits only humans and has little to no use to other species on earth. in fact, nature in itself is art simply because it exists.
many of the things that Damien Hirst is showing here is not artwork but a concept... a statement... a thought... an idea. i feel he is an activist and not an artist...
if these inhumane things like the severed animal head, where articles placed here as a part of his artwork stand as little more than examples of how they have been exploited and deprived of their original purpose and meaning in this world... andif they can be plundered and displayed as art merely for the amusement of humans, then one can also call vandalism and murder as art! i just wish to remind people that according to me, art is something where you use what is available to you, to create something better... and not merely exploit them for a lesser cause... art is where you give meaning for something as unremarkable as a stone or a blank sheet of paper... not something where you claim to be showing someone your philosophy by offending them. i wish to remind you that so many people are offended only because they find that the articles used in this exhibition are deprived of their original meaning and displayed nakedly in this exhibition in the name of a kind or art that so many cannot perceive.
once again, i feel the need to clarify that i am able to understand his ideas and the need to bring them to life in the manner he did, but i am unable to understand why he couldn't think of a better mode to express himself.
i feel like this wasteful practice of stupefying audiences should neither be praised, nor be encouraged... surely, he can come up with a more resourceful way delivering his ideas. if you consider art something that does nothing but spark up debates and controversies, i would suggest that we not forget other better and more important uses of art...
this is just my humble opinion. i would love to hear thoughts on this from the rest of the world... :)

Chihuly, Dali, Warhol used the same method as Hirst, yet noone seems to think they are "charlatans" in contrast to Hirst. In Dali's day he was also criticized for commercializing his art, but in the end everyone agreed he was inspired by genius. When I review the depth of Hirst, I find some very interesting things happening. Noone says a director is any less of an artist for getting actors to perform as needed for the piece and noone criticises a director for making their art the cerebral instead of the act of performing the film in front of the camera. I know nothing, but Socrates and Damien Hirst are pretty smart.
