  • Reading and understanding the lines on a tape measure can be a bit confusing at first, but it's easy to learn with a little practice.
First, take a look at the tape measure and locate the zero mark. This mark is typically at the end of the tape measure and represents the starting point for all measurements.
Next, look for the longest line on the tape measure, which is usually a numbered inch line. Each inch line is divided into smaller lines, which represent fractions of an inch. For example, there are typically four smaller lines between each inch line, which represent quarters of an inch.
To read a measurement, start at the zero mark and look at where the object you're measuring ends on the tape measure. If the object lines up with the 2 inch mark and the third line past it, you would record the measurement as 2 and 3/16 inches.
It's important to note that some tape measures may also have metric measurements on them. In this case, look for the centimetre lines and smaller lines that represent millimetres.
With a little practice, reading and understanding the lines on a tape measure will become second nature.
