I’ve been using Slicex for as long as I’ve had FL and I prefer it over Edison almost every time, but not one video on UA-cam has as this much articulation and understanding that I don’t want to just know how to do something, I need to know what and why I’m doing something a certain way. I don’t really subscribe to any tutorial channels, but I definitely subscribed to this one. Saw you’re comment at the top and I was like, “Damn, I feel that.” 🤟🏼💯
When checking the length of a note in the piano roll, you can double click on the note. The duration is shown there and also editable directly. No need to move the note in the piano roll or measure using the playmarker.

Not my discovery but to get a play-through effect (for those who don't know, meaning the sample doesn't stop at the end marker and plays till you let go). Delete the sustain node, make a new one, drag it all the to the top and drag it really far back considerably and voila, more freedom for better unique sampling but make note: it will have to be recorded.
I never bothered to learn SliceX but it's 1AM and I wanted to do something new. This literally taught me everything I needed/wanted to do. Thank you so much! Not sure why there are 7 dislikes on this smh some people just hate to hate.

Thanks for all the tips! I remember when started to learn how to use Slicex from scratch I was trying to remake Numb / Encore by Jay-Z & Linkin Park with the sample of Numb. A thing that I do when I use melodic samples is in the ADSR part I select single curve 3 and put it to 100% just to avoid de click at the beginning of the chop
Oooh I'll have to look into this. It's funny that you started off doing remixes/remakes like that too. I used to do that type of stuff when I was super young and first got curious about music

Great video! There is one thing that bothers me though - let's say I stretch my chops to a certain length (in miliseconds) using the alt+t, but if I later decide to change my BPM I would have to re-stretch my chops again (is that correct?). Can I stretch the chops in a way that will respect the grid itself and adjust to the correct lenght when I change the BPM?

It was a great teaching, but you teach really fast. I found myself hitting the rewind button a couple of times saying, "what did he just say." Your comfort level is obvious. I just began using slicex in a song last night. Very helpful. Is there a way to drag the individual slices directly into the playlist and rename them, or rename the slices within slicex?
one feature thats missing from the original REFLEX plugin "old school vst" is after timestretches to be able to choose any bpm and it will follow, like the fruity playlist that if you drop a 2bar loop and set it for 2bars in the channel setting that loop will adapt to any tempo.
Bruh you are the absolute GOAT. I just learned so much. A lot of sampling vids are just like "Drag sample into Edison, find your loop, drag it into the playlist" which is fine, but not many people are out here doing actual sampling tutorials with SliceX. I had a question about zero crossing. Does it matter if the 2 lines meet and they're not perfectly in the center (think Edison's green line as the center)? I've always heard that you want to try and get as close as you can to the center when chopping up loops to avoid the popping/cracking, but now I'm starting to wonder if that's even necessary. Should I even worry about that? Or just find zero crossing and not worry about how close it is to the green line? Hope this question makes sense.
Thank you so much man, I am glad you dug the video! For me, I love sampling so getting into deeper concepts with sampling is something I definitely want to do more of. As for slicing on zero crossing, it's something that is a good idea, but having said that it's not the end of the world if you don't. My no means will it ruin your beat. It will just create a click noise every time (and how loud depends on how far off the zero crossing you are). Having said that, if you can't hear it, then I wouldn't worry. Some guys need to get EXACTLY on the zero crossing but for me, it's not that big of a deal if you just get close enough. Also, a lot of the time other sounds you layer on top (like drums) might end up drowning it out anyways. I wouldn't fret about it too much unless it's super audible and it is distracting in your beat.
Super Nice Tutorial, Every time I would move the orange markers sample points , my notes would get jumbled up and mess up everything I made . Just by clicking "Auto Dump" fixes the problem, Thanks 😊 👍
Ayy awesome man, glad to see you got something out of the video! I felt like most of the SliceX videos I've seen didn't show many of the features so I thought it'd be a good idea to cover it. Were there any features that you use often that I didn't go over? I'm curious
@@NavieD It's two other slicing methods that I use that are very useful. 1.) Right click where the sample title is (to the right of the deck selection, directly above the sample itself) and it will bring up the sample properties. Go to the TEMPO tab and type in how many beats, not bars, your sample is then accept. Right click auto-slicing and select small, medium, or large grid slicing to chop the sample on the grid. [ex. a 4 bar loop is 16 beats. following those steps and selecting "medium grid slicing" it will auto chop your sample into the 16 beats.] 2.) For samples that you can't figure out the right tempo or your chops are all off you can chop the sample while playing it. Just click play in Slicex and then click "add marker" when it reaches the points you want your chops. I also like to sustain the chops by going to the volume envelope grabbing that point that is on the "S" marker and bring it to the beginning of the envelope then right click to make another point and drag that out. now when you press the keys, or pads, your chop will play all the way out instead of you having to hold it for the duration or the chop. Bonus tip: When you reverse your sample and your markers get flipped with the sample just click the "Slide succeeding points" button under the sample (the left and right arrow next to the magnet) then grab your first point and slide it to the beginning of the sample. That will drag the rest of the chops with it and keep the length of your chops.

Slicex needs an instant pitch and stretch feature. Pitching samples with Slicex is very inefficient. Great video btw

There is one thing that bothers me though - let's say I stretch my chops to a certain length (in miliseconds) using the alt+t, but if I later decide to change my BPM I would have to re-stretch my chops again (is that correct?). Can I stretch the chops in a way that will respect the grid itself and adjust to the correct lenght when I change the BPM?

It was a great teaching, but you teach really fast. I found myself hitting the rewind button a couple of times saying, "what did he just say." Your comfort level is obvious. I just began using slicex in a song last night. Very helpful. Is there a way to drag the individual slices directly into the playlist and rename them, or rename the slices within slicex?
one feature thats missing from the original REFLEX plugin "old school vst" is after timestretches to be able to choose any bpm and it will follow, like the fruity playlist that if you drop a 2bar loop and set it for 2bars in the channel setting that loop will adapt to any tempo.

Bruh you are the absolute GOAT. I just learned so much. A lot of sampling vids are just like "Drag sample into Edison, find your loop, drag it into the playlist" which is fine, but not many people are out here doing actual sampling tutorials with SliceX.
I had a question about zero crossing. Does it matter if the 2 lines meet and they're not perfectly in the center (think Edison's green line as the center)? I've always heard that you want to try and get as close as you can to the center when chopping up loops to avoid the popping/cracking, but now I'm starting to wonder if that's even necessary. Should I even worry about that? Or just find zero crossing and not worry about how close it is to the green line? Hope this question makes sense.
Thank you so much man, I am glad you dug the video! For me, I love sampling so getting into deeper concepts with sampling is something I definitely want to do more of.
As for slicing on zero crossing, it's something that is a good idea, but having said that it's not the end of the world if you don't. My no means will it ruin your beat. It will just create a click noise every time (and how loud depends on how far off the zero crossing you are). Having said that, if you can't hear it, then I wouldn't worry. Some guys need to get EXACTLY on the zero crossing but for me, it's not that big of a deal if you just get close enough. Also, a lot of the time other sounds you layer on top (like drums) might end up drowning it out anyways. I wouldn't fret about it too much unless it's super audible and it is distracting in your beat.

Super Nice Tutorial, Every time I would move the orange markers sample points , my notes would get jumbled up and mess up everything I made . Just by clicking "Auto Dump" fixes the problem, Thanks 😊 👍

Ayy awesome man, glad to see you got something out of the video! I felt like most of the SliceX videos I've seen didn't show many of the features so I thought it'd be a good idea to cover it. Were there any features that you use often that I didn't go over? I'm curious
@@NavieD It's two other slicing methods that I use that are very useful.
1.) Right click where the sample title is (to the right of the deck selection, directly above the sample itself) and it will bring up the sample properties. Go to the TEMPO tab and type in how many beats, not bars, your sample is then accept. Right click auto-slicing and select small, medium, or large grid slicing to chop the sample on the grid. [ex. a 4 bar loop is 16 beats. following those steps and selecting "medium grid slicing" it will auto chop your sample into the 16 beats.]
2.) For samples that you can't figure out the right tempo or your chops are all off you can chop the sample while playing it. Just click play in Slicex and then click "add marker" when it reaches the points you want your chops.
I also like to sustain the chops by going to the volume envelope grabbing that point that is on the "S" marker and bring it to the beginning of the envelope then right click to make another point and drag that out. now when you press the keys, or pads, your chop will play all the way out instead of you having to hold it for the duration or the chop.
Bonus tip: When you reverse your sample and your markers get flipped with the sample just click the "Slide succeeding points" button under the sample (the left and right arrow next to the magnet) then grab your first point and slide it to the beginning of the sample. That will drag the rest of the chops with it and keep the length of your chops.
@@worldwidejahnee oh wow, thanks so much for the in-depth reply man. I find auto slicing to be pretty irritating how dysfunctional it can be at times, but it sounds like using your technique of setting the tempo beforehand can help alleviate that problem. Great insights dude!
