Everyone wants to make the voice deeper... or at least I want😂 But it makes the sound more pleasing to listen to a lot of times, just a small adjustment can make the dialouge better. I do not have Final Cut unfortunatly and i quit my Adobe subscription. Too expensive. 60-70 Dollar every month! I had the student discount (60%) but now that has expired, might have to make a new one on my brothers name who have a year left as a student. Is it possible to get FCP on windows as well, or is it just Mac? Great video!
If you have an older Mac you might want to make a short clip by making two cuts to change the EQ settings on. My i9 MBP is struggling after I put on an EQ and just touched the adjustment on a 55 min clip I have in the timeline.
Oh, and then copy them over to the other clips. Even better: Click "Save Effects Preset" and save it for your voice to apply to the next video you make.
hello Dylan your videos are great ,do you know any plugin for fcpx to change the voice completely that can still sounds natural?like documentary style audio. cheers keep up with this great video
You mean a deep, smooth documentary narrator voice? Unfortunately no :/ Trust me, I've looked. The best thing you can use is 'pitch' or 'monster' but I really don't recommend this. If you really need that type of voice, you could hire someone on Upwork of Fiverr.
Hey I don't quite understand what you mean. Do you mean you can't have your projects audio in surround and add a Channel EQ? If so, that's not true. You can.
Thanks, Dylan! I think with audio tutorials you really help FCP users making better videos. For many it is about editing and coloring, but audio is equally important, if not more. Lousy audio is more annoying and distracting than bad coloring. In my tutorial search for enhancing audio in FCP, some months ago, I found yours as one of the first and signed up for your channel. And now I am going to try to get my already deep voice a bit deeper 😎

This is nonsense. First of all, the actor's voice did not sound like Alvin and the Chipmunks when it was first captured in the filming of the scene. You did that to his voice in post, raising the pitch of his voice. Any audio professional (like me) would spot that instantly, as I did. Second, the notion of adding bass frequencies in EQ to a male voice to "add warmth" goes against everything I've ever learned about audio. Take it from a voice actor (me) who works with his voice every single day -- adding bass frequencies doesn't add "warmth." It adds MUD. And makes it harder for the voice to cut through and be clearly audible over whatever sounds (and/or music) it's riding over. Many of us VoiceOver talents know that the best bet to get the voice to be easily heard over whatever ambient noise they're talking over is to CUT the low end of the signal (and then compress it). What makes a male voice cut through is not the rich, warm low end. It's glottal fry, which is that phenomenon that happens when the larynx opens and closes at a rapid rate to create that vibration in the voice. Don't confuse "warmth" with MUD. There is a frequency range that can add warmth (and it can vary somewhat from voice to voice). This is best achieved in a frequency range a bit higher than the one you recommend boosting. For most voices, boosting down where you're boosting will only make it MUDDY. And female voices quite often don't even have any discernible signal down at that low end, so boosting gain at those low frequencies might not have any effect whatsoever on a lot of female voices.
Hey! So that beginning bit was a sarcastic joke. Obviously Arnold's voice doesn't sound like that. I really do appreciate your expertise though! I always thought that adding a bit of bass in the voice helped the voice to sound warmer, but it sounds like that's maybe not the call. Thanks for the information!
@@dylanjohndickerson -- Depends on what you're going for. "Warmth" can, indeed, be achieved with the right recipe of EQ. But generally speaking, I find that merely adding bass doesn't quite achieve it. If you have access to a Waves plug-in called the L3LL Multimaximizer, there's a setting in there called "Warm and Cozy." It does add some warmth, but not merely by adding bass. It's bass at just the right frequencies to avoid adding MUD. There's another Waves plug-in that has a really nice setting that adds bass. I liken it to the sound of an old RCA DX-77 ribbon mic. Now THERE'S some warmth for ya. It's the Waves Abbey Road Saturator. There's a setting in there called "Two Tubes Vocal" and it does pretty much what the name implies, replicating the sound of feeding the voice signal through a couple of old tubes. Very warm. I was trying it out in a beta vocal chain, but I actually found that it was TOO WARM (if you can imagine such a thing). Too much of a good thing, I guess you might say. And yes, I figured that opening bit HAD TO BE a joke. Just wanted to set the record straight for any newbies that might be misled by the hidden humor.
Uh...am I the only who thinks it sounds worse? Maybe ditch the suggestion to "put on your headphones" and try listening to this on a good set of reference speakers. While adding this much bottom might make it sound better on little speakers, it will overwhelm the bass on a good set of cones.
@@JeffBodeanCinema I think that ultimately depends on a lot of factors, however I have to disagree that a few decibels overwhelms your ears even with speakers. I suppose it’s a matter of opinion though and like I said it also depends on things like the type of microphone and the amount of bass already present in the RAW recording. I think it’s telling the as an effect in Final Cut Pro, Voice Over Enhancement has those regions raised a couple decibels. I really do appreciate opposing feedback though Jeff! I’m always up for a discussion so thank you 👊🏼
@@dylanjohndickerson Fair enough. Another way to look at it is that you are enhancing only the low freqs and not the highs. To my ears, it sounds like your mic was behind a pillow. Typically when I eq voice, I'll bring up the bass much like you did and some of the higher freqs while dipping those nasty middle freqs. And finally, don't forget the young ear/old ear issue. Young people tend to lower treble and raise bass since they can hear much higher freqs. Older people (like over 35) tend to raise the highs to compensate.
I suggest wearing headphones for this tutorial if you've got them! 🎧
