  • Caroline's got a phaser, and that's a big deal. Where most phasers guide you into one basic type of sound, the Arigato tosses you the keys and says "have fun", but without coming across as overwhelming. You don't need to hunt for good settings, just the good settings that will work for the song you're working on. Let's dive in.

“Huey Lewis mode…square.” “The mode switch goes from pasta maker to paper shredder.” Busting our chops about our iconography…and we’re totally here for it. Excellent clips and foamy sounds - thank you!

Your iconography and writing is top notch. I actually brought a bunch of your manuals into work one time as a good example of how to convey lots of technical information while still being engaging and brief. It's a talent.

Another great video! I regret that I only have one like to give.

I have loved everything I’ve heard from Phillipe. The Somersault is a near-perfect chorus and this certainty seems like a near-perfect phaser. Have you tried the square wave with the Crom pushing it? Looks like so much fun… can’t wait to give one a whirl. Thanks for continuing to make marvelous content. When are you going to kick out some merch?

It’s an instant classic, that’s for sure. Covers a bunch of phaser needs that I didn’t even know I had. I think Andy did the Crom + square wave thing in his video and I didn’t want to have mine sounding like an imitation, but yeah, those combos are super tasty.
I’m thinking about merch, maybe next year. Want to make sure the quality is there without being too expensive.

I have it vice-versa coming out of my organ but I'll have to flip them around and give it a shot

Love the Somersault too. Probably use it more than any other pedal. So damn versatile and that sound.... BROOO!!

more great sounds here, good sir. i sporadically attend Square Wave Anonymous (hi, i'm Jammy, i'm addicted to Square Wave since i first sang into a fan as a little kid), and this is a delightful example.
also, tertiary to the content, i must address the fashion sense displayed therein, both the host's shirt and the bass player's hat are to be ...coveted.

Thank You JammyPants. It’s such an amazing pedal, really leans into a lot of what I’ve liked from other pedals but with its own style. And I’m glad you always notice the fashion choices. I’m trying to get Stewart’s to sponsor the show.

Ahh, I see what you did there in the thumbnail! Very clever! As usual, very well played! P.s. Mr. Roboto!

You got it! It's an amazing pedal, lots of options and a good voice to it.

The "Aim" control appears to be an offset control that moves the entire sweep upwards and downwards in the frequency spectrum. Whenever I build a phaser for myself, I always like to include this type of control. Some songs like a gurgly sound and some prefer a more swirly tone. And this control lets you accomplish that.***
I like the inclusion of an easily adjustable trimmer for the "Havoc" control, so that the user can make the Arigato instantly go to a predetermined speed. I haven't done the experiment yet, but I'm curious about whether it can also be used to *slow down* the sweep on demand, by setting the Rate control very fast and setting the Havoc trimmer very slow. Perhaps Philippe can shed some light on this.
A pity there is no expression-pedal control, but if you have a friend handy who can work the Aim control, set the unit for square wave, fast speed, with higher feedback, and get your friend to work the Aim control. It will sound very much like a sample-and-hold filter. Nice.
Normally, I prefer to simply have a wet-level control for adjusting effect intensity, and a dry-lift toggle for creating vibrato, on my own modulation-pedal builds. I usually find very little utility in being able to dial in more wet than dry. For whatever reason, though, I find the Blend control on the Arigato useful across its full range. I like setting it to around 2:00 (i.e., a bit more wet than dry).
***If you own a Phase 90 or clone thereof, the bias trimpot inside CAN be used somewhat like the Aim control, ,and even turned into a panel-mount control, although only a portion of its rotation is usable.

Did Caroline sponsor this video? If so, first off, way to go! You should totally have pedal companies reaching out to you for your excellent videos. Also if so, you may wanna disclose that in the future; I guess some internet folks can get weird about it. Regardless, always good videos. I love this channel.

I’ve never taken any money or product from anyone for any videos. This is just a hobby

If that’s what you’d prefer, I completely respect that, but personally you’re plenty good enough to make some coin doing this.

@@al271987 Thanks, man. I'm not against the idea at all. I've gotten offers from a few companies that I'd rather not support, but the way I see it, the videos I put out right now, all they have to do is make me happy. I've seen how petty and manipulative some companies can get, just by talking with some other friends who work in the influencer/advocate space, and the last thing I want is for this to feel like a second job... my day job keeps me busy enough.
That said, I'm hoping to get something lined up for 2023 that'll greatly help the channel without making me feel icky and gross. Fingers crossed on that one, and I'll definitely be fully disclosing any time there's deals behind the scenes. I'm a big believer in transparency like that. Caroline, Greer, Keeley... they're just companies that I've come to trust when it comes to the stuff they put out, and I'd love to work with them, but they've all got pretty full rosters of people *way* more talented, so I'm happy to just show off my new toys :)

Just throwing it out that the name of the pedal might be a nod to the vocal or vowel sounds of the phaser - like the song mr roboto. Remember that vw commercial with tony (buster) from arrested development - that was a sweet commercial featuring mr roboto.

Someone had to have asked this before, but... Why do you always wear the beanie when you're playing bass? Is it like your bass-playing alter ego? Does the beanie improve your tone?

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  Рік тому

      It's a Tone Beanie(tm)
So the story is, years ago, I was playing in a band where the bass player always wore a beanie. We started in the winter, so I figured it was a warmth thing, then it got into spring and summer and he kept wearing it, and he was a big grumpy dude so I didn't dare ask about it. Anyway, he quit, and we were auditioning new bass players. First guy that showed up... wearing a beanie. So I just kind of decided that all bass players wear beanies all the time.
Also, it helps mix up the footage in the room so it's not just "the same dude" playing in a slightly different position as I change camera angles.
