HOW LONG BLUES - RAY HOOKER & RAY AUSTIN W. MARTIN SCHREIBER
. . . alright - so here is the last of the three tracks Messrs. Hooker and Austin recorded with me at Ray Austin's home studio in 1997. I already stated that I ain't all too proud of this one . . . but what the heck?! It's a cover of Leroy Carr and Scrapper Blackwell's 1928 recording "How Long Blues", although I think Ray Hooker (who sang lead on our version) didn't care too much about the original lyrics. But maybe you enjoy it anyway . . . :-)
p.s. The three Austin & Hooker tracks are only rough mixes - they were never properly mixed and left unfinished. The original multitrack tapes are probably lost and all I've got is a cassette copy of inferior quality. :-(
p.p.s. One thing I remember very well about this recording: Ray Austin (whose roots lay in jazz, which was his first musical love) did not only insist on playing trumpet here - he was also adamant about those last trumpet notes over the closing chord . .. and he couldn't care less that the other Ray and me didn't like 'em. To this day they don't make me happy at all (sorry, Ray!), but it's too late - I can't take 'em out again.

PARADISE - RAY AUSTIN & RAY HOOKER W. MARTIN SCHREIBER

As I've been asked to bring up more from the tracks I'd recorded with 'The Two Rays' (this certainly never was an official moniker!), I dug out what's left on cassette from those 1997 sessions. There are, however, some letdowns. First of all there are no more than just 3 songs on that tape - and having just listened back to them, I remembered why I have chosen to upload only "Tattler" in the fi...
EARTHQUAKE CITY - BARRY UPTON

Not too much I can say about this one here. Barry Upton has obviously always been some kinda British jack of all trades through diverse musical styles and genres. In the mid-90s he's been into the so-called new country scene and I caught his "Earthquake City" on the long since gone London-based 'Country Music Radio For Europe" (CMR). Enjoy!
HANGOVER BLUES - LOONEY TUNES

I saw 'The Looney Tunes' (from Switzerland) when they were playing the best live music club Basel ever had, the legendary 'Atlantis' (or the ''Tis', as the locals used to call it). My band at the time desperately tried to secure a gig at that venue - in vain. Three of us were in the 'Atlantis' audience when the 'Looneys' played there - and all of a sudden the vocal p.a. was silenced by a power ...

One last track from the "(Knäckebröd) Blues" releases, this is a cover of Johnny 'Guitar' Watson's 1955 single B-side "(I) Love To Love You", which - in the hands of Louise Hoffsten - sounds just like Watson might have written it especially for her. Enjoy!

Louise's rendition of the John Lee Hooker classic comes in the disguise of "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" by way of Staffan Astner on guitar with Christer Jansson adding some 'Led Zep'-like drum sounds. One of the true stand-out tracks from the 1998 book/CD-project "Blues" and the 2002 reissue "Knäckebröd Blues". Enjoy!

Louise Hoffsten and - ladies & gentlemen - Staffan Astner on guitar put their marks on "I Guess I'm A Fool", a song Memphis Slim had written and recorded for his eponymous 1961 Chess LP. Now this makes the hairs on my arms stand up and sends shivers down my spine . . . please enjoy!

THE SEDUCTION OF SWEET LOUISE - LOUISE HOFFSTEN

Two years after Swedish singer and harmonica player Louise Hoffsten was diagnosed with MS in 1996, she released a book called "Blues", which mirrored her dealing with the illness and her divorce. That book was accompanied by an excellent CD of new recordings. Four years later the CD saw a reissue under the title "Knäckebröd Blues". "The Seduction Of Sweet Louise" was written by Frankie Miller. ...

And here's a second track from the 'Moses Goes To Memphis' vaults (recorded in 2003). We slowed things down a bit for "Fool Who Knows" from the only album by 'Little Village'. This former band of mine was in brief existence from 2002 to 2003 - and for 2 gigs only. The whole project began already to fade when we were still in the process of recording for a purpose that had not been decided upon yet. Sadly not everybody's heart was really in it. What's left are just rough mixes of a few unfinished tracks - "Miracle" is one of 'em. It's a song by Swedish blues/rock/pop ...

The second part of my favourites from Frankie Miller's 1981 appearance on BBC Scotland's "In Concert" programme. The surprise here is the first track: "Cold And Rainy Night" (0:00) was originally recorded as a slow soul ballad for the non-LP B-side of the 1979 single "Good To See You" - here Frankie speeded it up and turned it into a blistering rock'n'roll song. I really hope it isn't like the BBC and The Old Grey Whistle Test, about which I was just reading an article regarding Sandy Denny, where Bob Harris says most of its early archive was wiped in 1976: "A couple of chaps with clipboards went in. Some material was rescued." None of Denny's; just the audio. But fingers are crossed!

I've read some folk saying her voice had lost so much by this stage in her life but I don't hear that myself. She always gets inside a song and her singing still takes you somewhere new. I wonder what it was like listening to these songs live or when she was alive? I find them almost unbearably coloured with melancholy all these years after given how immediate and present she comes across in the recordings.

Actually, in retrospect, she's not singing as badly as I remembered . . . [but] she shouldn't have done that concert." Colin Irwin (another journo) recalled her backstage before the gig being "an absolute nervous wreck, shaking, just marching up and down".
