When I was first getting started trapping, my fur buyer would throw out little tidbits of information to help me. For example, he asked me once, "what is the most important ingredient in fox trapping?" I thought, Oh I've got this: bed your trap solid as a rock, I said proud as can be. "Nope", he said. Well what could it be then? "The fox is the most important thing. You can make the best fox set ever made, but if there ain't no fox in that location, you ain't gonna catch one."

Russ Carmen and his trapping books told me things that I thought were crazy but he had good ideas about using wet leaves put down your lure and then put wet leaves on top so the smell stays put.

Stu four years ago I left a set by mistake and the landowner called me six weeks later and asked if I still had a set there because I had a coyote bouncing
good bait and lure will last indefinitely depending on how well it is protected from the elements
keep up the great videos Sir

You are 100% right. I think 95% is location 4% in the set and 1% is what is in the hole.
That's why you hear experienced trappers say LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION

Proof is in the video. Awesome job explaining it, and I know I'll get a lot of hate for this, but it's your channel run it the way you want, if you don't talk about bait/lure much that's ok. Stay safe, and God bless

We set a foothold and caught a bobcat. We could not check the trap the next day so we left it sprung, planning to reset it at a later date. Trail camera filmed a 2nd cat that night standing right in the trap bed.

I've never trapped in my life and have trapped 8 coyotes in 2 weeks and only had 4 traps the first week then added another 4. First night catch off a hot dog, caught them on raw chicken, bacon, and store-bought bait. Honestly the fresh meat has caught more than store-bought. The biggest thing i believe is just get the things in the ground and see what happens. Greatly informative videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them.

The coyote was sending a trap because he could smell your scent. I’ve had them dig the trap up whenever I’ve left too much scent of my own behind and never throw it.

  • @stephenzimmer7875

BINGO! Find turds and tracks...set a trap! Too much lure and bait in the hole...defeats its purpose. I re-bait and lure after a sets been flooded or on a re-make. In Pennsylvania I can wait weeks before catching a coyote - in Kansas, I typically begin catching on the first night. Less coyotes with much more cover and range in Pennsylvania...many more coyotes with smaller ranges in Kansas. Ron Popel once said..."set it and forget it" - a good set made on sign needs to be left alone, until it connects!

Last year here in Montana i caught three wolves, the first was caught in a trap that was set for 30 days, the second in a trap set for 40 days and the last was set for 58 days. I refreshed them once during that time but didn't really need to and maybe shouldn't have anyway.

    “I suck at Trapping “🤣🤣
You took the words right out of my mouth. I have a big head big body bobcat on my cameras. Have a set , I think it looks darn tempting, the cat took the bait then went in front of camera just off to the side of the set and ate the bait like “is that the best trick you got” now camera is on the set.. the cat is on the other cameras, but I think the set is where it needs to be.
Do you ever run into spiteful cats , that know they are on camera?

I know my percentages are higher without cameras, I don't have the best no glow no light cameras though. From my experience if you get cheap cameras they will tell on you.

I understand, some deer, cats and coyotes don’t mind, the ones that are test the range and move just beyond.
I get good pics, but hunt in the blind spots. I use some cameras to move shy ones where I want and try to hunt there

Thanks for the great content. One question I have, do you feel lunar phases play a role in good K9 activity? I’ve noticed more activity coming up on a new moon and a day or so after then activity falls off. Do you think it’s a hoax? Or is there something to it! This would be a cool topic to see you cover if you have any belief in it!!

The question shouldn't be will an odor be noticed by a coyote, but will the odor be enough to have him really work the set. Without a doubt, a set will be investigated by a coyote long after it was made- but on a sporadic and random basis. And thats fine if the objective is to set traps, and leave them out for weeks and maybe months at a time. but if the objective is to catch coyotes quick and be on your way- rebaiting and/or reluring does add coyotes. Say you set traps for a week, and catch the cream. A good reluring/baiting with different scents, far from spooking coyotes, often gets a reluctant one to commit, and when that reluring and rebaiting is done- there is a noticeable bump in the catch over the next day of two. And after a big rain, or big snow- rebait/luring after a couple of days is the norm- you don't want a coyote to know about your set, you want him to have no choice. Put him in the mindset to stay at, dig at, work the set. And urine is the same way- it dissipates after a fairly short time, and urine should be reapplied at least once a week- and any remake gets nearby sets refreshed with urine as well. I do enjoy your videos, and as my wife says I like seeing what you do in rain/mud/snow.
