I've owned pretty much every popular type of guitar at one point, but my number one for the last five years has been a PRS. But it's all up to taste - What music you play, your influences, aesthetics, etc. No harm in having a different opinion and you've done that being completely fair by pointing out the positives and highlighting the quality. Thanks Dave, from a PRS fan ❤
chapters "drop down" and "just a little" absolutely beautiful playing. chapters "the silver skies" and "waltz away in the fire" sounded very pink floyd at times. I always enjoy your uploads! Thank you, Dave!
Okay - For all of those gifted with golden ears - If this was an audio only clip, how many would swear it's Dave just jamming as usual on a Fender Strat?
Interesting hearing your experience with it. I never got on with PRS and never tried a silver sky until earlier this month and it honestly changed my life. My silver sky se is my favorite guitar I’ve ever played at any price point. I’ve gone through WAY to many strats and to me the silver sky is what I’ve always dreamed a Strat should be. PRS is just killing it right now.
I forgot to say how much I love and respect you Dave! Absolutely love this video! My first love is an acoustic, then a strat! Love, music, and you are ETERNAL!!! Peace and Love! Flanger not anger!
Very valid reasons for not bonding with the instrument, but I will say this. I put this video on while my wife was in a doctor’s appointment and I was trying to calm a 6 month old down in the parking lot. Your playing did the trick and I really enjoyed it myself! Cheers brother.
Dave, you've totally described exactly how I feel about PRS guitars after having played quite a few and having owned 2 for a few months, each. Great quality guitars that just don't speak to me.
I'm more of a LP guy and I've never cared for any PRS models really. But when the McCarty .594 singlecut came out in the SE line, I bought a standard in vintage cherry. It needed some upgrades to the tuners and electronics, but now it's found a place in my collection for good. The pickups are excellent, and the guitar does stuff the others just can't. I can recommend it without hesitation.
Well, you might not like it but sitting here on a Friday night in my "Good Gravy" tee shirt your playing has brought a gleamer of joy to my evening. Thanks Dave!
I don't have any problems with PRS and I own 2 of them. I like Humbuckers and the PRS ones are pretty good. They aren't my favourites but I wouldn't be without them. Horses for courses as they say. Keep shining Dave.
I own the exact guitar Dave is playing and i absolutely love it! Sounds and plays beautifully. Fits my hands which is what matters really. Like the neck better than my PRS single cut SE Korean made. It's not a strat copy, it has It's own personality. There's a girl for every boy and you gotta find yours....
Thanks for another great vid Dave! The guitar may not be to your taste, but you sure made it cry and sing! Some of your best playing yet, sometimes you have to just be up for a fight!
Dave, my man, The Silver Skies would be an amazing accompaniment to Stephanie Greztinger's Reckless Love. Both hers and yours feel like someone opening up their soul to God and letting the music pour through you. As soon as I heard yours, I had to go listen to hers....incredible!
I’m the same with PRS! Tried many but I just don’t get on with them. Undoubtedly amazingly built and finished. They just seem to be missing something. Each to their own though.
Wow, from now on I want to play like Dave Simpson not flowing!!! This playing was superb, thank you Dave, you're loved and appreciated! I can hear how those pickups are a bit thick for a strat sound, they really are more like an iron gauntlet hidden in a velvet glove, it sounded great but not spanky like a vintage strat.
Dave always nice to hear your brutal honesty but sprinkled with kindness. I got the DGT SE and it’s great in some ways but being a Strat/Tele guy it sits more then I expected but others rave about it. Thanks for giving us a listen.
The build quality of PRS is always just immaculate. They have such great quality control. I tried some PRS and to me the Silver Sky SE came closest to what I like. But lots of people love them and if you do like PRS you should give them a try, because they're brilliant for the money.
From a purely personal perspective, I quite liked the tone coming out of it 🙂 That neck pick up sounded lush! I know what you mean though - I've had a couple of guitars over the years that I desperately wanted to love, but just couldn't get on with. Not the guitars fault - just personal preference. A good balanced review as usual Dave lad 👍
Always wanted to try a PRS because of Daniel Johns of Silverchair, but never got round to it. Went to Las Vegas and saved enough to buy one but came back with a Gibson Les Paul Double Cutaway.
Mate thanks again for another inspiring jam, heavenly. It might be a great guitar but its all down to feel, ALL down to feel man. My guitar has been a Fender 2002 highway one strat for like 20 years now ( yeah i only have one 😅), i was mainly a bedroom player for most of those years, on snd off, a few failed attempts with local bands etc, and that guitar somehow stuck with me and always kept me from completely quitting music. Never really had access to many different guitars but lately i've finally formed a proper band, we're almost done recording our first album and rehearsing for our first gigs, and through that process i got my hands on quite a few different guitars from bandmates and studios etc. Gibson SG, Epiphone LPs, Ibanez RGs, Gretch semihollows, and a couple PRS SEs, custom 22 and a 245, and i connected with none of them. Since its finally time at my 37 to get a second guitar soon (yay) i'm really struggling to find sth that will make me feel as comfortable and insired as my beaten up long time partner in crime. Thanks again for all and sorry for the long dross, you've been one of the main reasons i finally got my ass going and got some shit done with what i had almost forgot how much I love. Cheers from Greece my friend.
You took twenty minutes up front explaining one thing, then went on to the next twenty five absorbed in and playing the hell out of it. I then went directly to Sweetwater and ordered one in stone blue. Thanks for the demo!
Dave I love you - a near 50min jam, EPIC! I love my sliver sky SE and was really surprised to hear your comment on the thick neck, as I stay well clear baseball bat necks and never considered 37:00 the SK SE to have one! Unfortunately one thing I did find disappointing was the nickel finish on the trem system. Maybe I have acid sweat but after owning one for less than a year the saddles and grub screws had started to rust and looked 5-10 years old. Doesn’t affect the playability and mine always brings a smile to my face when I pick it up. You hit the nail on the head - you have to have a connection and it’s just not there for you. Peace!✌️
for me there was only one great guitarist, John Frusciante, his music for my soul.. Who is capable of performing something like that? and here he is..ladies and gentlemen I present to you Dave Simpson
I really like the tone of this PRS - deep and resonant but with shine and brightness over the top. Not a trad strat tone but I like it! I had a PRS SE Tremonti and wish I had not sold it - very good and very well made for the price paid new.
Great honesst review Dave, its never one guitar fits all, its far more than just looks and sound. If it doesnt feel right or speaks to you its just not for you, regardless of make or indeed hype. One thing is for sure you bring the best out of any guitar you play! Great vid mate and awesome playing, thank you friggin great playing!
i would really love for you to get ahold of a sterling by music man cutlass. i've loved strats, got a cutlass and thought it was where fender needed to go with the strat (makes sense since leo was at music man after fender). i got a silver sky from my wife last year and while i love it, the neck is "bigger" then what i would usually want, but that cutlass neck is just that bit thinner at the nut and slimmer, couple that with a slight soft V, its perfect (for me)
Really interesting that you found the pickups to be too dull Dave! I didn't gel with both the USA and SE Silver Sky because they (the SE especially) had a high mid emphasis that was not to my personal tastes. But I too found the fit and finish to be 100%, really nice to hold and play.
Very beautiful playing sir loads of feel. Well done. I know exactly what you mean regards the lack of "want" with the PRS stuff. I've had a few core customs and they have all been sold on after a few weeks. Really dont know what it is............
Hi Dave , love the channel , I too have a Tokai white custom plus four other Tokais . I'm 100% with you on the PRS front . I can't find fault with them and when they first appeared in the shops all those years ago in the 80s, I couldn't wait to get one . Sadly when I did I just couldn't connect with it . I thought it may just be the one I had but no matter how many others I tried it just wasn't happening and I don't know why , I just couldn't bond with any of them. Maybe some time in the future I'll find one but it will take a real special instrument to better my five Tokais . Keep up the good work buddy
Quite clearly a VERY capable guitar from this demo. Makes all the right noises in both the quiet and loud zones. For some, this will be amazing as I've seen them new for only £589. But what inspires one person doesnt another...
Must admit, I’ve never liked the Silver Sky, but it sounded great, and even looked great in your hands. Made me wonder whether they’d be suited to being hotter strats; the headstock just seems to suit that distortion, black T-shirt, long hair and beard pretty well!
Have kinda had the same experience with PRS. Really Wanna love them but haven't felt inspired by most. That being said. If you get a chance, try out the DGT. I have been inspired by that model.
I had my xbox 360 on a few years ago, a while before the silver sky was released, and there was a link button on the home screen for “entertainment”. The picture on the button for this menu had a generic picture of a guitar which was a strat with a 3+3 headstock. So I guess this guitar symbolizes the most generic possible icon for all of entertainment for all humans according to Microsoft. Just always thought that was weird. Cheers Dave!
I always feel like PRS have this Perfect Unity thing going on, where you are always getting the best out of the guitar. Which is great if you are in a church band & want to hear every note you play, but not so great when you want to goose the guitar to get a little more out of it. You’re always there….
Agree. I had a PRS DGT USA model and it was so perfect in every way that it kind of felt sterile and lacking personality and soul. I ended up selling it and got a used Gibson SG 61 Reissue that I bonded with instantly. Different beast, not perfect, but had much more character and soul in its tone and feel.
Honesty wins. Every time. Here's a chalk to cheese comparison for you (being that the PRS is really a variation of the Stratocaster theme...): I gave the Gibson Les Paul a fair chance. Had one for four and a half years, and I really(!) tried to fall in love with it. And it was not(!) a bad guitar (once I'd replaced the horrid Kluson's with Grover Rotomatics; that was really the only fault with that guitar). But, I could never make it sound like me. Only the Strat could, so that's the one I've kept. That was a long time ago now; roughly 30 years; and every time I've picked up a Les Paul since, I've instantly been reminded of why I got rid of mine. I would hazard a guess, that that's sort of how you feel regarding this Paul Reep Smith... If it doesn't click, it doesn't click. Even if it is a terrific guitar in all measurable ways possible. Yeah, you compared double glouchester to Jarlsberg, whilst I was comparing the cliffs of Dover to Gauda... So... Anyway, back to your regular scheduled programme 😀
Wow, thanks for another awesome video, Dave. You played it like you loved it and it sounded great. For me I think they need to make a strat-like head stock and ditch the birds. It just strikes me as a temporary replacement neck, borrowed from another PRS and it always strikes me as a half 'n' half every time I see one.
Even though you don’t really like the guitar, you played so good jam, so I would say the guitar still inspired you in some way. Great playing, you created incredible ambiance with your playing combined with the sunshine from your window 😂
Greetings and good to see you again, amigo :) Have you tried G&L's Legacy or S-500? My friend, even the "Tribute" (far east) models are amazing. Really some of Leo's finest work :) Be well, Jeff
Dave, I love you, but as someone who owns 3 Strats, I have to say, I think the Silver Sky SE is better than all of them except my 1994 with Lace Sensor pickups which is my favorite. I got the SE used at Guitar Center for $700. A total steal. Been playing The Zephyr Song on it for days, Lol. Cheers! Sweet playing as usual BTW.
I’m fortunate to own a good amount of Strats (CS Clapton to squier) and I’ll be honest the SE does fit in with them, build quality is better than the new mexican guitar I recently got. Felt I needed to try an SE when they were reduced. I agree with you on the soul and connection a bit but I flit between guitars often and can’t complain at all with the sound.
I have tried a US Silver Sky, and I didn't like the neck and I understand what you say about the pickups, but it is that John mayer sound. I never liked PRS, until, I tried a DGT, which is the Dave Grissom signature model. And the sound and the pickups are amazing and the neck is great too, it's a bit smaller than most PRS!
Everything you said mirrors exactly my experience with the Silver Sky and with PRS guitars in general. I do not doubt that they are quality instruments, with great finish/tops etc., but I have never been able to connect with them. And The Silver Sky gives me the creep ... the combination of a traditional stat body with a PRS neck looks like a Frankenstain guitar ... and that is just like ... well ... my opinion man ...
I love the SE Silver Sky! I think the pickups have a chimey top end that fender's don't have. I really don't like the grey plastic tuners and truss cover. The se trem is better without having to put a tiny spring in the hole. And putting thread tape on a fender trem arm works! I personally would buy three of the se silver sky's over an expensive usa fender. The squires and the mexican strats are just as good for much less money than usa.
It looks good. It sounds good. It's built well... The main thing I hate is the John Mayer signature side of it. I really like the continuum album though.🤷♂️ Humans.🙂
Lovely as always. I find that my PRS is one of my most beautiful guitars. Visually Stunning. Perfect build..... but my Strat will always own my soul. I struggle to be emotive with the PRS. I struggle to be as Dynamic with my PRS. It sounds good to my ears but not to my soul. Its almost too perfect. I might drop it a few times and see if it gives it some of the pain my Strat feels...... haha A joke!
Hey Dave, really appreciate the fair review. I love PRS guitars. But I have to be honest, the silver sky just doesn’t do it for me either. And it’s really weird bc like you say the fit and finish is amazing and the playability is spot on. But I just don’t like it man! I really don’t like the voicing of the pickups mainly. No sparkle at all and leaves something to be desired. Not fenderesque if I could coin a word. I really hate the plastic greyed tuners and truss cover too. I think it makes the instrument look cheap. But that’s just me. I love the neck tho. So I beg to differ with you on that. But all and all I really could take or leave this particular guitar. Again, I’m a PRS fan. But this one didn’t do anything for me. Great vid as usual Dave!
I completely understand where you’re coming from. I got two ESP LTD EC 1000 models and didn’t get on with em. Excellent guitars and excellent quality just not for me. Big frets, flat neck and poly finish just not my bag. Because I don’t get on with em doesn’t take anything away from the instrument. Excellent guitars for certain.
Had a shot of my pals for a week. The plastic nobs on the tuners and the plastic truss road cover ruined the headstock for me, made it look cheap and spoiled the rest of the beauty of the guitar. Fit and finish was on point, fret work was lovely. Pups were very uninspiring. I've always felt the same with PRS, never connected with them. Always wanted to buy one as I think Paul Reed Smith is one of the coolest guys in guitar world. I nearly bought the PRS se Zach Myers 594 in blue as it looked beautiful, apart from the plastic tuner nobs. Felt amazing to play and was stunningly beautiful in person but sadly I just can't get into humbuckers 😢😢. Another thing with PRS for me is they are way to pricey. My mate bought one for about £1400-£1600 (think it was a McCarty) and it had the 85/15's that you get on the SE range. I'm sorry but if I'm paying £1400+ for a guitar, I'm expecting premium pups. Love your vids Dave. Good honest reviews then a full on concert of amazing guitar playing. Always watch your outro jam with the captain on Andertons. Always chuckle when the Captain tries to follow you then he's like "i can't follow that, you take it away again". Hope we are going to get to see a Pete and Dave jam soon 🤞🤞🙏🙏
I have a theory: I think most of the "I just can't get along with PRS" is more visceral and emotional. I get it. The backs of rock and roll were built on Fender and Gibson. There's nothing cooler than an authentic 1960's naturally relic'd Fender Strat. But close your eyes and play one of these Silver Sky's. Eyes closed so that light can shine.
Me too i have tried and the neck disturb me. I have found it a little bit too large for my fingers and specialy more and more we go down after the middle part to take highter notes. It sound nice but i really prefer a real strat it's more organic feeling. 👍😉
It would be boring if we all liked the same thing? I own a few guitars, and I've shown them on my channel. But the best guitar I own is one of my PRS custom 24, 25th anniversaries. They are both great, but one just has some magic about it. But I mainly play Fender's now, they just suit the type of music I'm playing with one of the bands I'm in. I'd love to try one of the Silver Sky's, and those new Tele type PRS guitars, and I really love Tele's.
It is odd but I feel just the same about PRS electric guitars. However, I tried and now own a PRS acoustic; I simply love it, fantastic woods, finish (given with all PRS (their QC teams deserve a medal)), with glorious subtle bright tone. I bet its sound will mellow with age, so I'm looking forward to playing it for many years. Try one if you get a chance ...
No vibe? What was that INCREDIBLE music you made with it?!? I was totally captured by your playing.
Incredible playing. Pure emotion. One of my favorite players on UA-cam or anywhere else.
chapters "drop down" and "just a little" absolutely beautiful playing. chapters "the silver skies" and "waltz away in the fire" sounded very pink floyd at times. I always enjoy your uploads!
Thank you, Dave!
Okay - For all of those gifted with golden ears - If this was an audio only clip, how many would swear it's Dave just jamming as usual on a Fender Strat?
Absolute fantastic playing! One of your best jam videos yet :) If I hadnt seen the intro I would have thought...wow Dave really likes this one😅
My lefty is on the UPS truck about 2 miles away....love this UPS app. Can't wait....
ironic, this is one of the best sounding videos I've seen with the SE Silver Sky :D
I totally see that, I tried quite some PRS and the Silver Sky SE to me was far ahead of even much more expensive models.
I forgot to say how much I love and respect you Dave! Absolutely love this video! My first love is an acoustic, then a strat! Love, music, and you are ETERNAL!!! Peace and Love! Flanger not anger!
I'm with you Dave. PRS never tripped my trigger either.
Very valid reasons for not bonding with the instrument, but I will say this. I put this video on while my wife was in a doctor’s appointment and I was trying to calm a 6 month old down in the parking lot. Your playing did the trick and I really enjoyed it myself! Cheers brother.
O,Dave the struggle between fender and the prs silver sky. With the Oswald, and mr.white what will you ever ,do.o,ooo"#make it a thing.😂,😊,❤
One of your finest moments and on a PRS ,who would have thought it,the music doesnt care how you feel, love your uploads.
GOD DAMN IT DAVE YOUR MUSIC IS HAUNTING. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR GIFT TO US MERE MORTALS
Wonderfull playing!
Dave, you've totally described exactly how I feel about PRS guitars after having played quite a few and having owned 2 for a few months, each.
Great quality guitars that just don't speak to me.
If it didn't siut you I could not tell, it sounds sweet 🤗🎸🎸
thank you Dave, especially for the The Silver Skies part
You hit the nail on the head with the vibe. They don't have one for me and not just the silver skys.
"Just A Little" was so gorgeous 🥺
Love you, Dave! Hope you are well.
Excellent review Dave. I hate to say it, but you sounded exquisite on it. It could be the very guitar for you!😮
I'm more of a LP guy and I've never cared for any PRS models really. But when the McCarty .594 singlecut came out in the SE line, I bought a standard in vintage cherry. Never tried a Silver Sky but I have got a 245. Love it to bits. Easiest guitar I've ever had to physically play. Made for bending strings and howling.
You might not like it but this was one of the best jams i have seen
I don't have any problems with PRS and I own 2 of them. I like Humbuckers and the PRS ones are pretty good. They aren't my favourites but I wouldn't be without them. Horses for courses as they say. Keep shining Dave.

I play that song on your band camp all the time I love it

I agree. :)

Amazing playing !
Totally with you.
I had a soapbar SE, it was nice, but I didn't keep it long.

Onya Dave ya done it again. Amazing! and BTW please get rich and famous as soon as possible so you can tour Australia.
I need to know … what pedal created that synth sound during “the silver skys” 33 mins in!? Phenomenal @dave!!!!
i'd imagine it's the mel9.

A guitar has to inspire as you play it regardless of the quality of the build. It's just one of those things when it fails to do so.
connected or not, best soothing sounds i heard in long time, Sorry i do not listen to your too long playing videos longer, i`m her for content

Wow wow wow ❤ very soul insane galactic univers juste perfect feeling Your heart ❤
I actually really enjoyed your jam Dave even if you weren’t feeling it. Got a real Buckethead Pike series vibe from it
Sounded incredible Dave 🙏🏼

Which is great if you are in a church band & want to hear every note you play, but not so great when you want to goose the guitar to get a little more out of it. You’re always there….
Agree. I had a PRS DGT USA model and it was so perfect in every way that it kind of felt sterile and lacking personality and soul. I ended up selling it and got a used Gibson SG 61 Reissue that I bonded with instantly. Different beast, not perfect, but had much more character and soul in its tone and feel.
Awesomeness
Best I’ve heard ya ! ❤
Honesty wins. Every time.
Here's a chalk to cheese comparison for you (being that the PRS is really a variation of the Stratocaster theme...):
I gave the Gibson Les Paul a fair chance.
Really some of Leo's finest work :)
Be well,
Jeff
Beautiful guitar doing what it is intended to do...
Great demo man 👍
I want one ….
Real Magik happening in the jam ❤
I think the raunch and roll has been engineered out of them,
Dave, I love you, but as someone who owns 3 Strats, I have to say, I think the Silver Sky SE is better than all of them except my 1994 with Lace Sensor pickups which is my favorite. I got the SE used at Guitar Center for $700. A total steal. Been playing The Zephyr Song on it for days, Lol. Cheers! Sweet playing as usual BTW.
I know exactly what you're talking about, Dave. I've got a PRS HH Les Paul-style guitar I haven't even played for at least two years. Just no bonding.
If this is what not right sounds like, I don’t ever wanna be right.
I don't know if you own one now Dave but I must say it sounds absolutely fantastic, fact. And it does suit you for sure
Looking like a Strat copy- still you made it sound awesome Dave
I have tried a US Silver Sky, and I didn't like the neck and I understand what you say about the pickups, but it is that John mayer sound. I never liked PRS, until, I tried a DGT, which is the Dave Grissom signature model. And the sound and the pickups are amazing and the neck is great too, it's a bit smaller than most PRS!
I feel like Prs guitars are like marmite you either love or hate them
PRS Silversky SE to Dave 👎 to anyone watching and hearing Dave’s PRS Silversky SE inspired jam 👍🎸 Hello, Reverb!
I have a PRS hollow body but I spend most of my time playing my Gear4Music s-type 😂 You rule Dave
The headstock will NEVER be cool as a Fender!
Damn right!!!!!
O que importa é o timbre, foda-se o headstock.
It looks good. It sounds good. It's built well... The main thing I hate is the John Mayer signature side of it. I really like the continuum album though.🤷♂️ Humans.🙂
I can't live with that headstock
on a Strat body. 😳
No it won’t. I don’t like it at all 😬.
Espectacular!!!!
Wow!
Tried that. Its not the ghosts of fender or gibson. Its prs necks and there overall vibe. Not for me. Yet.
