  • Repair of a vintage Kenwood KR-4200 from around 1976. Both channels were cutting out, problems with tone quality, and bad solder joints. A great sounding stereo brought back to life!
    A very useful article: audiokarma.org/forums/index.p...

Don’t know how it took me so long to find your channel? Great work.

I just found one of these in my Dads basement. Seem to work OK so far. The radio sounds great, especially the AM which has way better frequency response than typical muffled sounding AM sections. The phono stage is a bit noisy though. I like the ability to hook up two tape decks and it even has a DIN input for one of the tape loops.

Too funny!! I did the same damn thing with the speaker outs on a KR3130 that is currently on my bench.... they are on top of each other rather than next to each other!! Glad I'm not the only one.

Very nice repair, thanks for sharing. Have you ever thought of building an amp from scratch? You have a great shop.

Awesome video. I’m glad I watched this before ignorantly replacing the speaker relay switch. I have a Kenwood KR-6200. When I push the power button, it usually makes a click-ping sound before music comes out of the speakers. Sometimes the click-ping never happens and no music comes out. Sometimes after listening to music for a while, the click-ping will happen and music will turn off. From your video, it sounds like the speaker relay switch turning off might not be the problem, but rather a symptom of something else. Do you know any colleagues in the SF Bay Area who can do excellent work like you? I got the receiver from my father and I really want to get it working again, but it’s so hard to find qualified service persons. After watching your video, I luckily see that I am definitely not qualified! 😅

Well I'm a year late, but the volume knob should have come off easily - somebody glued it in the past. The end of the volume shaft you can see the original crimp; that's how the shaft was retained at the wafer side. I don't see how you could have done things much differently though.

Hello Mr. Rob, congratulations on the great video, very informative. Perhaps, based on your experience, you could assist me. I also have a KR-4200, and on my equipment, the RIGHT output seems to disappear after a while. Let me explain: I connect my audio source to one of the auxiliary inputs (AUX1 or AUX2), and after a time, the audio from the output simply vanishes, regardless of whether I'm using channel A or B. The same thing happens with the PHONES output. To make it work again, I give it a kind of "jolt," by turning the selector to FM and then back. So far, I have only cleaned the potentiometers, I haven't followed the signal. However, based on the symptoms, I believe my problem must be in the tone module or the preamplifier. I would like to know your opinion. Thank you!

Very cool video. Nice looking receiver also. I just bought a Kenwood KR-7070 and I want to replace some burned out bulbs but I can’t get the front face plate cover off. I have removed all the knobs, all the little switch knobs, the tuning knob, and the four nuts and washers from the controls. But for some reason there seems to be something along the bottom of the cover that is holding it from coming off. I have the bottom cover off and I don’t see anything that is holding that front cover from coming off. Can you steer me in the right direction with this? Thanks for your time. I wish you lived near Los Angeles I would love to have you take a look at my 7070. Every once in a while the right channel sounds a little distorted, and after a couple minutes it sounds clear again. Something sounds like it’s on the way out but unfortunately my skill set is very limited.
