    That unit is more cramped inside than the KR-6600 I finished restoring a few weeks back although they appear to be the same size. Was easier for me, you're a dedicated guy!

    I have just acquired one with the speaker protector relays buzzing. Unfortunately I am no technician so I can just watch these videos and dream about this one getting fixed. After watching this redo, if I did get someone to do it, it would cost crazy money to have it fixed. Very thorough job Patrick.

      Thanks. Rebuilding the whole stereo could cost a lot, You could find a tech that will fix only your relay problem or at least look at it for you. This is a great stereo and it filled my whole with music and I never got the volume knob anywhere near half way.

    The 9600....
    Trio Darlington high current packs
    Dual high quality power supplies
    I had a 6500 that was amazing in the 90's
    I can only imagine owning this reciever what a gem

    Way to plow through, good job. I notice most of the guys that go through one of these don't care to do another one. It is a lot of work.

    just saw this very nice i still have a 6600 and an original Model 11 bought the 11 in okinawa in 1974, 43 years ago, and the 6600 was my younger brothers; he bought it used in 1986. sadly and too young my bro passed way and i got his amp. both great sounding to this day with no work on either yet! mine are pushing jbls L36s, klipsch kg-4s, some cerwins for aux and a pair i designed and had built (by lovelace/creative acoustics raleigh,nc).

      Glad that you like the video. Kenwoods were well designed and built stereos. I hope you get more years out of yours. The 9600 was a monster and who really needs all the power unless one has a very large room. The 6600 and the model 11 have plenty of power and not all of the heat that the 9600 produced.
      Sorry to hear about your brother, I lost mine too and also to young.

    Great video Patrick!! i have a Kenwood KR-4600 great for me! sometimes lost right channel, i open again the case and i see a capacitor near transistor like burned with heat.. and other little capacitor too burned , still working, but i dont know much electronics, what cause this overheating transistor? is one little onboard no heatsink.. Is it a symptom of early death? I estimate to be 1977 may some capacitor be wrong and cause this? I do not dare to calibrate the bias current sounds easy but my fear to damage it, I tend to take care of all my equipment never punish them, I use them very well but I think it is time for a recap. Excuse my English.
    Your video is beautiful! Worth watching to learn.

    good job on the resto. glad to see another 9600 got the treatment it deserves. if you havent already, check out mine in my channel list. mine has the same kind of upgrades as yours, except I added in a power sw relay to take the main load off the toggle sw and I went full led, but you have to add in a cap to the relay board in the empty cap space thats on there to bleed off the lights. great job!

    Hi Patrick! Was wondering if you could help me. I have a Technics SA-200. In Aux, switched off it plays until caps are fully discharge. I changed all the lamps. Filter caps, Both power amps were blown and over heating. Replaced both and it sounds good except a slight buzz in speakers in FM and the playing after awitched off problem. Thanks in advance

    • @patrickoconnell3896
      @patrickoconnell3896  6 років тому

      Thanks for watching my video. Many stereos with no speaker relay in them will play until the caps drain. It's funny that it only does it in aux. The guys at Audiokarma are great and might have an answer for you. And with the tuner buzzing. I do this more as a hobby and get most of my information at Audiokarma.

    Why would you use such powerful 25 watt wire-wound resistors - is that what you had available? It seems like overkill to me. What would happen if I were to use 15 watt resistors? By the way, do the 25 watt resistors keep cool? I have the same problem with my powerboard.

    • @patrickoconnell3896
      @patrickoconnell3896  5 років тому

      When researching this stereo all of the posts on AudioKarma said this is what they done. That power board is known to get very hot. Maybe a 15 watt resistor would work but when the best guys on the forum said to use a 25 watt I did. And yes mounting it on the steel wall did let it run a whole lot cooler. I have a degree in electronics but the guys on AudioKarma knows stereos and I listen to them most of the time.
      Thanks for watching my video.

    • @j267699
      @j267699 5 років тому

      Then 25 watt resistors is what I shall use! Thank you sir for steering me right. Your video was very informative. As an aside, I hear that the big power amplifier (TA-200W) is a very rare, expensive component to find. I saw on audiokarma that someone had came up with an ingenious schematic, but it was lacking in some detail. Maybe someday you can come up with a solution to this problem. Many amateur electronic hobbyists are looking for salvation.

    • @patrickoconnell3896
      @patrickoconnell3896  5 років тому

      @@j267699 Yes the IC outputs are rare. That's why I didn't push mine pass 100 watts when testing it. I never got the volume near half way and it was rattling all of the windows in the house.
      I have seen plans for Pioneers IC output but never tried to make one. And I don't trust any of the ones you see on ebay, a lot of fake ones are out there.
      I won't power on a stereo without first researching it on audiokarma. A lot of great guys there that will take you step by step if needed.
      I take lots of pictures of everything from many angles just to make sure I get things back together right. I hope yours comes out great.

    Bummer. I was hoping that you'd show us the actual recapping and soldering new resistors process, including removing the necessary boards which are blocked by everything else in the unit, as well as how to discharge the existing caps. No one seems to want to actually how to recap these old receivers. It's only, "Ok, here's the final product of my work, which I won't show exactly how I did it."

    • @patrickoconnell3896
      @patrickoconnell3896  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for your input. When I first started working on these I too turn to youtube looking for answers. Someone would say "I hook up a signal generator " but never said or show how. I worried about hooking up my scope without blowing it up and harming myself. I did start off with cheap units to play with and some did go up in smoke. I watch channels like Mr Carlson lab, xraytonyb, old school and others that showed a little more of what is going on. And I go to audiokarma for advice. I have been thinking of getting deeper into things in coming videos.

      These are already a huge project, now factor in constantly having to set up perfect camera angles on a tripod, zooming, working with tripod in the way etc it easily adds 5+ hours to the project. Once you struggle through that, you now have 5-10+ hours of raw video that you have to watch and edit down to something watchable.
      Then once you're done and post it online, the only payment you get is an infinite amount of dudes commenting "I have [insert completely different model and brand name here] and it is having X issue, solve now thx"

      I make these videos for fun and to show that these stereos can be work on with basic test equipment. I have a good knowledge of electronics but I am not a master. Sites like Audiokarma has the people that will help one do this. If one doesn't know how to solder or hook up test equipment they best not mess with them.
      This was the first high wattage stereo that I work. I spent a lot of time researching it and about three weeks working on it. I would of had hours and hours of video that no one would watch. I just make videos of the highlights.

    Hello Patrick! I have a KR 9600 receiver i got used for $100. One channel works the other does not. Suggestions on where to start? I can do simple repairs. I took an Industrial Electronics course a million years ago...lol

    • @patrickoconnell3896
      @patrickoconnell3896  6 років тому

      I would start at audiokarma.net. This stereo is well covered there. I believe that you will find a parts list there. I have got many of stereos to work just using some DeoxIT on the controls, easy fix if you are lucky. Dirty switches can stop a channel from working. If the IC output is bad, good luck finding one. $$$
      Do you have any test equipment?

    • @thomasa62

      I am trying to get ready for the bad news that the Darlington 200W power amp is bad! lol. Good news is I found one for $120 if that is the case. Research has told me that often it is the components connected to the Darlington chip that is bad...

      Hi Patrick. I decided to take your advice. Cut the wires to the power amps and see if the fuses blow. Unit definitely needs recap/remod but I really want to know where I stand with the Darlington amps before I decide on my next move. Either way it is my hobby project and I will need help! Thx 4 checking in!

    Is there a way to test the Darlington ta200W amps for damage?

    • @patrickoconnell3896
      @patrickoconnell3896  6 років тому +1

      On the one that I did, I cut the wires to the two main amp boards You could try that to see if the fuse blows again. If it does, it could be the amp board. I really don't know if there is a way to test the darlington. And beware of the big filter caps, put a volt meter them to make sure they discharge or you could shock yourself. Do go to Audiokarma and to the Kenwood section. The guys there are great and will help you out more then I can. They are the real pros. It was with the help there that I was able to rebuild this stereo. And it is free to join.
