A slight departure from the thoughtful, rock song. We have a dancing track for the crowd to enjoy and the typical Band Maid magic. I may not jump as high as I used to but am happy to punch the air. Everybody Jump.
On 25 September, BAND-MAID became independent from its previous office and launched ‘MAIDIT Co.LTD’. A new album, Epic Narratives, was also released on the same day. In case you are wondering, ‘Magie’ is the first track on the album.
I totally enjoy Akane-san’s clever use of the double-kick pedal. Not just this track but the entire discography. The blast beats are used in certain portions which totally highlights that part. 🍌❤
BM is definitely one of the rocking bands. They shouldn’t be compared to Lovebites as the bands have different genres and different characteristics. But BM gives it their all in concert! Hard to say how popular they would be in the US, but I believe all their concerts here have sold out. Nice reaction and analysis as usual Bob!!
Thanks Guy! Even though they are super different, I think people will compare since they are both Japanese bands. Just one of those things I think. I agree with you that they are both great but produce totally different sounds.
@@bobcieslinskiI personally believe Lovebites should be bigger even though I'm not a fan. They are just as talented as Band-Maid in a different way and they sing in English if I remember correctly. Akane and Haruna are friends and two bands respect and support each other too.
Ain't no band who writes, plays and performs like Band-Maid! While I've watched Magie climb from an initial 6, when I first heard it, to a 7 and now an 8 (taken from a recent survey of my cerebral musical cortex ;-), I always appreciate the execution, sound and, once again, performance of all their songs... even starting with "Made In Japan," released in 2014 when I first became entranced with the Magical Maids. Thx, Bob!
Bob can you react to "Brightest Star". Miku is the lead vocalist on the song. It was great, but Kanami's twangy guitar riff near the end of the song was something I never heard her do before. The surprising sound reminded me of a cross between rockabilly and Italian mandolines.
Bob, I have a suggestion. If you put "Magie" on your Spotify list or playlist, don't be standing. If you do, your body will start moving around and dancing like a teenage fool like I did. I'm 75 and when I did that my poor body started hurting. My knees, my back, and my too old butt started hurting. I had to go take a hot both, take some pain meds, and go lay down for a while. Thank God, I recuperated but beware playing "Magie" could be hazardous to your health.
Thanks Bob--always illuminating comments! This one took a couple listens to grow on me but its rock 'n roll goodness really shines through. And yep, I do wish there were more American rock bands (been listening to Clutch lately) but these days it's a niche market. Cheers.
Great reaction and analysis. Again, Kanami likes to push Saiki's vocals (as well as the other members) as this was pretty close to the top of her belting range. Thanks again for continuing to react to Band-Maid.
Unfortunately, you are probably correct with your comment about their global presence and notoriety. Even though they are Japanese, I have always thought that if they at least sung in fluent English they would be able to grab a lot more fans outside Japan - more than they already have. That being said - I don't want them to change anything at this point.
The other BM (Babymetal) is proving that singing in Japanese is not the biggest obstacle to be popular worldwide. I admit that both band's performances are very different, that might give an advantage to the babies over the maids. Babymetal is performance-focussed while Band-Maid is music-focussed.
@@wac4259 I would argue that the style of Baby Metal is exactly what modern pop music is consuming. It has little to do with the music/lyrics, and mostly about the flashy "Las Vegas" performance, costumes, lighting, sets, and choreography.
Great vocal harmonies in this one with Saiki and Pigeon.🕊️ Yes, the Instrumemental Power Trio is phenomenal, but we all need to praise the vocalists more. This is live... Saiki is stretching her top end, Miku is responsible for some difficult harmony lines, both higher and lower, and nothing at all flat or sharp or out of time with those guitars and drums thundering around them. And even more impressive when you consider both Saiki and Miku had throat surgery less than a decade ago.
Here's what Kanami, who composed the music, and Saiki, who wrote the lyrics, had to say about this song: "I was conscious of “Hard riffs and hard guitar solos are essential for BAND-MAID!” … But the chorus was created with the image of everyone jumping up and down and dancing ♡. The riff makes full use of slides, which is surprisingly difficult. I'd be happy if it becomes a standard song that people get excited about when they are at okyuji. But, who already have heard it at okyuji, how do you think? Comment by Saiki: "The song is growing into a song that we can get excited about together at okyuji. I did wrote the lyrics with the okyuji in mind. “Magie" is a German word meaning "Magic”, and why did I choose magic? At okyuji, I feel like "The moment when body and mind naturally move, it's as if I'm under a magic spell.” It's the opening track on their superb new album, Epic Narratives.
@throwaway9389 Yes I do but I stopped putting it in comments as YT kept removing the comments because it referenced another social media site. The article goes through Epic Narratives song by song, with comments from any band members involved. The site was after W but before Y. There was a second site too, where I also, ahem, read it.
During this/your reaction MV, I think I came to the realization that this latest Band Maid album.... Epic Narratives.... is Band Maid playing/doing what they themselves want to do. No points to prove, just them being themselves. Their last album... Unseen World.... was IMO a musical theory masterpiece, where as this album, "Epic Narratives" does take a step or two back. It seems like the ladies have said... " we don't need to prove our talent anymore, lets just play what we want/feel" ..... This latest album just feels, for me, a more natural/organic album. Band Maids real 1st album...... if that makes sence....lol
I would place it in a sentimental/melodic/soulful space of their music, in juxtaposition with Unseen World, which was on a more technical/compositional/progressive side.
I did not like this song when I first heard it. I don't even remember going out of my way to listen to it after the first listen. And then the next time I heard it I thought it was a great song and a great performance. I have never experienced this with any other band. I did not like Bestie originally. I absolutely did not like Hate? when I heard it originally. I've come to realize that it's not BandMaid it's me. If I hear a BandMaid song and I do not like it. That just means that I'm not in the right frame of mind or mood. So when they come out with a new song and I don't care for it I realize it's only a matter of time before it's one of my favorites! Thank you for your excellent reaction!
It may not be pronounced Magie. The lines Enchanted By Magic, and Captivated By Magic are clues. So it may be pronounced Maji, but they just used the Western spelling.

cluppo featuring Band-Maid. Great suggestion!
Hey Bill I really appreciate the donation. I will try to get to that one for you. Take care man.
You're right, Bob. Too many folks are missing out because of the language differences. The band should be even more popular than they are - by far!!
