- Heroes have all the good karma but villains have all the fun, which is presumably why so many game heroes switch sides for the sequel. This is more widespread than we even imagined, judging by the quantity of comments on our last video on the issue. Direct your attention to these seven heroes who lived long enough to become the villain and subscribe to Outside Xbox for a video like this every Thursday.
Take Prince Arthas Menethil circa Warcraft 3, whose goal as a paladin was to stop a plague of undeath from infesting the kingdom - something at which he failed pretty spectacularly by using the cursed sword Frostmourne.
Said sword turned Prince Arthas into a Death Knight of the Scourge, and lead to him destroying Lordaeron, as well as much of the surrounding area.
Arthas then merged with the Lich King, killed his Dad King, and began a reign of terror that ended only when your heroic player character from World of Warcraft voyaged to his base in Northrend to defeat him.
There's a lesson in there about not wielding cursed runeblades nicked from Lich Kings, we reckon.

I mean it's basically confirmed at this point.
1. Jane certainly has quite good control of Frostmourne. I guess it submitted to Jane's much more powerful mind and evil powers huh?
2. Big Boss did not die by aerosol and a lighter. As he came back in MGS4 and died there at the grave of his mentor the Boss. Though Venom Snake did indeed die during Metal Gear 1.
Not to mention big boss wasnt a villain at all, his clone was. And venom snake I have doubts about the validity of the child soldiers and nukes thing considering phantom pain but perhaps that explanation will forever go untold now kojima is gone.

Try Knight Artorias, from Dark Souls. He was a dragon-slaying hero and a knight to Great Lord Gwyn. However, he got completely wrecked by Manus, and became consumed by The Abyss. He's the first boss of the DLC.

Gael would fit pretty well, I think. His quest starts out nobly enough, but then he becomes consumed by it to the point of madness.
So it seems Jane's evil intentions overpowered the Frostmorne curse and brought the blade to heal. Is this the beginning of her glorious reign of terror and destruction.
Red didn't become a villain. Yes you have to fight him to beat the game. However I don't see him plotting anything nefarious. Just waiting for someone who can defeat him.

I fully agree with you. Red never even antagonizes the player at all, throughout the entire game of gold/silver/crystal, and is only hinted at by Professor Oak after the 16th badge is earned. Sure, he catches all 151 Pokémon in Red/Blue, but gold/silver/crystal show that there are even more Pokémon, which could be reason enough to train and prepare for any sort of challenges that come your way... like say, being invited to a beautiful tropical island to battle the fiercest trainers from all around the world.
it's YOU who challenges Red, not the other way around. This is also why I feel the Gym leaders aren't antagonists either (except for Giovanni), merely obstacles for the player to overcome.
I think they mean like you have to fight them and the main protagonists to be a good guy.
Also, who knows what he did to the trainers before you?
In the Pokemon Special comic he's there to heal an injury he sustained in a previous arc. Not canon obviously, but it's more of an explanation than the no explanation you get in the game itself.

RED IS NOT A VILLAIN
If he wanted to stand around waiting to hand folks their rear ends he could've done that as Champion far more easily. Instead he retires from the League, having fulfilled his personal goals, and chills out on a mountain enjoying the scenery.
And then some young punk charges up the mountain demanding a fight just to validate *his own* ego. *You* have to initiate the battle; Red doesn't even approach if you stand in front of him, even though you're blocking his view and being rude.

Red does NOT become a villain. If he does, then Pokemon is a crapsack world where everyone, from old men to little girls cosplaying as Pikachu, is a villain.

OMG, the heroes of Diablo 1 is not unnamed you guys. The warrior is Prince Aidan who became the Wanderer, the Wizard became the summoner and the Rogue became Blood Raven.

Red is not a villain, he is a champion. Obviously an antagonist to anyone who seeks the same title, but not a villain.

What I love is how the commenter suggests Red does nothing but sits on a mountain… Kanto is literally free of Team Rocket influence, and Johto’s problems got solved as soon as they came forward.
In fact, aside from Red/Blue, the region’s champion helps deal with the villainous team… usually defeated by a 10 (or 11) yr old.

Chaos Shadow Well...he became a villain and ended as a villain. Only reason he’s good now is because Mortal Kombat (2011) happened and that was a reboot of the first three games.

When I first fought Red, my Pokemon were underleveled but I had a bunch of potions and full restores so I just kept healing my Pokemon when I didn't have any PP left and waited for Red's Pokemon to struggle themselves to death. I wasn't proud, but it got the job done.
Let's face it, Jane's not fazed by FrostMourne; she's way too strong for it.

Yes, he was just another greedy bad guy all along who died before the game even begins. And to be fair, even if your playable character was actually alex he would be far from a hero. Prototype had this could Evil vs Evil theme
There is no Prototype 2 ... It never existed. Just like there is no live action Dragon Ball Z movie or live action Avatar the last Air Bender movie. They were all just bad dreams.

fun fan theory for anyone who's curious: A lot of fans think that Cortana is actually infected by the flood (logic plague is what it's called when an AI gets infected by the flood). Long story short, a lot of her beliefs are actually the same as the flood, and fans think she took up the Mantle because that way she could fulfill Gravemind's plans... not that anyone asked, but it is a great theory and I hold out hope that's what's going to be happen.

What about Corvo or Emily in Dishonored 2? They definitely become villains if you get the high chaos ending where you forget to unfreeze your other family member and rule Dunwall with an iron fist.
They arent the villain of the game though. Also corvo could have been the villain in the first one. Everyone knows the canon endings are the good endings

I'm still shocked you didn't include Reaper from overwatch, he turned on everyone without warning!
It doesn't fit with this episode since Overwatch is the first game in the series so he was never the good guy in the series itself just in the lore.
Also Overwatch *currently* isn't "story-focused" or has one that can be played, so it doesn't count even more... yet. (They should do it, those shorts are pretty great)
What about Starkiller in the Force Unleashed 2? Even though it's technically a clone, if you choose to kill Darth Vader at the end of the game he shows up out of nowhere and murders everyone!
I think frostborn didn't have any effect on Jane because she overpowered it's evil with her own.

I wanted thank you all so much for introducing me to the Prototype series. When it first came out, I didn’t understand why it was calling out to me as it did and since I was still coming into my own ESP wise, I ignored the call. I have an affinity for all demons, devils and monsters so when I saw your videos talking about it, it resonated through me and I finally understood that previous call and now I never ignore it when something is calling out to me. Now I wait for their third installment of the game I’m sure it’s going to be kick f*cking ass. WOO HOO!!!

... You forgot to mention that we don't kill Arthas the Lich King in WoW. He kills us, then Tyrion arrives and finished Arthas, wins, and then resurrects us, the players.

Now, Ryu isn't a *hero* so to speak, but defeating an overpowered Megalomaniac super-villain Psycho (power) M.Bison is what a hero does, innit?
Until, he becomes *Evil Ryu* who isn't a world dominating type, however his power is called *"Satsui no Hado"* or "Surge of Murderous intent" and considering the other master of it is called *Akuma* "Demon", he isn't much of a dictator either but he kills his opponents, whilst they suffer 1000 deaths, and have their soul wiped out.

Gonna say Naked Snake doesn't necessarily belong here. His end game was to deal with the Patriots which formed right under his nose. He fits more under the Anti-hero than villain role despite being the main antagonist of 2 games in which there's an argument that Solid Snake is in fact the villain. That's how the Metal Gear series worked, the lines were blurred.
Also Pokémon trainer Red is refrenced in ALL of the games
The best thing about arthas/the Lich king is after you beat him through what at the time was a very long hard fight, just to prove he could he one shots the entire raid before delivering a monologue.

Shay Cormac, Assassin's Creed Rogue. He starts off seeking to save innocent lives from the ignorant floundering of his Assassin brothers and sisters but in the epilogue it is revealed that he kickstarts the French Revolution as revenge for Connor killing his fellow Templars of the Colonial Rite, fully buying into the Templars' 'end justifies the means' philosophy.

Frostmourne ate it's soul.
As far as Diablo's Warrior hero Prince Aiden is concerned, you can't really blame him. Diablo's soulstone was broken already, so it wouldn't have been able to hold the Lord of Terror on its own anyway. Here are just ten things that Aiden happen to him before and during his "adventure":
1. His king father went murderously insane (after Diablo attempted to possess him, but wasn't strong enough yet so just destroyed the king's mind instead) and executed his wife (Aiden's mother), and sent Aiden and the rest of his army off to die in a pointless war (many of Aiden's closest friends died).
2. His younger brother and sole sibling went missing, and when the archbishop led a "rescue mission" in to the labyrinth, he got much of the non military populace (even more of Aiden's friends) slaughtered by betraying them to the forces of Hell.
3. His maddened father was mercy killed by one of the few remaining knights of the kingdom, who the dying king then cursed with an unholy possession curse that would slowly kill the knights and then bring them back as demonic knights of Hell.
4. Aiden returns from a war that killed most of the people he loved, finds out his mother has been executed by his father, that his father went mad and was mercy killed, and that his younger brother (and sole sibling) is missing and thought to be trapped in the now Hell tainted labyrinth under the desecrated church.
5. Aiden faces down undead monsters, unholy twisted animals, and demons of Hell under the now cursed church.

7. Aiden encountered his now cursed and undead father, and had to kill the Skeleton King his dad had become.
8. Aiden saw, and had to face all sorts of horrors and madness conjured from his worst fears.
9. After going through the cursed church, a tainted labyrinth, volcanicly hot caverns, and finally Hell itself, along with fighting the aforementioned creatures made from his worst fears brought to life, he encountered and had to fight the literal demonic source of all fear, terror, and horror.
10. Finally, after triumphing despite countless sanity shattering challenges, he finds his lost little brother... DEAD... BECAUSE DIABLO HAD DRIVEN THE YOUNG BOY INSANE WITH TERROR AND THEN POSSESSED HIS BODY... WHICH AIDEN HAS JUST KILLED.
So when all is said and done, can you blame the guy for thinking that maybe, just maybe, since he'd fought through so much already, that he would have the willpower to keep Diablo imprisoned in his own mind, and did so despite knowing how horrific of a fate it is to be a living prison for the essence of one of the most terrible entities in existence? The Warrior... Prince Aiden... had lost EVERYTHING. And despite that, he still selflessly attempted to contain the Lord of Terror in his own body, mind, and soul. Also, can you blame the guy for doing something so hopeless, even crazy, after all he had been through? And he wasn't the only one either. The other two heroes of Tristram, the Rogue and the Sorcerer who accompanied him against and literally into Hell itself, also were cursed, broken, and ultimately DAMNED...despite all they had struggled and triumphed against.
So yeah, he did "become the villian", but it wasn't as simple as "going bad" like some of the others on this list. Aiden sacrificed literally EVERYTHING to try and save his tormented and terrorized people, and now his broken soul is trapped and suffering FOREVER in Hell for it.
Guys what about Maze from the fable series... He literly saves your life when your a young boy and turns you into a hero only to try and take your life in the end! We forgive you Maze.

Cortana? Not a hero. She is the Chiefs computer. Which is currently broken. More of an IT issue.
From the events of Halo 2 on, there is evidence that Cortana isn't rampant due to age, but that her rampancy was induced by the Gravemind. At the end of Halo 2, she is left behind on High Charity while John goes to stop Truth. What they were probably unaware of at the time was that the Gravemind was also onboard, as evidenced by the giant Flood tentacles and the all too familiar voice. Something not really covered much in the games is that the Flood can use what is known as the logic plague to convert inorganic foes. They did this during the Forerunner-Flood war to the Forerunner AI in charge of most Forerunner defenses, Mendicant Bias. That and the sudden turn of Cortana tells me something happened during the time she was stuck on High Charity alone with the Gravemind. It tells me this rampancy is not time related, but logic plague induced. This may mean she isn't really bad as well, but may be under the influence of the Gravemind.

How about Celembrimbor in Shadow of War? He betrays Talion to fight Sauron. Or maybe Talion, because he becomes a Nazgul? Or maybe they dont count because they were both dead since the beginning? Or maybe they dont count because the game is not canon? ARGHHH! So confusing!
None of them became villains though, Talion became a Nazgul in order to continue fighting against Sauron and protecting the Realms of Men and Celebrimbor left Talion in order to defeat Sauron.
But the Nazgul were the ones responsible for hunting down Frodo and they participated in the war. And I considered Celebrimbor to be a villian since he betrayed Talion, the hero.

also, betraying Talion doesnt necessarily make Celebrimbor the villain since he betrayed him with good intentions whilst Talion refused to help. If gandalf told frodo to kill himself, but frodo didnt kill himself and stop sauron anyway does that mean Frodo is the villain?
Ethan Ruigrok I agree with you on Talion, but Celebrimbor definitely did not betrayed him with good intentions. Celebrimbor intention was to defeat Sauron by dominating him, so he could replace Sauron and rule Middle-Earth for himself. Talion refused to, in his own words, "trade one Dark Lord for another", so Celebrimbor left him to die.

Red is dead. He vanishes because he is the spirit who doesnt want to let go. (atleast in the gold & silver timeline, but he is alive in sun & moon) Red could also just be vanishing due to flying from the mountain to visit his mother and blue
