With digital photography, we tend to shoot far more images than we need to. This isn't always a bad thing, but it is important to realise that just because we can, doesn't mean we should. I say this because in this video I spend more than 24hrs in the forests of Finland looking for images and only took one photograph with my Canon 5DIV. I just made sure it was the right image.

Asad Khan that's how I shoot also. I don't like when other photographers over edit their photos to the point where Photoshop is obvious or makes it look like a painting.

I can't take my eyes off this picture. Black, brown & white color palette is stunning and the diagonals created by the fallen trees are spectacular. Thanks for opening my eyes again! My new favorite picture... until next time.

As a beginner to photography I so appreciate you sharing your thinking as you work out a shot and the sharing of your settings as you take the shot. You are helping me to see things in new ways. I look forward to each video you post. Thanks!

Love it. Its one of those photography tricks - you go out to get a certain shot, see nothing and then you find something else unrelated and it works out a treat.

Another excellent video Thomas. The stand out theme in your videos since the very first, yes I have watched them all, is seeking the compositions that work even if that means only one image in a session. This is the complete opposite of what I have done in the past which is to take maybe 200 images and of course only a handful are of any merit and maybe one is worth printing if any. I think that is the big lesson. Patience, care and simply looking. Of course make sure you enjoy it because that is after all why most of us try and make images.

A great photo; I think this video shows why you are so good at what you're doing. You take your time; you don't get frustrated if a day goes by without a photo; and you're able to spot the needle in the haystack, i.e. the composition that is really worth photographing within a landscape that while beautiful doesn't lend itself well to making photos.

love your videos!!! have you ever thought about taking your old canon 350d with you as well, and seeing what kind of shot you can get with it with your current skill level? it would be good to prove that the camera isn't everything and that, for those of us who can't afford the best equipment, we can still get great shots

I think that if I were to compare an old beginner DSLR agains a new modern flagship, my preferred sensor to do that with would be one of the Nikon 16 MP DX sensors, or one of their medium-(made by Sony, not Toshiba) 24 MP DX sensors. Man, those things are / were impressive at ISO 100!!! In fact they still hold their own against the latest 24 MP full-frame sensors... (Again, at ISO 100 that is...)
I still consider a beginner DSLR to be a fantastic choice for ultra-lightweight travel and backpacking, in fact the GPS-enabled Nikon D5300 is pretty much perfect for that purpose. Pick one up used for $300 or so, and take it hiking!

Having followed you over the past few months, I appreciate in particular your commentary on weather and ambient light conditions and how these play into planning a photograph. Similarly, how you view your surroundings and how this relates to composition. You remind us that a camera can be used in such a way that it moves us beyond mere spectator, beyond mediating our experience of the world, to being a pragmatic tool that can help us look more closely at and think more carefully about the world we're immersed in. Well done.

  • @buckfast69
    @buckfast69 7 років тому +16

would you ever consider showing shots where you aren't happy with the composition, as with most things you can learn as much from when something goes wrong. I would like to see a video where you start with a bad picture and work your magic to change the angles or wait for the light to improve or switch up the filters etc and work the image till you get a composition you are happy with. I think it would help out use newbies if could see the thought process that goes into getting the composition.

All of that gorgeous green landscape is heavenly to me! I'm shocked that you only captured one photo. I think you're too fussy, or perhaps simply have different tastes in landscapes. If I'm ever lucky enough to go to a Finnish forest I'm sure that I'll capture around a thousand photos and have used up a whole battery. For me those simple obvious compositions were right behind you when you were at the burnt part of the forest (At 9 minutes). This is one of my favourite videos of yours because it's all filmed in enchantingly beautiful forested lands! 🌲🌲🌲😍🌲🌲🌲

That image was wonderful ! I love the fact that you give us all your thoughts, and that you don't bother taking pictures that aren't worth it. I think it's one of the biggest mistakes I make as a beginner, trying to take a lot of pictures instead of focusing on finding THE composition. Also, I would never have thought about taking a shot of that burnt area, even tho I already try to pay a lot of attention to my surroundings.
And your video skills are fantastic aswell, great story telling :)

Great video. I love your philosophy. I so often find myself really feeling the need to make a great picture out of every situation, causing myself to struggle against what the conditions are. It's better to accept and appreciate what is in front of you, and make the pictures when the compositions are there. If not, that's just fine too.

Wow, love this little vlog, the photo at the end was worth the trouble, and so glad you hid that small white twig that sprouted from that white Birch trunk! The image tells an important story too and on so many levels! I do wonder what a monochrome version would look like, maybe with a subtle mocha hue to it!
Next week ill be photographing the Somerset and Devon coast, and hopefully Brighton town for some variety, I don't really do many landscapes, but I think on a subliminal level I tend to go for very minimalist look, but given that I live in Norfolk which is a bit remote, the landscape here itself might be suited for that, but down the south west the landscape is a bit more daring. If i come away with just one cracking image on my x-e2 ill be satisfied, and i can go back to my day jobs knowing i done alright =)

I would have never thought about shooting this silver tree. Great idea! What a nice image came out of that - at first sight - boring forest.

Only one image, but the experience will last a lifetime.
